Elon Musk thinks coronavirus isn’t even one of the ‘top 100 health risks’ to worry about

  • Elon Musk has now doubled-down on his tweet from a few days ago that declared “the coronavirus panic is dumb,” this time via a Friday memo to workers at his company SpaceX in which he declares that the virus doesn’t even seem to fall within “the top 100 health risks” we should be worried about in the United States right now.
  • It’s a position, of course, that is contradicted by most experts at the moment who are begging almost everyone to practice new habits such as social distancing and vigorous, constant washing of hands to try to arrest the spread of the virus, which led President Trump to declare a state of emergency in the US on Friday.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

“Don’t panic” is the phrase that figures prominently in one of Elon Musk’s favorite books, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. It’s a phrase the embodies hope and arguably represents pretty sound advice in any crisis — though Musk is being criticized yet again for offering an extreme version of that advice in response to the coronavirus outbreak that is slowly ripping apart the status quo of daily life in America. To wit: There’s not panicking, and then there’s an influential figure like Musk sending a memo, as he did to employees of SpaceX Friday morning in which he declares that not only is he not worried at all about the coronavirus — the evidence he’s seen has him convinced that this virus “is *not* within the top 100 health risks in the United States.”

Huawei’s P40 Pro might have one big advantage over the Galaxy S20

%name Huawei’s P40 Pro might have one big advantage over the Galaxy S20 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Huawei’s upcoming P40 series will be the first P-series version to ship without Google apps preinstalled, as Huawei is still banned from working with Google.
  • The P40 Pro, meanwhile, is expected to be Huawei’s best answer to the iPhone 11 and Samsung’s Galaxy S20 Ultra, which means the handset will carry a high price tag.
  • A new report from Greece now claims that the P40 models will be more affordable than the S20 phones, contrary to what a leak said a few days ago.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The coronavirus is wreaking havoc around the world, but that’s not even Huawei’s biggest problem. The company is about to launch a brand new Huawei P-series phone which will be more sophisticated than ever. It’s also the first P-series model to come with a huge flaw: the lack of preinstalled Google apps that buyers in Western markets have gotten used to. It’s one thing for Huawei to sell Android phones to Chinese customers who don’t expect Google apps on these devices, and quite another to convince hardcore Android users to switch to an operating system that comes without the Play Store, Google Maps, Gmail, Chrome, or Search.

The coronavirus outbreak and the US ban will be two huge issues that might hurt the P40 phones in Western countries. The only way to make these phones more appealing is to sell them at a more affordable price, and that’s why you’re going to like this P40 Pro rumor if you’re considering buying one.

One of the hottest movies on Netflix right now is 1995’s ‘Outbreak’

%name One of the hottest movies on Netflix right now is 1995’s ‘Outbreak’ by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • One of the top movies right now on Netflix is 1995’s Outbreak, a thriller starring Dustin Hoffman about a virologist who tries to stop the spread of a killer virus.
  • The movie is one of the top titles at the time of this writing per the rankings Netflix now publishes daily, which reveal what the top TV shows, movies, and overall content are on its service at any given moment in time. The lists are updated daily and offer deeper insight into how people are using the streamer.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Now that Netflix has started posting its own daily lists of the hottest TV shows, movies, and overall content on the service, it’s providing a fascinating window into the dominant streaming service on the planet — and, specifically, at how its millions of subscribers are using it to consume the content they love.

The lists change daily, and Netflix hasn’t given too much insight at this point into how they’re compiled. You can check them out yourself, if you haven’t already, by selecting either the TV or movie categories from the main Netflix page, and just start to scroll down. You should see a collection of outsized numbers next to movie titles, denoting the list — and, interestingly, there seems to be a coronavirus-themed influence on the numbers that are current as of the time of this writing on Friday afternoon.

Smartphone leaks come in all shapes and sizes, but it’s not often that an A-list celebrity is the source of the leak. As you may know, Robert Downey Jr. became a brand ambassador for OnePlus last year, appearing in commercials and posting photos of himself on social media with the OnePlus 7 in hand. It appears that the deal he made with OnePlus is ongoing, too, as a now-deleted Instagram post showed him with what seems to be a OnePlus 8 Pro.

Apple may announce a new MacBook Air as soon as next week

%name Apple may announce a new MacBook Air as soon as next week by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Apple may announce a new MacBook Air model much sooner than expected — during the week of March 15, if a new tipster’s information pans out.
  • This source was quoted by a prominent tech blog, MacRumors, which reports that the source has a track record of accuracy and that this announcement would be even sooner than we’d thought. Renowned Apple insider Ming-Chi Kuo has already reported that a new Air and MacBook Pro are coming in the second quarter.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Following up on a recent research note from the world’s top Apple insider that a new MacBook Air could be announced by the company at some point during the second quarter, a new rumor has emerged that Apple may, in fact, announce the new model even sooner than that — possibly even next week.

Despite the appearance that might be conveyed from the wall-to-wall news coverage about the coronavirus, US companies are trying to press forward with, if not business as usual, then at least a semblance of progress so that they all don’t come grinding to a halt and send the economy into a tailspin. Apple is one such company — and TF International Securities analyst, the always-reliable Ming-Chi Kuo, has reported that a new MacBook Air in addition to a new 13-inch MacBook Pro, will be coming during the second quarter.

AT&T suspends pointless data caps in response to coronavirus

  • AT&T announced that it will be suspending data caps and overage fees as COVID-19 spreads.
  • It has been proven time and again that ISP data caps are complete nonsense and could be eliminated in an instant without hurting the service providers that enforce them.
  • The US Senate has reached out to other ISPs to urge them to act in response to this crisis.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage to read more stories.

One of the many, many things that the coronavirus pandemic has proven is that the internet should be a public utility, not a luxury. If you yourself have not been told to work from home yet, you probably know someone who has, and no matter what your job is, you likely need access to the internet to do it. In light of this, Vice reports that AT&T will be suspending broadband data caps for all of its customers until further notice.

“Many of our AT&T Internet customers already have unlimited home internet access, and we are waiving internet data overage for the remaining customers,” a company spokesperson told Vice.

At $29 on sale, Roku Premiere is the cheapest streamer with 4K and HDR

%name At $29 on sale, Roku Premiere is the cheapest streamer with 4K and HDR by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • There’s no shortage of streaming media players available these days, but the Roku Premiere might be the single best one while it’s on sale on Amazon.
  • For just $40, you get a compact device with Roku’s beloved streaming media interface as well as support for both 4K resolution and HDR content.
  • $40 is already a terrific value that undercuts Amazon’s Fire TV Stick 4K, but the Roku Premiere is on sale right now at an all-time low of just $29.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Roku has been the number one brand in streaming media players for many years now, and we don’t see that changing anytime soon. You really can’t go wrong with Amazon’s various Fire TV devices either, but people just seem to gravitate toward Roku’s various streaming media players more often than they do to Fire TV devices.

Perhaps it’s the simple interface, which puts your apps front and center at all times. Amazon’s Fire TV UI is a bit cluttered and it’s clear that Amazon is always trying to sell you something, whether it’s a new Amazon original show or some app that a developer paid to feature. With a Roku device, on the other hand, you just turn it on, open the app you want to open, and start streaming.

Speaking of apps, Roku is home to literally every single streaming content service you could possibly want. From Netflix and Amazon Prime Video to Hulu, Vudu, Apple TV+, Disney+, pay TV channel apps, and everything else. There are also countless streaming services on there that you’ve probably never even heard of, plus the Roku Channel aggregates all sorts of great movies and shows that you can watch for free.

If you’re in the market for a streaming media player right now, there’s really only one that you should even bother considering. It’s the $40 Roku Premiere HD/4K/HDR Streaming Media Player, and it’s on sale right now on Amazon at an all-time low price of just $29. The only time Amazon’s rival Fire TV Stick 4K is that cheap is on Prime Day or Black Friday!

Roku Premiere | HD/4K/HDR Streaming Media Player, Simple Remote and Premium HDMI Cable: $29.00

If for whatever reason you insist on having a Roku with the dongle form factor, that’s pretty much the only reason you should pass on this deal — even though you can easily store the Roku Premiere behind most TVs. Luckily for you, there’s another deal on Amazon right now that drops the $60 Roku Streaming Stick+ to $49. It’s a dongle that supports 4K and HDR just like the Premiere, and this is the latest version that comes with a voice remote and TV controls.

President Donald Trump has announced a nationwide state of emergency due to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. Speaking from the White House, Trump held a press event this afternoon to make the announcement. The decision to declare a nationwide emergency comes in the wake of new coronavirus cases popping up across the country on a daily basis, despite a shortage of testing.

The US government has come under increasing scrutiny over its response to the pandemic. Tests used to confirm the infection in patients have been hard to come by, with many doctors sounding their displeasure at the lack of supplies.

Amazon’s popular Echo Show 5 is $30 off right now if you get a refurb

%name Amazon’s popular Echo Show 5 is $30 off right now if you get a refurb by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Amazon’s line of Echo products has exploded in popularity over the past few years, and the Echo Show 5 is one of the company’s best-selling new Echo products.
  • The Echo Dot and other Alexa smart speakers are great, but the Echo Show 5 adds a whole new dimension to the experience by adding a beautiful LCD display.
  • People love the Echo Show 5 so much that it became a best-seller when it was discounted during Black Friday and Cyber Week — and right now it’s back down to the same price if you buy a renewed model.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Amazon offers three different Echo Show devices and all three of them are fantastic. The original Echo Show has a huge display making it great for so many different things, but it’s also very pricey at $230. The mid-size Echo Show 8 is a bit more affordable at $130, and it has an 8-inch screen which is nice and big despite its compact form factor. Our favorite is the smallest model though, the Echo Show 5 that doesn’t take up much counter space at all.

The $90 Echo Show 5 Compact Smart Display with Alexa packs all the same great features as the other two models, including all the integrations with other Alexa-enabled devices. For example, if you have a Ring Video Doorbell, you can tell Alexa to show you who’s at the front door and the Echo Show 5 will oblige. That’s just one of millions of examples — the possibilities are endless.

While there’s no question that $90 is already a great price for this device, but you won’t pay anywhere near that much if you get one right now on Amazon. Certified Refurbished Echo Show 5 models are on sale right now for just $59.00, which matches Black Friday’s all-time low. Amazon’s certified refurbs are guaranteed to look and function like new or you can return it, so you have nothing at all to lose.

Here are the highlights from Amazon’s description:

Connect with your favorite people: Make hands-free video calls to the Alexa app or another Echo device with a screen. Instantly connect to other supported devices in your home, or make a voice announcement to every room with a supported Echo device.

More ways to control your privacy: Alexa and Echo devices are built with multiple layers of privacy. For example, your voice is streamed to the cloud only after your device detects the wake word (“Alexa”). You can also turn the microphone and camera off with a press of a button. And the built-in shutter lets you easily cover the camera.

Make your home smarter: Manage compatible smart home devices on the simple interactive display or use your voice. Control lights and switches. Set thermostats. View security cameras.

Alexa has skills: With more than 80,000 skills and counting, Alexa is always getting smarter. Skills are like apps and help you do more like play Jeopardy! or learn something new with wikiHow. Just say, “Alexa, show me skills.”

Alexa for kids: Make your Echo Show 5 kid-friendly at no extra charge by enabling Amazon FreeTime in the Alexa app. Automatically filter explicit content, set bedtime limits, and review activity. Allow independence with calling and video chat only with approved contacts. Children’s privacy is important to Amazon. Learn more about FreeTime on Alexa. With an Amazon FreeTime Unlimited subscription (starting at $2.99 per month), your kids can access over 1,000 Audible books, kid-friendly movies on Prime Video, premium kids skills from brands like Disney and Nickelodeon, ad-free radio stations and playlists, and more.
