Scientists genetically modified a mouse to be 4 percent human

  • Scientists injected human stem cells into mouse embryos and let them develop.
  • One of the resulting embryos had 4% human cells after 17 days of additional maturity.
  • Human cells were found in tissue that would become the heart, brain, and even eyes.

Scientists mixing the genetic building blocks of two different animal species sounds like the beginning of a bad science fiction movie, but that’s precisely what a team of researchers just did by injecting human stem cells into mouse embryos. Just over two weeks later, the team had more mature mouse embryos that contained up to 4% human cells.

These cross-species hybrids, called chimeras, were long the stuff of fiction but have more recently become reality. Scientists in several countries have conducted experiments in which human cells were added to developing animal embryos, but none of them have managed to create an animal that was made up of as many human cells as these mice.

  • It’s not X-ray vision; it’s actually a camera filter that gives the phone this ability and only works through plastic and other materials.

If you’re buying a new Android flagship this year, the OnePlus 8 series needs to be on your shortlist. As with previous models, the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro offer tremendous value, and unlike in past years, OnePlus went the extra mile for the Pro, which is the company’s first handset to support wireless charging and water- and dust-resistance.

The Pro is also the version of the OnePlus 8 with the better camera module of the two. And it turns out the phone has a unique camera superpower that’s not available on any other device. The camera has a mode that lets you see through objects. But it’s not exactly the X-ray vision you might expect.

Coronavirus is flaring up again in the Chinese city where it began

%name Coronavirus is flaring up again in the Chinese city where it began by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The coronavirus pandemic numbers, which already looked downright frightening, only keep getting worse — with more than 4.4 million people globally having been infected at this point, according to the latest numbers from Johns Hopkins University.
  • Many states and cities around the US are trying to figure out how to gradually reopen their economies right now, but there’s also renewed fear at the moment of a fresh wave of the COVID-19 virus that seems to be revisiting the Chinese city of Wuhan, where this all began.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

We’ve been starved for good news throughout the coronavirus pandemic, which has seemed to deliver worrisome new signs every time a fresh bit of information emerges. And, unfortunately, that’s the case again now, with much of the world trying to figure out how to gradually reopen their economies — while the city in China where this all began, which had already tried the delicate reopening dance, looks to be suffering from a second wave of the COVID-19 virus. A virus the World Health Organization recently clarified might not even go away. Ever.

In the city of Wuhan, everyone is back on alert after half a dozen new instances of coronavirus infections were reportedly identified over the weekend. Those were the first positive cases there in more than a month, with the city slowly coming back to life in recent weeks after a drastic 76-day lockdown ended on April 8. And as a result of those new cases, Chinese officials are planning to subject all 11 million residents of Wuhan to a coronavirus test as part of aggressively chasing down new infections.

NASA might accidentally create the first man-made meteor shower

%name NASA might accidentally create the first man made meteor shower by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • NASA’s DART mission will test the feasibility of redirecting an asteroid, but the debris it creates could generate the first-ever manmade meteor shower.
  • The DART mission includes a spacecraft that will slam into one of the rocks that makes up the binary asteroid Didymos.
  • A new study suggests we might see some of the debris light up the night sky.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

NASA’s upcoming test of an asteroid redirection system may accidentally trigger the first-ever manmade meteor shower. That’s according to a study published in The Planetary Science Journal that assessed the potential outcomes of the space agency’s upcoming Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission.

The aim of the mission is to test the feasibility that a spacecraft could save Earth from an asteroid impact by slamming into it before it reaches our planet. The mission will send a fast-moving spacecraft to the binary asteroid Didymos, targeting the smaller of the two space rocks while scientists back on Earth observe the results of the impact.

Apple AR glasses and new iPad launch windows leaked by top insider

%name Apple AR glasses and new iPad launch windows leaked by top insider by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Apple’s Augmented Reality glasses will launch in 2022 at the earliest, according to a top Apple analyst.
  • Apple is also planning to release two brand new iPad models in the coming months.
  • A 10.8-inch iPad will arrive this year while a new iPad Mini will likely launch in early 2021.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

A new research note from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (via MacRumors) relays that Apple’s Augmented Reality glasses likely won’t launch until 2022 at the absolute earliest. We’ve heard a bunch of conflicting rumors about Apple’s AR glasses in recent months, but a 2022 launch window seems to be a common thread.

Last year, for example, The Information published a report claiming that Apple executives openly discussed the product in front of 1,000 Apple employees and that the device will likely hit the market in 2022. A recent Digitimes report, meanwhile, also claimed Apple is eying a 2022 release.

  • A new study from Spain attempted to determine the real scope of the novel coronavirus infection in the country.
  • Researchers tested people for coronavirus antibodies, a sign they may have been infected and survived COVID-19 already.
  • The data suggests that nearly 5% of Spain’s population may have been infected, and 90% of them went undiagnosed.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Throughout Europe and the US, countries and states are slowly opening up their economies following weeks of social distancing measures that cost millions of people their jobs. The threat hasn’t disappeared, however, and people still risk contracting COVID-19 even in regions where the curve has been flattened significantly. That’s because the world’s coronavirus problem is much bigger than we thought. A study from Spain, one of the hardest-hit countries in the world, reveals that far more people caught the disease than the official numbers show.

However, not enough of the population got infected for Spain to reach so-called herd immunity, which would reduce the risk of infections significantly. Moreover, the research shows the virus has been able to spread in communities with terrifying speed, and that it’s not done spreading yet. Finally, the study offers a better perspective of COVID-19’s real fatality rate and the risk associated with opening the economy to normal levels.

  • Along with social distancing, face masks are increasingly becoming a familiar sight in cities around the country and are regarded as helpful in limiting the spread of the coronavirus.
  • One enterprising artist has come up with a unique twist on face mask designs — adding a straw hole, so that even though you may be worried enough about catching the COVID-19 coronavirus to want to wear a face mask, it doesn’t have to get in the way of your drinking.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The rift in America over face masks keeps getting worse.

Retailers near where I live are increasingly posting signs that announce something along the lines of — if you want to shop here, you have to wear a mask to come inside. It’s believed that masks, as a complement to social distancing, can help limit the spread of the virus by blocking germs you might expel. Since, remember, people can be infected with the coronavirus and not know it, so seemingly healthy people have a role to play in limiting the spread. Meanwhile, everyone has been sending the American public mixed signals, shall we say, when it comes to the importance of masks. President Trump refuses to wear one. Regulations vary from city to city. People have gotten into fistfights at stores over masks – and, as if all that wasn’t enough, the CDC recently said it doesn’t have any data about whether or how much face masks work in providing protection from the coronavirus. Confused yet?
