Google Maps was just in the news again, this time because people managed to confirm that the app will soon be getting the dark mode feature users have been eagerly awaiting. Just before that, the app made the rounds on tech blogs thanks to the arrival of another new feature that people had been clamoring for: incognito mode. What’s most interesting to me personally about stories surrounding Google Maps is how popular they are. There are plenty of things that cause traffic spikes on BGR and on other tech news sites, and stories about Google Maps are definitely among them. It’s obviously one of the most popular apps in the world, but it’s just surprising to me how eager people are to learn about new features coming to Google’s free mapping app. What’s not surprising to me, however, is that the app’s popularity sometimes drives tech news sites to go overboard when it comes to coverage.

I came across a perfect example this past weekend when I stumbled upon a story with the headline “This Apple Maps update might be what finally pulls people away from Google Maps.”

Sony made some waves earlier this week by announcing more details about the upcoming PS5 console. The gaming rig will indeed be called PlayStation 5, just as everyone and their grandmother suspected, and it’ll launch holiday season 2020. On top of that, Sony revealed the successor of the DualShock 4 controller, which will feature improved haptic feedback, and could deliver a feature that’s not available on any other gaming console. Sony also talked about the PS5 performance, and we learned (again) that leaked PS5 dev kit design was the real deal. But Sony apparently made some comments that might not please all PlayStation fans, and, specifically, the ones who expect full backward compatibility from the console, at least with the PS4.

I’ve argued for years that we wouldn’t care as much about iPhone or Android battery capacity if we had incredibly fast charging speeds. And fast charging has reached faster and faster speeds over on Android — it’s actually one of the features that I’d like the iPhone to copy next. This brings us to a brand new phone that costs around $420 and needs only half an hour to recharge its 4,000 mAh battery. That’s also a phone you might have a hard time finding in certain parts of the world, a phone that has slightly better specs than the Galaxy Note 10 and Pixel 4.

Joker, out in cinemas, is a divisive sensation you shouldn’t miss out on, especially if you’re into comic book films. But unlike other titles from the DC or Marvel universes, Joker also appeals to people who really don’t care about superheroes. Without spoiling any of it, the film offers a great look at one of fiction’s best-known villains. But it’s also a great story that doesn’t need a DCEU link, and that’s why the film doesn’t feature post-credits scenes.

And while Joker is a dark psychological thriller, not all Joker-related stories have to be as gloomy. Take, for example, the case of a real-life lighting technician from the movie who had to work with a full costume and wig for eight days and ended up being “right outside of frame in the final cut.” Mind you, very tiny spoilers might follow below, but they’re hard to detect out of context, so they shouldn’t ruin your own Joker viewing experience.

Netflix may have come to prominence as a company that sent out physical DVDs in the mail, but the company really took things to the next level when it turned its entire business model upside down and opted to focus on streaming video content instead. In hindsight, Netflix’s pivot towards streaming was incredibly prescient and helped kickstart a completely new era of media consumption.

Famously, Netflix’s streaming service was able to hit the ground running thanks to an endless amount of content licensed from third-parties. Notably, even the most popular content on Netflix today tends to come from outside the confines of Netflix, with Friends and The Office being two prime examples. All the while, the media giants that were licensing their older content to Netflix where wholly unaware that they were helping transform Netflix into a juggernaut capable of threatening their own business models.
