For quite some time, the expectation has been that Apple would release its first 5G iPhone in 2020. By next fall, most smartphone vendors will have launched a 5G handset (in fact, most have already), and it’s hard to see Apple skipping out. The only question is whether or not Apple will follow Samsung’s lead and release a separate 5G model, or if all of the 2020 iPhone models will be compatible with 5G. I had a conversation a few weeks ago with Lauren Hissrich, the showrunner for Netflix’s new fantasy series The Witcher that’s shaping up to fill the Game of Thrones-sized hole in the hearts of pop culture fans and which is debuting on the streamer any day now. What we talked about is, of course, the subject for another post, but I mention her now because of her philosophy about TV and what she thinks makes for quality televised entertainment. There’s no big mystery to it, really, she was saying — at the end of a long day, after work, when she’s got some free time to kill when she wants to unwind, she wants TV that does at least one of two things, and preferably both of these: She wants to be indulged, and she wants to be entertained.

I had her words ringing in my ears tonight as I spent about 3 hours enjoying an early screening of the slate of shows debuting on Friday with the launch of Apple TV+. I focused on the two highest-profile series, For All Mankind and The Morning Show, and let me say right off the bat: I found both to be entertaining — and not only that, but while each is weighed down by the flaws that bedevil any series during its maiden season, I would argue that neither is deserving of the harshest criticism that’s been levied at it so far this week, with the lifting of review embargoes.

AT&T’s upcoming new streamer is finally official and for me personally, there are two main takeaways from last night’s big event. First, HBO Max is going to be jam-packed full of exclusive and licensed content when it launches in May 2020. Second, HBO Max is overpriced at $15 per month and among the major players, it’s definitely the most skippable. Sure, the service will host some of the most popular shows out there from third-party studios like Friends, The Big Bang Theory, The West Wing, and South Park. And sure, there will be plenty of original content as well as all the HBO shows we know and love. But Netflix is still king and Disney+ is still the hottest new service set to launch — at half the price, I might add. HBO Max indeed looks appealing, but Netflix’s ever-expanding catalog and the 629 titles set to be available on Disney+ at launch alone should be more than enough content for one lifetime.

Samsung’s Galaxy Fold hasn’t been the massive success the Korean giant has envisioned, but it’s finally out there. Samsung can easily claim it was the first major smartphone vendor to ship a foldable phone in 2019 and does deserve some credit for taking the risk and pushing forward with the launch of a futuristic device well ahead of time. Foldable phones and laptops are certainly going to become more prevalent in the coming years, but the technology isn’t quite there yet — not to mention the sky-high price.
