  • Corporate America is increasingly stepping up to help consumers as the coronavirus crisis continues to pummel the country and keep many people stuck hunkering down at home.
  • Charter Communication’s Spectrum unit has announced that it will offer 60 days of free internet service for households that have at least one K-12 and/or college student at home.
  • Internet connectivity is more important now than ever, as it’s the main way most people are getting news updates about the virus — which has now infected more than 5,000 Americans — as well as how they’re performing their jobs and schoolwork as organizations increasingly shift to remote-work situations.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

internet connectivity has never been more important to most people than it is right now, given that hunkering down at home and quarantining to ride out the spread of the coronavirus means people are depending on their Internet connections for everything from news updates to being able to work from home.

It’s not just professionals and people with jobs who are increasingly shifting to a remote-work scenario in light of the coronavirus crisis, however. Schoolchildren, as well as high school and college students, are increasingly seeing their classes canceled outright or shifted to remote, online options. This is why Charter Communication’s Spectrum unit has decided to offer assistance to families specifically with those students in mind.

As part of a broader effort to alleviate the financial fallout from coronavirus-related quarantines and lockdowns, Facebook is giving every employee $1,000 in cash according to a new report from The Information.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg reportedly alerted Facebook employees to the new initiative via an internal memo sent out earlier today. As of now, there’s no indication as to when the funds will be distributed but it’s certainly an encouraging move from the social networking giant.

Galaxy Note 20 will have even faster storage than the Galaxy S20

%name Galaxy Note 20 will have even faster storage than the Galaxy S20 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Samsung has started manufacturing the industry’s first 512GB UFS 3.1 chip, a storage solution that targets high-end smartphones like the upcoming Galaxy Note 20.
  • The new storage chip will support write speeds three times faster than the Galaxy S20’s UFS 3.0 storage.
  • Samsung says that a 100GB transfer will take just 90 seconds, compared to more than four minutes for UFS 3.0 memory.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Most of this year’s flagships will support 5G connectivity, which will significantly improve data transfer speeds once 5G networks are in place. That sort of upgrade means that several other components need to be upgraded for users to actually take advantage of an overall faster device, and that includes the RAM and flash storage.

We’ve already seen handset makers employ LPDDR5 RAM in this year’s phones, which should make a huge difference going forward. Many of them will embrace faster flash storage, and Samsung just announced that it’s ready to mass-produce the kind of speedy storage that faster phones will require. This UFS 3.1 storage will likely power the Galaxy Note 20 later this year.

Is ibuprofen bad for coronavirus? Experts say the evidence is thin

%name Is ibuprofen bad for coronavirus? Experts say the evidence is thin by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • French health officials advised against the use of ibuprofen and other NSAIDs for coronavirus COVID-19 symptoms.
  • Other health officials are now questioning this logic, saying that supporting evidence is thin.
  • People with underlying health issues and the elderly who already avoid NSAIDs should continue to follow their doctor’s orders.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Days ago, health experts in France urged citizens to avoid using ibuprofen and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to treat symptoms of coronavirus infection. They urged citizens and anyone with COVID-19 to opt for paracetamol (acetaminophen) in drugs like Tylenol instead, saying that the inflammation-fighting properties of ibuprofen may ultimately make the infection more severe.

Now, others in the field are questioning the logic behind that advice, noting that there are no established studies to show that NSAIDs worsen COVID-19 symptoms. As CNN reports, experts are butting heads over whether the public should heed the guidance and avoid the drugs or if the recommendation is based on factors not related to coronavirus.

One of Google’s best inventions ever just went live on Android

%name One of Google’s best inventions ever just went live on Android by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Google Translate is getting an excellent new feature on Android devices.
  • Called Transcribe, the feature lets you translate and transcribe someone’s words in real-time, as they’re spoken.
  • The feature works with any combination of two languages from a total of eight, but requires a quiet background.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

One of the best services that Google ever released is one that you may be taking for granted. We’re likely years away from it being a flawless tool, but Google Translate can help you read any website, no matter the language. Translate has other features that work best on mobile phones, like the ability to recognize characters and translate foreign languages as you point your phone’s camera at them. Or the new conversation mode that lets you talk to someone else even if the two of you don’t speak the same language.

But Google just launched a mind-blowing new feature that will make it even easier to understand what’s happening around you in an environment where you don’t understand the language. Not to mention that the feature can be especially helpful in work-related instances where translation and speed are of utmost importance.

Uber Pool suspended in the US and Canada because of coronavirus

%name Uber Pool suspended in the US and Canada because of coronavirus by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Uber announced on Tuesday that it is suspending Pool rides in the US and Canada indefinitely.
  • The coronavirus pandemic has hit cities with the highest population density the hardest, and these are the cities where Uber Pool was previously available.
  • Uber is urging riders to follow a series of commonsense guidelines and only travel when necessary.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

While many of us are stuck inside for the foreseeable future, attempting to “flatten the curve” by avoiding contact with anyone who may potentially be infected, there are plenty of people who have no choice but to brave the outside world in order to do their jobs and keep their paychecks rolling in. Few are putting themselves at greater risk of catching the coronavirus than rideshare drivers, and although a full shutdown of Uber, Lyft, and other rideshare services might be coming, Uber at least took a step in the right direction this week.

On Tuesday morning, Uber Senior Vice President for Global Operations, Andrew Macdonald, said on Twitter that the Pool option is being suspended in the US and Canada. Macdonald says that 18 cities will be affected by the change, including San Francisco, New York, and Seattle, where outbreaks have been the worst.

iPhone 11 Pro Max vs. Galaxy S20 Ultra speed test results are shocking

%name iPhone 11 Pro Max vs. Galaxy S20 Ultra speed test results are shocking by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Samsung’s top of the line Galaxy S20 Ultra packs 16GB of RAM and goes head to head with Apple’s flagship iPhone 11 Pro Max in an old-fashioned speed test.
  • Apple’s top of the line iPhone typically trounces Android competitors, but the S20 Ultra delivers performance that can actually stand up to Apple’s industry-leading A13 Bionic processor.
  • The Galaxy S20 Ultra just barely bests Apple’s iPhone 11 Pro Max, but the tides will undoubtedly shift once Apple releases the iPhone 12 later this year.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Given that the modern-day smartphone market is nearly 13 years old at this point, It’s a bit funny that we’re still conducting speed tests with the top smartphones on the market. After all, whether you’re a hardened Android user or partial to the iPhone, the reality is that any flagship you buy today offers up performance that was simply unheard of even a few years ago. Suffice it to say, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where someone plunks down money for a new iPhone or Android device and subsequently complains about sluggish performance.

Still, there can only be one king and, perhaps out of sheer curiosity alone, the public often demands to know which smartphone stands out above all the rest. In light of that, the PhoneBuff YouTube channel recently decided to pit an iPhone 11 Pro Max armed with Apple’s A13 Bionic against a Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra armed with a Snapdragon 865 from Qualcomm. It’s an old-fashioned speed test and we’re here to see which flagship takes the crown this year.

All eyes have been on Sony and Microsoft over the past several months as the two companies gear up to launch new home consoles this holiday season, but as quiet as Sony has been in regards to the PlayStation 5, we’ve heard even less from Nintendo about its Switch lineup for the rest of 2020. In fact, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which is out this Friday, is the last game published by Nintendo with a set release date this year.

It’s been over six months since the last Nintendo Direct livestream (not counting the Directs focused on Pokemon and Animal Crossing in January and February), but Nintendo finally emerged from the shadows on Tuesday for an all-new Indie World Showcase, with 20 minutes of information about indie games coming soon to the Switch. Below, we’ve rounded up every Switch game and release date revealed during the stream.

  • Dozens of major retailers are indefinitely closing their stores to help stop the spread of the coronavirus.
  • Apple, Clavin Klein, Foot Locker, Nike, and Tommy Hilfiger are just a few of the stores affected.
  • Many theater chains are closing their doors as well, including AMC and Regal.

Now that we are officially in the midst of a worldwide pandemic, we have to start coming to terms with our new reality. For many of us, that means working from home, taking kids out of school, washing our hands and cleaning everything vigorously, and understanding that daily life will be disrupted for weeks and months to come.

Part of that disruption will directly affect countless workers all around the country and the world, as many businesses have no choice but to shut down their brick-and-mortar locations for the safety of the general populace. This will be a difficult storm for many of the stores to weather, especially if the federal government does not take drastic steps to assist, but it’s an important move to help ensure that the coronavirus spreads less rapidly.

You’ve probably heard about some of the closures via the news or on social media, but Business Insider put together a helpful list of every major US retailer that has closed its doors to help fight the coronavirus.
