  • Following the $2 trillion stimulus package passed in March, democrats are pushing for an even bigger stimulus package to boost the economy.
  • A recent study found that most Americans used their $1,200 payout on essential items like rent, food, and utilities.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

With the coronavirus bringing the U.S. economy to a standstill, President Trump in March approved a sweeping $2 trillion stimulus package that included $1,200 payouts to eligible Americans. The IRS began issuing said payments via direct deposit last month and stopped accepting new requests on May 13. If you’re eligible for a payout but didn’t provide the IRS with your banking information, you’ll likely receive a check in the mail sometime before July.

Now that we’re about a month removed from the first round of direct deposits, it’s becoming clear that a new stimulus package will be necessary to help Americans pay for basic necessities. Unemployment remains at a historically high level and a new study found that the majority of Americans spent their $1,200 payout on things like rent, utilities, and food.

Aquarium fish are starting to miss humans

  • Fish at Australia’s popular Cairns Aquarium are feeling a bit down after lockdown prevented visitors from coming to see them.
  • We don’t usually think of fish as having emotions, but the scientists who work with them say that’s definitely not the case.
  • Even some wild fish at the Great Barrier Reef are missing the constant stream of tourists that come to see them.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Social distancing has forced all of us to live our lives a bit differently than we’re used to. It also means that gathering in places like zoos and aquariums is an absolute no-go, at least for the time being. You might be missing your loved ones and close friends more than ever right now, but it seems that captive fish are experiencing similar emotions.

As ABC News reports, marine biologists are beginning to notice symptoms of loneliness in the fish that typically see countless visitors every day. You might be wondering how you can tell the emotions of a fish, but the folks who see them day in and day out are spotting the changes.

More coronavirus stimulus checks are coming: Everything you need to know

%name More coronavirus stimulus checks are coming: Everything you need to know by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The US House of Representatives on Friday passed a new coronavirus stimulus package that’s full of benefits — including money set aside to fund the payment of new stimulus checks for Americans.
  • The proposal calls for another round of stimulus payments totaling $1,200 for individuals and up to $6,000 for households.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

As the workweek drew to a close, the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives passed a $3 trillion coronavirus emergency relief package that bears the distinction of being the biggest such emergency bill in US legislative history. It follows on the heels of the previous record-holder, a $2.2 trillion coronavirus stimulus package from back in March that provided funding for, among other things, direct payments which the IRS is still in the process of distributing to most Americans to help blunt at least a little of the economic pain stemming from the coronavirus pandemic.

This new bill passed by the House, which will now go to the Senate where leaders in that Republican-controlled chamber have already said they’re loath to keep throwing money at solving the coronavirus crisis — at least at the scale as envisioned in this new bill — which would seem to make the bill dead on arrival in the upper chamber. The bill is chock full of coronavirus-related items, such as $200 billion to give hazard pay to essential workers and $75 billion for COVID-19 testing. It will also be interesting to see how Republicans handle one particular wild card in this new legislative package — an appropriation of funding that would give most Americans a new round of coronavirus stimulus checks. The amounts would total $1,200 for individuals, and up to $6,000 for households.

Everything new coming to Disney+ in June 2020

%name Everything new coming to Disney+ in June 2020 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • New shows and movies streaming on Disney+ in June 2020 have been revealed.
  • Artemis Fowl is one of the highlights of June, bringing Eoin Colfer’s beloved book series about a young criminal mastermind to life (on digital and a bit earlier than expected).
  • Disney+ is also debuting a documentary series about the making of Frozen 2 in June.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

One of the side effects of the novel coronavirus pandemic is that some studios have opted to put their movies online rather than waiting for theaters to reopen. Disney has already made it clear its blockbusters will debut in theaters, no matter how long that takes, but some of the releases without such a high profile have been premiering on Disney+ instead, including Pixar’s Onward. In June, Artemis Fowl will join that group as well.

If you haven’t read the books, Artemis Fowl is a fantasy novel about a 12-year-old criminal mastermind who kidnaps a fairy and holds it for ransom. It didn’t quite generate same following as Harry Potter, but the series is genuinely great, and film studios have been trying to make a movie out of it for decades.

New study may change our understanding of the coronavirus’ origins

%name New study may change our understanding of the coronavirus’ origins by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The origin of the novel coronavirus pandemic is still unknown because the world lacks data about Patient Zero, the first patient who got the virus.
  • New research indicates that COVID-19 may have been spreading in France in mid-November when some patients already had atypical pneumonia that’s consistent with a positive COVID-19 diagnosis.
  • The data might back up other findings that say the virus may have jumped to humans as early as October.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The novel coronavirus wasn’t made in a lab, but that doesn’t mean China has been forthcoming with information about the origin of the virus. After all this time, it’s still unclear when the first COVID-19 patients appeared, as that information hasn’t been made public. But we’re getting more and more evidence that outbreaks in Europe and the US started even earlier than officials thought. The latest proof comes from France, a country that already obtained evidence that said a COVID-19 patient was admitted to a hospital in Paris in late December at a time when no one knew about the disease. That patient had not traveled to China or anywhere else. The doctors who tested his samples months after his hospital visit were unable to explain where he got the virus from. And now, new evidence says the virus may have been circulating in France as early as mid-November, more than a month before the first confirmed case in Paris.

Think you have coronavirus? This is how long you should quarantine

%name Think you have coronavirus? This is how long you should quarantine by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • To date, more than 1.4 million people in the US have become infected by the COVID-19 coronavirus.
  • As the pandemic drags on, that number is only going to grow — especially with states and cities around the country gradually starting to reopen.
  • As part of that reopening, it will become more important than ever for anyone who feels they might have coronavirus symptoms to isolate themselves appropriately.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Going forward, as parts of the US gradually start to reopen and states and cities slowly allow everything from restaurants to small stores to come back online, identification and isolation of coronavirus cases will become even more important. It’s the only way society will feel comfortable again about co-existing with the deadly coronavirus, for which we’re still months and months away from the announcement of a vaccine (and still some number of months away from therapeutics that can treat the virus). Not only that, but even at this stage of the pandemic, we’re still learning about signs of the virus and what symptoms to watch out for.

Opening up locales again means people are potentially putting themselves in a greater position of being exposed to the COVID-19 virus. But what does that “exposure” actually mean? “Exposure to COVID-19 means you were within six feet — for over 10 minutes, without protective equipment — of a person who had known COVID-19 disease or developed symptoms of it within the next two days,” Dr. David Cutler, a family medicine physician at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, Calif., told PopSugar. “The consequences of exposure are that you should quarantine and self-monitor.”

Vietnam has spent $200,000 trying to save a coronavirus patient

%name Vietnam has spent $200,000 trying to save a coronavirus patient by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Vietnam has spent more than $200,000 struggling to save the life of a British man who was infected with the novel coronavirus.
  • After more than 30 days on life support, the man’s only hope is a lung transplant.
  • Vietnam has reported just 312 COVID-19 cases and no deaths since its outbreak began in late January.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The novel coronavirus has infected more than 4.56 million people worldwide, as of Friday afternoon. More than 305,000 of them died of COVID-19 complications, and that number will only increase in the coming weeks. The real number of global COVID-19 cases is likely much larger, as many people weren’t diagnosed with a test, or did not show any symptoms. Asymptomatic carriers don’t qualify for testing in countries where the number of tests is still limited. The disease will continue to spread for some time to come, and we may never get rid of it altogether.

But not all countries had to deal with a high number of cases. Several countries stand out for the way they’ve handled their local COVID-19 epidemic, and one of them is Vietnam. The Asian country that borders China reported its first case back in January. Since then, Vietnam’s official caseload grew to 312, and the state reported no fatalities. What’s really interesting is that Vietnam has already spent $200,000 to keep one COVID-19 patient alive whose lungs are have been so dramatically affected by the virus that he will require a transplant.

Some idiots won’t wear coronavirus face masks because they’re not manly

%name Some idiots won’t wear coronavirus face masks because they’re not manly by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • A new study suggests men feel more embarrassed and uncool when wearing protective face coverings than women do.
  • Men reported feeling “shameful” when having to wear a face mask in public, and reported that they are less likely to wear them unless it is absolutely mandatory.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Whether or not you support the easing of stay-at-home restrictions across the United States as the coronavirus pandemic rages on, there’s something that I think we should all be in agreement on: Masks are good and we should wear them. You can even make them yourself. Unfortunately, we’re not all on the same page, and a new study suggests that men (c’mon, guys!) tend to be far more willing to leave their masks at home than women are.

The paper, which was based on responses to a survey of nearly 2,500 men and women, and based on the data it’s clear that a larger percentage of men both misunderstand the risks of COVID-19 and are also less willing to protect themselves and others.

Promising coronavirus studies show that there’s hope for long-lasting immunity

%name Promising coronavirus studies show that there’s hope for long lasting immunity by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Researchers studying the immune response of patients who have survived the novel coronavirus found evidence that can answer a few of our most pressing questions.
  • The researchers identified the role of T cells in the immune response, and the early findings suggest there’s reason to be hopeful for long-lasting COVID-19 immunity.
  • The studies indicate that some people’s immune systems may have been able to respond better to the new virus after previous interactions with the other four human coronaviruses that cause common colds.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The novel coronavirus is here to stay, WHO told us earlier this week, echoing Dr. Fauci’s remarks that there’s little chance of eradicating SARS-CoV-2. In other words, COVID-19 is expected to become endemic, a brand new infectious disease that we’ll have to learn how to live with. The virus is deadlier than the flu right now because there are no cures, although tremendous progress has been made in the past couple of months. Doctors have experimented with several therapies that have shown promising results in studies, and researchers are coming up with a novel class of drugs that aim to prevent COVID-19 complications.

All of these efforts will help us treat the disease more effectively than before, and, hopefully, reduce the risk of death. The ultimate goal is for the entire world to receive vaccinations, a process that could take years to complete, assuming the vaccines are even effective. Once a large percentage of the population has been immunized, either through direct exposure to COVID-19 or vaccines, we’ll reach the herd immunity you keep hearing about.

But how good is COVID-19 immunity? A couple of brand new studies deliver promising results, suggesting that we may get long-term immunity when all is said and done.
