The coronavirus outbreak has been spreading to additional countries aggressively, with Iran, Italy, and South Korea becoming the biggest COVID-19 hot zones aside from China. The virus is far from being contained and authorities expect more people to be infected in the weeks and months to come. As a result, a variety of big events have been canceled over the past few weeks, including prominent ones like the Mobile World Congress and the Geneva Auto Show. Even the Summer Olympics are at risk, depending on what happens with the outbreak in the near future. Before we get to that, we’ll likely see other events get canceled, and the latest one concerns Disney’s wildly popular video streaming service.

If you had a time machine that allowed you to cruise far into Earth’s incredible history, you’d probably want to avoid a window of time around 3.2 billion years ago. If you decided to make that trip, getting out of your time machine would plunge you directly into watery depths, no matter where on Earth you happened to be. That’s what a new study published in Nature Geoscience suggests, and the picture it paints of Earth is one of a vast ocean planet with no continents or landmasses at all.

Earth’s continents are the result of a natural feature of our planet called plate tectonics. Massive plates of the Earth’s crust sort of “float” along, moving very slowly but eventually colliding, pushing huge amounts of rocky material above sea level. That’s what continents are made of, but this new research suggests that 3.2 billion years ago they hadn’t yet formed.

If all the recent chatter we’ve seen online turns out to be true, today could finally be the day when Sony either sends out invitations to its PS5 event or even announces some preliminary details about the PlayStation 5. At this point, it’s completely unclear which route the company will take in light of the coronavirus outbreak that’s still wreaking havoc. Big conferences are being canceled left and right and Sony in particular has been quick to bail on events even before they’re canceled. With that in mind, it seems like the company may decide to skip the big PlayStation meeting it was undoubtedly planning. Instead, Sony could follow Microsoft’s lead and make its PS5 announcements in bits and pieces. Microsoft’s upcoming new Xbox Series X design was shown off first, for example, and then the company announced some specs and key Xbox Series X features just last week. Sony could easily skip its big press conference that was rumored to take place at some point in March and just start making PS5 announcements instead.

Whichever road Sony decides to take, it should certainly get its act together soon. The company has dominated the current-generation video game console wars, with PS4 sales having surpassed 110 million units and Xbox One sales believed to be stuck at around half that. Where the PS5 and Xbox Series X are concerned, however, Microsoft is definitely dominating the conversation right now. The PS5 had much more hype toward the end of 2019, but 2020 has been all about the Xbox Series X, which shouldn’t really come as much of a surprise since Sony hasn’t made any meaningful announcements about its next-gen gaming console. When it finally does, we fully expect Sony to finally show off the PlayStation 5’s unique new design. And if it packs a feature that’s anything like the PS5 mockup we’re about to show you, it could be a total game-changer — pun intended.

When it comes to new smartphone designs in 2020, Apple fans and Android smartphone users are going to have two very different experiences. Where Apple is concerned, we can expect the iPhone 12 to deliver the first big redesign of Apple’s smartphones since 2017. We’ve seen iterative changes here and there like a larger display on the iPhone XS Max and the new rear camera array on Apple’s iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro phones, but Apple’s new three-year design cycle means the iPhone has been largely unchanged for the past two generations. The upcoming iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro models will sport significant changes when you get up close and personal with one. As we saw recently when we took a closer look at Apple’s leaked iPhone 12 design, the new 2020 iPhones will feature flat metal edges instead of round ones like we’ve seen on all flagship iPhones since the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus back in 2014. Up close, Apple’s iPhone 12 is indeed expected to feature a big design overhaul. From afar, however, the iPhone 12 will look just like any other iPhone with a notch in the display.

Over on the Android side of the fence, there are two main design trends that will dominate the conversation in 2020. First, All the different companies out there that shamelessly stole Apple’s iPhone X design back in 2018 have a new target in their sights: Samsung. That’s right, the company that literally wrote the book on stealing smartphone designs is getting a taste of its own medicine because almost every noteworthy Android phone vendor will release a phone this year that looks just like the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S20. Then, the other big news in Android smartphone design this year is the foldable form factor. We’ve already seen two new foldable phones released in recent months, and there are likely more to come in 2020. That said, foldable smartphones are still wildly expensive niche products that require too many compromises where design and user experience are concerned.
