  • NASA’s Mars 2020 rover, Perseverance, is coming together ahead of its expected launch to the Red Planet in July of this year.
  • The mission is still on schedule despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and though it’s still possible that that could change.
  • Among other tasks, the rover will gather material samples from the planet’s surface and ready them for transport back to Earth.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

NASA’s Mars 2020 mission is still a go, despite the growing public health crisis in the United States and abroad. The launch of the Perseverance rover has been planned for years now and is rapidly approaching the finish line, with NASA staff reinstalling some of the robot’s vital components and readying it for its long trip to the Red Planet.

As NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory explains in a new blog post, the tools the rover will use to snatch samples of the martian soil and ready them for eventual delivery back to Earth were recently integrated and tested, including the Adaptive Caching Assembly and the Bit Carousel.

Apple shares plummet as coronavirus concerns persist

%name Apple shares plummet as coronavirus concerns persist by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • As states with sizable populations like New York, California, and Illinois enact stay-at-home measures, the stock market dropped significantly before the close of trading on Friday.
  • Apple shares in particular fell by more than 6% and closed down below the $240 threshold for the first time in months.
  • With so much uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus and whether or not countries can stop it from spreading, there’s no telling when the stock market will make a full recovery.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Amidst a report that the iPhone 12 release is still on schedule, investors thought that Apple might make a strong end-of-the-week push before the markets closed on Friday. As it turns out, the opposite happened. While Apple was seemingly holding strong at $240 a share for quite some time, Apple’s share price dropped abruptly during the last 40 minutes of trading today, falling from $241 a share down to $229. That represents a 6.35% drop for the day and, as a point of interest, the last time Apple shares dropped down below $230 was in October of last year.

Apple, of course, wasn’t the only company to close out the week with a sizable loss. The entire Dow fell more than 900 points in trading today, marking the end of what has been the most significant fall off in the stock market in more than 10 years. Over the past 5 days alone, the Dow fell by about 17%.

  • Amazon, Apple, and other retailers are extending their return policies during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Amazon’s new return policies were first spotted in Italy, the country that has been hit the hardest by the outbreak.
  • Other retailers already announced extended return windows for various goods.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Shopping online during the coronavirus pandemic is just one of the ways technology can help during the crisis. Placing orders from your home will reduce the time you need to spend out of the house, and therefore reduce the risk of being infected with the new virus.

Amazon is a handy resource for purchasing essentials and anything else you might need, and plenty of other stores are taking orders online as well. In light of what’s going on, it looks like most businesses, Amazon included, are extending their return policy windows on account of the coronavirus.

Android 11 is finally getting a key feature iPhones have had for years

%name Android 11 is finally getting a key feature iPhones have had for years by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Android 11 may finally introduce an AirDrop-style feature. iPhone users have enjoyed AirDrop since iOS 7 but Google has been slow to release an equivalent feature for its large base of Android users.
  • AirDrop, in case you’re unfamiliar, lets users share extremely large files with other iOS and macOS devices in a ridiculously short amount of time.
  • Notably, Google isn’t the only company working hard on emulating the ease of use AirDrop provides. Samsung is working on its own solution as well.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

When Steve Jobs first introduced the iPhone, he said that Apple set out to create a “leapfrog product” that was a good five years ahead of the competition. And with the benefit of hindsight, the iPhone was just that.

For years, the iPhone easily outclassed Android rivals across the board. Eventually, though, Android handset manufacturers like Samsung — bolstered by Google’s continuous efforts to improve Android itself — started churning out devices that could stand toe-to-toe with the iPhone. These days, the difference between an iPhone and a top of the line Android is smaller than ever.

Will ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ skip theaters and go straight to streaming?

%name Will ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ skip theaters and go straight to streaming? by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Wonder Woman 1984 is currently scheduled to hit theaters on June 5th, but there’s no telling if theaters will actually be open again when the release date arrives.
  • A new report claims that some Warner Bros. executives have discussed selling the movie online and skipping theaters altogether, which producer Charles Roven does not want.
  • Warner Bros. denies this report, stating that Wonder Woman 1984 will release in theaters.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

It wasn’t long ago that a movie going straight to a streaming service and skipping a theatrical release altogether was seen as a sign that the distributor wasn’t confident if the movie would succeed. In our new reality – the one in which a viral pandemic is forcing us all to stay away from public venues such as movie theaters – going straight to streaming might be the new normal. In fact, even the biggest studios are now considering it.

TheWrap reports that Warner Pictures Group Chairman Toby Emmerich and his top advisers are currently discussing the idea of bypassing theaters and releasing Wonder Woman 1984 digitally instead. According to TheWrap’s sources, not even director Patty Jenkins and producer Charles Roven have been included in these talks yet.

  • A combination of two existing drugs is proving to be effective at eliminating the novel coronavirus in patients confirmed to have the infection.
  • Treatment with both hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malaria drug, and the antibiotic azithromycin dramatically shortened the recovery time for people with COVID-19.
  • More trials on a larger scale will be needed before we know just how effective this drug combo is.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

A specific combination of existing drugs has shown it is capable of wiping out the novel coronavirus in a small-scale study conducted in France. Doctors gave confirmed COVID-19 patients a drug cocktail that included the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine and the antibiotic azithromycin. The results of the trial were published in the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents.

A total of 30 COVID-19 patients participated in the trials. The participants were split into three groups. Ten of the patients received just the anti-malaria drug, while another group of ten receive both hydroxychloroquine in combination with the antibiotic. The third group of 10 were the control group and did not receive any treatment.

5G iPad Pro with mini LED display might be coming in late 2020

%name 5G iPad Pro with mini LED display might be coming in late 2020 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • iPad Pro with 5G, mini-LED backlighting, or both, rumored to be launching in late 2020.
  • Supply chain sources tell DigiTimes that mini-LED is going to get a big boost from Apple, as the company wants to use the technology on medium-size devices like the iPad Pro.
  • Meanwhile, Jon Prosser says a 5G iPad Pro with a new A14X chip is due out this fall.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Apple might have had to cancel its rumored spring media event due to the pandemic currently sweeping the planet, but that didn’t stop the company from unveiling a few new products this week. On Wednesday morning, Apple quietly dropped two press releases on its website — one revealing an all-new iPad Pro with a LiDAR Scanner, and the other announcing a MacBook Air with a cheaper price point and an upgraded keyboard.

As intriguing as the new iPad Pro is, it might also be a stopgap as Apple prepares to launch a revolutionary new tablet this fall. We have heard countless rumors about Apple’s plans for the iPad line, but the reports are beginning to paint a clearer picture of what the late 2020 iPad will have to offer, including 5G and mini-LED technology.

Google I/O 2020 completely canceled as California shuts down

%name Google I/O 2020 completely canceled as California shuts down by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Google I/O, the company’s annual developer conference, was scheduled to begin on May 12th.
  • On Friday, Google confirmed that the event has been canceled and will not be held “in any capacity.”
  • Google typically shows off new versions of the Android OS and occasionally new hardware at the annual event, but it will have to find a different venue this year.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Google announced on Friday that Google I/O 2020 has been fully canceled. The annual developer conference is the biggest event of the year for the company, similar to Apple’s WWDC (which has also been canceled), and is usually where Google shows off the latest version of the Android mobile operating system. Several hardware debuts have taken place at Google I/O as well, including the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL at last year’s event.

This announcement comes just weeks after Google said it would cancel the physical event at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, but would “explore other ways to evolve Google I/O to best connect with our developer community.” In the days since, Google’s decision was made for it.

MacBook Air review roundup: Everyone loves the new keyboard design

%name MacBook Air review roundup: Everyone loves the new keyboard design by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Apple this week released a new MacBook Air with some significant hardware upgrades.
  • The biggest change to the MacBook Air is that it does away with the butterfly keyboard that was arguably the biggest design fiasco in Apple’s history.
  • The early MacBook Air reviews are in and the consensus is that Apple has a hit on its hands.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

With Apple retail stores outside of China still closed for the foreseeable future, it’s not exactly an opportune time for Apple to release a slew of new products. Still, Apple has a product roadmap to adhere to and the company earlier this week released revamped iPad Pro models, an updated Mac Mini, and last but not least, and a brand new 13-inch MacBook Air priced aggressively at $999.

Apple was initially going to announce the aforementioned products, along with the iPhone 9, at a special event sometime this month. Of course, those plans fell by the wayside in the wake of the coronavirus and social distancing measures.
