  • Google is updating the Google Photos app this week to bring new controls to sharing albums that will make it easier to add a person or a group of people to a shared album.
  • Google is changing the default option for shared albums so that users can share with people via their Google account.
  • Google says that sharing in the Google Photos app is up 50% since the coronavirus pandemic began.

Google Photos is one of the company’s most popular services, and with everyone stuck at home due to the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic, people are desperate for ways to connect with their friends and family members. On the Google blog, Google Photos sharing engineer lead Sanjukta Mathur revealed that sharing is up 50% in some regions since the pandemic began, and this week, Google is making it easier to share whole albums.

Late last year, Google added a direct sharing feature to the service which significantly decreased the number of steps required to share a single photo or video with a contact by adding them to a private conversation in the app. Google is now bringing a similar experience to shared albums, as the default option will now be to share with a specific person or group of people via their Google account, making it easier to add people to albums.

CDC: Coronavirus ‘does not spread easily’ from contaminated surfaces

%name CDC: Coronavirus ‘does not spread easily’ from contaminated surfaces by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tweaked its COVID-19 transmission information webpage to make it clear that the primary way the coronavirus spreads is from person-to-person.
  • The CDC says the virus does not spread easily from touching surfaces, objects, or animals.
  • The page does indicate that touching surfaces may still be risky if the person then touches their face (mouth, nose, eyes).
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The novel coronavirus is as dangerous as it is because it can spread with ease and go undetected for a long time. The incubation period is anywhere from two to 14 days, and not all carriers develop symptoms. But everyone who is infected is contagious and can spread the disease to others. Social distancing, wearing face masks, and practicing good hygiene are easy ways to reduce the risk of getting infected. We’ve also trained ourselves to disinfect surfaces to avoid the risk of coming in contact with virus-laden particles. Studies have shown that sneezing and coughing can easily spread the virus, and air conditioning can help those particles travel beyond 6 feet. Even talking and singing is enough to spread particles that can infect others or contaminate surfaces. And the virus can survive anywhere from hours to days on certain materials.

But the CDC has changed its COVID-19 guidelines in the past few days to make it clear that the virus spreads mainly through person-to-person contact and “does not spread easily” on contaminated surfaces.

New coronavirus outbreak in China raises concerns about mutations

%name New coronavirus outbreak in China raises concerns about mutations by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Novel coronavirus cases in northeast China are presenting themselves differently than the earliest cases in Wuhan, sparking concerns about mutations.
  • The new coronavirus cases are infected for a longer period of time, take longer to test negative, and are infected for longer before they start to show symptoms.
  • University of Hong Kong’s School of Public Health director says this isn’t enough to prove that the virus is mutating, and that there could be other explanations.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

If there has been a silver lining amidst all of the tragedy and chaos of the past few months, it is the fact that scientists and researchers were finding evidence that the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 was relatively stable, which was good news for the prospects of an effective vaccine. In March, molecular geneticist Peter Thielen told The Washington Post that there were only about 4 to 10 genetic differences between the strains in the US and those in Wuhan, which is “a relatively small number of mutations for having passed through a large number of people.”

That was the best news we could have hoped for, all things considered, but according to Bloomberg, Chinese doctors are seeing notable differences in the way that the virus is manifesting itself in a new cluster of cases in the northeast region of China when compared to the original outbreak in Wuhan last year.

Protein powders are so popular these days, and they’re great if you find a good one and use it properly. But protein powders definitely aren’t always convenient. On top of that, the best ones often taste so gross that people have trouble choking them down. That’s why so many people use protein bars to supplement their protein intake. On top of that, they’re perfect for a quick bite when you’re in a rush and they’re packed full of nutrition, unlike most quick and easy snacks people eat.

There are plenty of options out there for good protein bars these days. Some taste better than others, but they’ve come a long way in recent years, generally speaking. Finding one that tastes decent used to be a daunting task, but now you’ll find that most of the popular options out there taste okay. Now, if you want something that tastes absolutely delicious and still has all the protein you need without all the carbs, you want Quest Hero Bars.

When I tell you that Hero bars are delicious, I’m not exaggerating at all. They’re not just tasty when compared to other protein bars, they’re tasty, period. Your body doesn’t metabolize it like sugar though so it doesn’t have all the carbs and calories associated with sugar.

Head over to Amazon right now and you’ll find the two very best flavors, Quest Nutrition Blueberry Cobbler Hero Protein Bars and Quest Nutrition Chocolate Caramel Pecan Hero Protein Bars, both available with a special deal. Buy one buy at full price and you can save 25% on a second box! Each box contains 10 bars but trust us, they won’t last long when you realize how delicious they are. Also, you can buy one box of each flavor and still get the discount, and there are even some other types of protein bars that are eligible for the deal. The Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor Hero bars are in stock rigth now as well and available for $19.98 per box, but they’re not eligible for the 25% off deal.

Best-selling face masks and hand sanitizers are all back in stock today at Amazon

%name Best selling face masks and hand sanitizers are all back in stock today at Amazon by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The CDC has made it crystal clear on its website that EVERYONE should be wearing a mask right now anytime they have to leave their homes. That said, you don’t need NIOSH-approved N95 respirators to walk around your local supermarket, so don’t run over to Craigslist and cough up $30 per mask for scammers who are shamelessly price gouging while taking away from N95 inventory that should be made available to hospitals.

Instead, all you need is a decent multi-layer face mask like the best-selling Jointown 3-layer face masks that are back in stock at Amazon right now for just 70¢ each. As long as you practice strict social distancing as well as good hygiene, which is just as important, these masks will do a fantastic job of protecting you. That’s why they’re Amazon’s best-sellers and that’s why tens of thousands of our readers have bought them over the past couple of weeks.

Face Mask, Pack of 50: $34.99 ($0.70 / mask)

In addition to those masks, Amazon’s other best-sellers are also back in stock today. They’re 3-layer face masks by Basic Resources and they also cost $34.99 per 50-count box. They have a similar design and utilize similar materials to protect you, so they’re very effective when combined with social distancing and good hygiene.

Single Use Disposable Face Mask (Pack of 50), Blue: $34.99 ($0.70 / mask)

Everyone knows about social distancing these days, but what exactly constitutes good hygiene in the age of the novel coronavirus? Long story short, you need to wash your hands every time you touch any surface while in public. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a doctor’s office, a supermarket, or anywhere else.

Using soap and water isn’t exactly practical, of course, so you’re going to need hand sanitizer and it’s still impossible to find in supermarkets and drug stores. Lucky for you, Amazon’s two best-sellers are both back in stock. First, you can get a 2-pack of Zatural 62% ethyl alcohol hand sanitizer gel for $22.99 right now, which works out to $11.50 per 8-ounce bottle or $1.44 per ounce. In this day and age, that’s really not bad at all.

Hand Sanitizer Liquid Spray – Rinse Free Waterless Hand Cleaner – 62% Alcohol – 4 Thieves Essen…: $22.99 ($11.50 per 8 oz. bottle)

In addition to that best-selling sanitizer, you’ll also find Artnaturals alcohol-based hand sanitizer back in stock right now at Amazon for the first time in quite some time. You can pick up a 12-pack of 8-ounce bottles right now for $39.99, so it’s a much better deal. The only issue is that you’ll want to ensure you buy from the seller called Organic Nature Bin because people seem to be having problems with some other sellers.

Artnaturals Alcohol Based Hand Sanitizer Gel (2 Pack x 8 Fl Oz / 220ml) Infused with Alovera Ge…: $39.99 ($3.33 / 8 oz. bottle)

  • New reports say that Google’s upcoming flagship phone will not run on the same flagship processor as other premium Android handsets.

The Pixel 5 will mark the first year in Google’s history of making smartphones when the new phone doesn’t rock the best possible processor. We’ve told you time and again that the Pixel 5 won’t run on the best possible mobile processor for Android phones, as several reports suggested that Google is looking at a cheaper alternative from Qualcomm. Pixel rumors are more often right than wrong, even the early ones. And we have more reports that say the same thing. Pixel 5 will not be a flagship device that could match any of its Android rivals, and that will be a huge disappointment.

%name iPhone 12 might not ship with EarPods in the box, top insider says by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The iPhone 12 might be the first new iPhone series to ship without EarPods earphones in the box.
  • An analyst with an excellent track record says that Apple is looking to drive up demand for AirPods with the move.
  • Apple is expected to run some sort of AirPods promotion in the second half of the year that would further drive up demand, although no iPhone 12 or AirPods prices are offered in the report.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The novel coronavirus health crisis might delay the iPhone 12 launch, several reports have said. Travel bans prevented Apple engineers from traveling to China in the past few months, which could delay the manufacturing of the handset. A recent rumor detailing Apple’s AR glasses plans tells us that the iPhone 12 announcement event could take place in October rather than September, which would be a first for the iPhone. Apple supposedly plans to reveal Apple Glass at the end of the show but would like an in-person audience to do it. A new rumor now details another unexpected plan for the iPhone 12. Apple supposedly wants to ditch the EarPods, which would be another first for the iPhone.

This formula will ‘decode’ the habitability of exoplanets

%name This formula will ‘decode’ the habitability of exoplanets by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Scientists from Cornell University have developed a model to “decode” the habitability of distant exoplanets.
  • By taking into account the color of the planet as it appears from a distance and the light of the start it is orbiting, scientists can calculate the likelihood that the surface is comfortable for life.
  • New exoplanet-hunting telescopes will give researchers a better look at distant worlds, and with tools like this, we may get a better idea of which ones could host life.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

In the endless search for worlds beyond our solar system, astronomers have discovered planets of many types, sizes, and circumstances. From frozen rocky worlds to massive, steaming gas giants orbiting so close to their star it’s a wonder they even still exist, exoplanets can vary dramatically. For scientists searching for life outside of Earth, it makes the job incredibly difficult, but astronomers at Cornell University have built a model that they think can help.

It’s a climate “decoder” of sorts, that gleans information about a planet’s potential for habitability based on the light that can be detected coming off of it. Their work was published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, and it could exoplanet researchers focus their attention on worlds that have the best chance of supporting life.

Antibody found in SARS patients can also block the novel coronavirus

%name Antibody found in SARS patients can also block the novel coronavirus by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Researchers working on monoclonal antibody treatment for the novel coronavirus have identified an antibody in a SARS survivor that can also neutralize SARS-CoV-2 and prevent COVID-19.
  • The SARS antibody can be used in an antibody cocktail drug to prevent the new virus from attaching itself to cells and boost the immune response.
  • Vir Biotechnology and GlaxoSmithKline will study two versions of the antibody in clinical trials.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The race to find a cure for the novel coronavirus is on, and there are three separate efforts being pursued.

The simplest one is to use common drugs to treat symptoms and prevent complications. Such drugs include remdesivir, which was proven to reduce the COVID-19 recovery time, and blood thinners, which can prevent clotting-related complications, including strokes, heart attacks, and death. One other course of treatment concerns vaccines, which could be ready as early as September, to prevent the infection, though vaccines might not work, and there’s no guarantee they will actually roll out earlier than next year. The third option consists of brand new drugs that are being developed to stop the virus from replicating inside the body and improve the patient’s condition. These are antibody drugs that would work just like a plasma transfusion from a patient who survived COVID-19. They could also provide limited immunity, some researchers believe.

We’ve seen an increasing number of reports detailing the various monoclonal antibody drugs, with several such drugs already in development in China, Korea, and the US. The latest study details an unusual but exciting discovery: An antibody from a patient who survived SARS 17 years ago works against SARS-CoV-2.
