Doctors Without Borders is an international medical humanitarian organization well-known for operating in war zones and in places where health care systems have collapsed in order to provide suffering populations with the care they need.
Because the coronavirus has gotten so bad in one part of the US, the organization recently dispatched a team here, to operate in the US for the first time.

Most of the time, when you read about doctors associated with the medical humanitarian group Doctors Without Borders, it involves their work in conflict zones around the world — places like Yemen and Syria, where the consequences of war have ravaged the population — and, in the group’s own words, in hotspots where they’re called upon to “provide basic medical services when national health systems have collapsed.”

So in yet another indicator of how acute the coronavirus crisis has gotten in the US, Doctors Without Borders has now sent a team here. This is the first time this has ever happened, giving us something in common with places like Afghanistan, Iran, and Venezuela, among other countries where Doctors Without Borders has a presence.

Researchers at the University of Tokyo have developed an electric bike that is so compact it can fit into a backpack.
The bike, called Poimo, has an inflatable body that would protect pedestrians as well as the rider in the case of an accident.
The current version of Poimo is just a prototype, and the team that developed it says the final product will be lighter and even more portable.

Significantly fewer people are worried about commuting these days, what with an ongoing global health crisis and all that, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for innovation in personal transportation. The Poimo electric bike, developed at the University of Tokyo is most definitely innovative, and it also happens to fit in a backpack.

The secret to the Poimo’s ultra-portability is that it’s inflatable. Yep, it’s an inflatable electric bike that you can actually ride. It looks a little bit silly, but that’s a small price to pay for being able to pull a vehicle out of your backpack.

After a tense stand-off, Tesla will be allowed to reopen its manufacturing plant in California next week.
The approval comes after Tesla sued Alameda County for refusing to let it resume operations at its Fremont factory.
In a viral tweet sent out this week, Musk initially volunteered to be arrested if authorities decided to enforce the state’s stay-at-home order.

Even by Tesla’s standards, the saga involving Elon Musk’s battle to reopen the company’s manufacturing plant in Fremont, California has been nothing short of bizarre. Tesla, if you recall, sued Alameda County over the weekend for not letting it resume business operations and reopen its Fremont factory.

The lawsuit, as you might expect, was accompanied by a tweet from Musk wherein the Tesla CEO blasted the Alameda Health Officer as “ignorant” and for acting “contrary to the Governor, the President, our Constitutional freedoms & just plain common sense!”

NASA’s first crewed launch from US soil in nearly a decade is rapidly approaching.
Two astronauts will be launched to the International Space Station aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule.
The launch will be the final demonstration of the Crew Dragon before it is certified for regular use by NASA.

One of NASA’s most important goals — the launch of astronauts from US soil for the first time since the Space Shuttle era — is very, very close to being reached. NASA teamed up with both SpaceX and Boeing for its Commercial Crew Program, tasking both companies with building spacecraft that could safely and swiftly deliver astronauts to the International Space Station. SpaceX is first to arrive at the finish line, but crossing it means a successful launch and journey to the orbiting laboratory.

Now, with just weeks left before the May 27th launch date, NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley have entered pre-flight quarantine to ensure they remain healthy for the trip and their stay aboard the ISS.

Google added a new feature called tab groups to Chrome Beta on Wednesday.
Tab groups allow users to group multiple tabs together in the Chrome browser and label them with names and colors so that they are easier to arrange and keep track of.
Tab groups will be available in a new version of desktop Chrome rolling out next week, but you can test the feature out for yourself right now by downloading Chrome Beta.

I don’t think I’ll ever forget the day that BGR executive editor Zach Epstein shared his screen with me and incidentally revealed the unthinkable number of tabs he had open in his browser. In this line of work, tab management is vital, but everyone operates differently. Personally, I start to get antsy if I have more than 5 or 6 tabs open, so I do whatever I can to consolidate them as quickly as possible while I’m working.

There’s no “correct” way to manage to your tabs (although even thinking about Zach’s way gives me anxiety), but on Wednesday, Google added a new feature to Chrome Beta that will make managing tabs easier than ever: tab groups. The feature allows Chrome users to right click on any of their open tabs and group them together with custom names and colors. Once you create a tab group, you can move it around like a standard tab.

Doctors from Cedars-Sinai treating severe COVID-19 cases used a therapy that’s usually reserved for muscular dystrophy patients.
The team gave patients cells grown from human heart tissues, helping them get off ventilators. Four of the six coronavirus patients who received the therapy were later discharged.
This is likely stem-cell therapy, considering previous work from the doctors, and echoes recent findings from a team at Mount Sinai, New York.

The novel coronavirus can’t be killed or stopped with the current drugs that we have, the WHO said earlier this week. Dr. Anthony Fauci said separately that it’s virtually impossible to eradicate the virus. But there are plenty of therapies that can be used to reduce the severity of COVID-19 and shorten the recovery period.

The WHO is studying four or five of the best drugs for the new illness, but there are plenty of new lines of therapy that are discovered on a regular basis. The latest one consists of a treatment that’s usually given to Duchenne muscular dystrophy patients.

After two-plus months of strict lockdown measures, select Apple employees will start returning to the company’s offices over the next few weeks. Originally brought to light via Bloomberg, the report notes that Apple’s return-to-work initiative will be conducted in phases.

The first group of employees set to return to work later this month will primarily consist of engineers responsible for hardware development. While work on software like iOS 14 has remained ongoing during the lockdown, a number of Apple’s hardware projects simply can’t be worked on in a home environment. Consequently, developmental milestones for a few of Apple’s more ambitious projects, such as the company’s rumored Augmented Reality glasses, have been pushed back a bit.

This might come as a surprise to everyone who’s been watching the official US infection and death totals from the coronavirus continue to climb in recent weeks, but by this weekend, most of the US will have at least partially reopened.
That’s incredibly worrisome to researchers like Dr. Chris Murray, who’s behind a coronavirus model that shows deaths from the virus skyrocketing in the coming days and weeks.

We’ve been living with the strange reality of a global pandemic, and the increasingly restrictive measures that have been introduced into our lives like business closures and stay-at-home orders, for around two months now, but this weekend the US will reach a milestone that’s just as strange, in its own way. By Sunday, most of the country will have “reopened,” to some degree, with states gradually easing the restrictions introduced in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak — some more than others.

In many red states like Georgia, for example, there’s been a push to reopen faster, such as by allowing restaurants to re-introduce dine-in, but at a reduced capacity. In Los Angeles County, meanwhile, the stay-at-home order will run through the summer while being gradually eased along the way. Step back for a moment, though, and consider the bigger picture now that the US is slowly but surely beginning the reopening process. What does this mean for the toll of the virus, which the latest numbers from Johns Hopkins University show has resulted in more than 1.3 million infections in the US and more than 82,000 deaths?

Hurricane season looks to be starting early for a 6th straight year as favorable conditions for storm formation are growing off the East Coast.
If the low-pressure area develops into a depression or tropical storm, it will be named Arthur, and mark the start of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season.

Hurricane season usually starts on June 1st in the Atlantic, but you’d never know that by looking at recent storm history. For the past five years, powerful tropical storms have shown their faces well in advance of the “official” start of the season, and as Washington Post reports, it appears as though the same may happen this year.

In a bulletin issued by the National Hurricane Center, a low-pressure disturbance near the Bahamas could produce conditions favorable for a tropical storm. If that comes to fruition, it would be named Arthur, and the Atlantic hurricane season will have officially kicked off roughly two weeks early.
