Examples have been multiplying in recent days and months of American companies seeming to kowtow to pressure from China to censor content related to things like the ongoing protests in Hong Kong.

Examples include a recent episode of South Park that skewered Hollywood seeming to go overboard in policing itself to pass muster with Chinese censors. That episode ended up getting, you guessed it, banned from the Internet in China. Meantime, Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey recently caught flack from the NBA after he tweeted his support of the Hong Kong protestors. And now a boycott movement is getting underway targetting Blizzard after it took some dramatic steps to punish a player who spoke out about Hong Kong.

Whether you’re a seasoned marathoner, amateur jogger, or simply run when the situation warrants it, a new study claims that you’d be doing yourself a favor if you bound your feet together before your next sprint. This seemingly counterintuitive tip comes from a paper published in the Journal of Experimental Biology, and it has some serious scientific weight behind it.

Running, the researchers explain, is a relatively inefficient practice for humans. It burns lots of calories, but only a small fraction of the calories burned are actually used to keep your legs moving, while the rest of your energy goes to fairly mundane things like supporting your body weight. However, by maximizing the efficiency of your swinging legs, the entire running motion can be optimized.

Sometime within the next five years or so, NASA plans on sending humans back to the Moon. Looking to the future, NASA is laying the groundwork for crewed trips to Mars as well, and all of this exciting space exploration has inevitably led many to question just how long before humans set up shop on another world.

Michel Mayor, a Nobel Price winning scientist in the field of physics, isn’t too keen on talk of humans leaving Earth for greener pastures. In fact, in a recent interview with AFP, Mayor says he doesn’t see any way that humans will ever colonize Earth-like exoplanets, and that we should be spending our considerable resources keeping Earth healthy rather than dreaming of leaving it.

I had a conversation last year with director Drew Pearce, whose credits include the Jodie Foster-led thriller Hotel Artemis, in which he lamented at one point the “seismic change” the film industry is going through. Nowadays, he mused, studios seem to basically make either $5 million movies or $200 million movies — artsy fare to win awards on the lower end of the budget spectrum, and spectacle-driven big-budget epics at the high end.

That dichotomy has produced a strange kind of debate in recent days. Specifically, a debate over the artistic validity of movies from Marvel Studios, the implication being that they don’t deserve to stand alongside artsier creations and with even legendary director Martin Scorsese slamming Marvel films as “not cinema.” Stars like Robert Downey Jr., in turn, have weighed in by pushing back against the notion that these film lack artistic and creative seriousness and don’t deserve to be regarded in the same company as more traditional movie fare.

Just hours after Sony announced the final name and release window for the PlayStation 5, LetsGoDigital unearthed a patent filing for what might be the next PlayStation VR headset. You may remember LetsGoDigital as the site that first publicized the PS5 dev kit patent, which, based on Wired’s recent report, is an accurate representation of the device that developers are receiving. As for this patent, it was just made public this week.

Images in the filing show a familiar-looking head-mounted display, but with a few key changes. For one, there are four cameras in all — two on the front of the HMD, one on the back, and one on the PlayStation Move controller. There will be LEDs installed on the headset to track movement as well, and a built-in microphone.

We’re still several years away from seeing NASA send humans back to the Moon, but when you’re planning for a mission as intense as that, preparation takes a long, long time. One of the many things NASA is currently working on is the finalization of its next-generation spacesuit which space travelers will wear during their lunar excursions.

In a new update, NASA talks at length about the work being done to ensure the Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (or xEMU for short) is up to the task of keeping astronauts safe as they’re exploring the surface of the Moon.

Over the past few years, whenever a friend would ask me for advice about buying a new MacBook, I’d tell them that it was probably worth waiting a bit. It wasn’t that Apple’s MacBook lineup wasn’t compelling, but rather that the butterfly keyboard design Apple first introduced on its 2016 MacBook Pro was prone to causing all sorts of typing nightmares.

Over the past few years, Apple implemented a few changes which did manage to improve the overall reliability of the butterfly keyboard design. Still, even the third iteration of the design caused problems for a number of users. And hardly a point of speculation, Apple itself conceded this point earlier this year via a rare apology.
