  • With the coronavirus dominating the news, ‘The Office’ star John Krasinski launched a new YouTube series with a focus on uplifting news.
  • The series is called ‘Some Good News’ and premiered over the weekend.
  • The first episode included a guest appearance from fellow ‘Office’ co-star Steve Carell.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

John Krasinski was trending late last night on Twitter, prompting many to mistakenly assume that The Office star had come down with the coronavirus. Thankfully, that’s not the reason Krasinski was trending at all. As it turns out, Krasinski is launching a new YouTube series called Some Good News which, as the name implies, will focus on sharing positive stories designed to counterbalance the deluge of sad coronavirus-related stories that currently dominate the headlines.

Krasinski’s new show comes in the wake of the actor taking to Twitter last week and asking folks online to send him uplifting stories that made them smile or feel particularly good. The new series made a splash right from the get-go with Krasinski getting his former Office co-star Steve Carell to join in on the fun.

Brazen art thieves stole a Van Gogh painting from a museum closed because of coronavirus

%name Brazen art thieves stole a Van Gogh painting from a museum closed because of coronavirus by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The coronavirus pandemic has caused countless businesses, landmarks, buildings, museums, and more public spaces around the world to be temporarily shuttered as officials work to get control of the deadly virus.
  • In the early morning hours on Monday, art thieves broke into a Dutch art museum — the Singer Lauren museum, near Amsterdam — that had been closed because of the virus and stole a Vincent Van Gogh painting.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

A brazen overnight art heist in The Netherlands involving a stolen Vincent Van Gogh masterpiece sounds so perfectly timed that it could have been pulled off by Danny Ocean and his fictional crew of thieves from the Ocean’s Eleven movie franchise.

The “smash-and-grab” raid, as officials have described it, occurred at the Singer Lauren museum near Amsterdam and involved the theft of Van Gogh’s The Parsonage Garden at Nuenen in Spring 1884. What made the thieves feel emboldened enough to pull off their heist? The museum was closed as a result of the spread of the novel coronavirus.

New coronavirus vaccine will begin human testing by September

%name New coronavirus vaccine will begin human testing by September by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The first coronavirus vaccine could begin human testing by September of this year.
  • Projections pegged late 2021 as the earliest we could realistically expect to see a vaccine, but Johnson & Johnson expects its coronavirus vaccine to be available in emergencies by early next year.
  • This is an accelerated timeline for the development of a vaccine, but the novel coronavirus pandemic has put us in a position where we cannot afford to wait years for an antidote.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Ever since the novel coronavirus outbreak in China morphed into a global pandemic, people have been asking when their lives are going to go back to normal. Sadly, not a single medical expert or epidemiologist can give us a definitive answer to that question, but until a vast majority of the population has either been infected and developed immunity to the virus or received a vaccine to prevent them from getting it in the first place, the disruption of our daily lives is going to continue. But the vaccine might be much closer than we initially expected.

In an alarming study released to the public earlier this month, the Imperial College COVID-19 response team asserted that a vaccine could be at least 18 months away, but on Monday, Johnson & Johnson announced that it had chosen a lead vaccine candidate that it expects to begin testing on humans by September.

  • The coronavirus has made it more challenging for Apple to work on new products.
  • Apple this year plans to release a new HomePod and more budget-friendly iPads.
  • Other products on track for a 2020 release include a new MacBook Pro, a new Apple Watch, and a new Apple TV.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Though the vast majority of Apple employees are now working from home due to stay-at-home directives in California, the company is still working diligently on new products. In short, Apple’s ability to innovate and work on new products may be somewhat stunted, but it hasn’t been completely stifled. According to a report from Bloomberg, some of Apple’s hardware engineers have received special permission to work at Apple’s spaceship campus in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

Specifically, Apple is said to be working on a slew of new devices, including next-gen versions of the HomePod and Apple TV. Other products Apple may release sometime this year include new iterations of the Apple Watch and iMac, along with a new MacBook Pro and budget-friendly iPads.

Tokyo Summer Olympics officially rescheduled for 2021

%name Tokyo Summer Olympics officially rescheduled for 2021 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The coronavirus pandemic forced the IOC (International Olympic Committee) to delay the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo.
  • The Tokyo Summer Games will now kick off in 2021 and will run from July 23th through August 8th.
  • Any athlete who already qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics will be automatically qualified for the 2021 Summer Olympics.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

When the NBA canceled its season nearly three weeks ago, a lot of people thought the decision was overkill. With the benefit of hindsight, and with the coronavirus still spreading across the United States, it’s now abundantly clear that the NBA was way ahead of the curve. Before long, the entire sports world was put on pause as March Madness was canceled, along with MLB spring training, European soccer, and everything in between.

The longest holdout, however, was the Olympics. Originally set to take place in Tokyo, Japan this summer, the IOC waited until last week to officially cancel the Summer Games. And now the IOC has issued a new schedule for what will now be referred to as the 2021 games. Specifically, the Summer Olympics next year will run from July 23rd through August 8th.

‘HQ Trivia’ rises from the grave less than two months after its demise

%name ‘HQ Trivia’ rises from the grave less than two months after its demise by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • HQ Trivia hosted its first live game in over a month on Sunday night.
  • HQ Trivia shut down in February following a series of internal struggles and a lack of viewership.
  • The first prize pool for the resurrected HQ Trivia was $1,000, and the company also donated $100,000 to a charity working to feed those in need during the coronavirus pandemic.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Considering that less than a month ago most Americans weren’t even aware that there was a possibility they would all be stuck in their homes waiting out a deadly pandemic, it is not going to be easy to surprise them. But the unexpected return of a beloved mobile quiz app certainly created some buzz on Sunday night as HQ Trivia returned with a brand new game for the first time since the app suddenly shut down in the middle of February.

HQ Trivia was a viral hit when it launched in 2017, giving everyone who downloaded the app a chance to compete for cash prizes by answering questions on a live quiz show. Much like Pokemon Go, the popularity of the concept peaked and began to fade, but parent company Intermedia Labs Inc. failed to adapt, and the internal issues that the company was facing started to come to light, punctuated by the departure of host Scott Rogowsky.

That tumultuous period ended with the demise of the app, but just over a month later, HQ Trivia is back.

Your health insurance premium may skyrocket because of coronavirus

%name Your health insurance premium may skyrocket because of coronavirus by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The number of coronavirus cases in the US continues to spike, with more than 143,000 people having been infected as of Monday morning, according to the latest numbers from Johns Hopkins University.
  • A new analysis projects that health insurance premiums are going to skyrocket next year as a result of the unexpected costs of the coronavirus this year.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

News coverage hasn’t focused as intently on the dollars and cents of the coronavirus pandemic as much as it, rightfully, has zeroed in on the human cost of the virus — in terms of lives lost, hospitalizations, and the race to find a cure as well as a treatment to help people get over the virus in the meantime.

The longer this stays with us, though, the more the economic toll of the COVID-19 coronavirus is going to come into stark relief. Setting aside the impact of the virus on the economy (which has been so catastrophic that a $2 trillion economic stimulus bill from Congress was needed), a new analysis from an entity called Covered California finds that health insurance premiums may see a big spike next year because of all the medical bills incurred this year as a result of the virus.

FDA approves new 5-minute coronavirus test

%name FDA approves new 5 minute coronavirus test by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The FDA approved a fast coronavirus test that can provide a positive result in 5 minutes and a negative one in 13 minutes.
  • The Abbott test can be performed using the company’s widely deployed ID NOW testing machines, which require little training to operate.
  • Abbott can ramp up mass-production to up to 50,000 tests per day.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The world is scrambling to mass-produce more tests able to detect the novel coronavirus more quickly than traditional tests. That’s because the SARS-CoV-2 virus is very contagious, having infected more than 740,000 people around the world in three months. Not only that, but the virus is inconsistent when it comes to symptoms. Some people won’t experience any symptoms for up to 14 days after being infected. What’s worse is that most of the COVID-19 symptoms mimic the flu. The loss of taste and smell is an unusual early COVID-19 sign that people should be on the lookout for, although not all patients might experience it. In most cases, you can’t detect the virus early by looking at symptoms alone. And without symptoms, you won’t qualify for any sort of testing in the US and other countries.

Tests are your best bet once you suspect you’ve been infected, and a quick positive diagnosis can dramatically improve your chances of recovery and dramatically decrease the chances that you’ll spread the potentially deadly disease. You’d be admitted to a hospital or quarantined during your recovery to reduce the risk of transmitting the disease to others. That’s where the new 5-minute coronavirus tests can come in handy, especially for specific categories of patients.

Roku Express HD is $29 at Amazon, and the $60 Roku Streaming Stick+ is only $39

%name Roku Express HD is $29 at Amazon, and the $60 Roku Streaming Stick+ is only $39 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Roku is the top streaming media player brand in the world right now, which means its devices are even more popular than Amazon’s Fire TV device lineup.
  • Amazon is running deals right now on two of the company’s most popular streaming players, the entry-level Roku Express HD and the beloved Roku Streaming Stick+.
  • Both devices are on sale right now at their lowest prices of the year, but there’s no telling how much longer the deals will be available.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

When it comes to streaming media players, people are either in the Fire TV camp or the Roku camp. There happen to be a lot more people in the Roku camp since it’s the top streaming media player brand out there right now, but either one will give you access to any and all the streaming services you subscribe to. Fire TV fans will be happy to learn that there’s a little-known deal right now on Amazon’s site that you can take advantage of to get a great price on either one of Amazon’s two best-selling models. Buy either two Fire TV Sticks or two Fire TV Stick 4K streamers and you’ll get a $20 Amazon credit when you activate them.

If you’re team Roku, don’t worry because we’ve got a pair of deals for you that might be even better. One is on Roku’s entry-level streaming device and the second is on the Roku Streaming Stick+, which might be the most beloved device Roku makes.

Starting with the entry-level model, the Roku Express HD was updated for 2019 and it’s one of the most affordable streaming media players out there. You get access to every streaming service you have ever heard of along with dozens and dozens of services you’ve probably never heard of. On top of that, you get The Roku Channel, which aggregates all sorts of great movies and TV shows that you can stream for free. It’s shipping out right away and it’s only $29 at Amazon.

Roku Express HD Streaming Media Player 2019: $29.00

There are three things you won’t get with the Express HD that might make it worth the upgrade. First, you won’t get a compact dongle form factor — it’s still compact, but it’s not a dongle. Second, you won’t get support for content that streams in 4K resolution. And third, you won’t get support for the vivid colors that come along with HDR content. For all that, you’ll need the Roku Streaming Stick+, which just so happens to be on sale today for $39 instead of $60. That price is even lower than it was on Black Friday, so it’s definitely a great deal. The only downside is that you won’t get this deal delivered for a few weeks, but if you ask us, it’s worth waiting for.
