Oh joy, Samsung may soon turn your smartphone into a billboard for ads

%name Oh joy, Samsung may soon turn your smartphone into a billboard for ads by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

For the second year in a row last week, Samsung was the official sponsor of the Advertising Week industry confab in New York. That sponsorship meant that the 100,000 or so visitors from the marketing industry on hand got treated not only to prominent Samsung signage but to branding for Samsung Ads, the feature that pipes ads onto the company’s smart TVs.

That’s all indicative of how much importance Samsung places on serving up ads, something the South Korea-based electronics giant is apparently about to expand soon in a big way: It would do so by bringing the same Samsung Ads feature to its smartphones, essentially turning them into an expansive new platform for showing ads to users.

Even hardcore Android fans admit the iPhone 11 Pro camera is way better than any Android phone

%name Even hardcore Android fans admit the iPhone 11 Pro camera is way better than any Android phone by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Back in 2012 after Apple had been the clear winner in the smartphone market for some time, Samsung boldly stated that people would soon be just as obsessed with its smartphones as they were with iPhones. Then, the company delivered on that impossible promise. The company didn’t change its smartphones very much, because it knew that its smartphones weren’t the problem. The problem was the perception that iPhones were cool and Android phones were not, so Samsung dumped tens of billions — literally, tens of billions — into marketing and advertising campaigns that slammed the iPhone and positioned its own smartphones as the cool alternatives. All that marketing paid off, and Samsung would soon become the top smartphone vendor in the world.

It wasn’t quite a shift of the same magnitude and it didn’t cost tens of billions of dollars to pull off, but something similar happened a few years ago. Apple’s iPhones had long been the best camera phones on the planet by a wide margin, and a couple of Android phone makers decided enough was enough. They upped their R&D spending, got their hands on better mobile camera sensors, and developed software that dramatically enhanced the quality of photos and videos captured on their smartphones. The end result was a seachange that saw Huawei, Google, and even Samsung release smartphones with camera quality that far surpassed the cameras on Apple’s rival iPhones. Until now.

One of Pixel 4’s signature features looks like a gimmick you probably won’t use

%name One of Pixel 4’s signature features looks like a gimmick you probably won’t use by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The Pixel 4 will have a few distinctive signature features that make it sound like a better proposition, at least on paper, than other Android devices, and Google already confirmed them a few months ago. First, Google teased the dual-lens camera on the back, which makes the Pixel 4 the first Google phone with two rear-facing cameras. Then the company announced its own 3D face recognition system as well as the radar-based Motion Sense functionality. The later uses a Soli chip and sensors to pick up hand gestures and allow users to interact with the phone without touching it. That sounds great in theory, and might one day make possible gestures-only user interfaces like the ones seen in Minority Report. But a series of leaks suggest that, in practice, the Pixel 4’s gestures recognition system is pretty boring, and you might end up not using it in the first place.

Surface Duo already looks like a huge missed opportunity

%name Surface Duo already looks like a huge missed opportunity by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Microsoft on Wednesday finally unveiled its first dual-screen Surface device. But instead of a single gadget supposed to run a special version of Windows 10 able to run Android apps on top, Microsoft surprised the world with two different gadgets, including the Surface Neo and the Surface Duo. The Neo is a dual-screen tablet/laptop gadget that does indeed need a different operating system, one that Microsoft calls Windows 10 X. The Duo, meanwhile, is a smaller, pocketable Surface, that runs Android complete with Google apps. And that’s probably why the Duo feels like a huge missed opportunity.

Google Shopping just got a makeover, but it still doesn’t have a prayer against Amazon

%name Google Shopping just got a makeover, but it still doesn’t have a prayer against Amazon by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Google was talking up coming improvements to its online shopping service back in May at Google Marketing Live, promising that the absorption of the Google Express brand within Google Shopping would preface other changes meant to give shoppers more convenience and an all-around better shopping experience.

That’s all another way of saying the search giant has long wanted to grab a bigger piece of the market currently dominated by Amazon. By way of continuing down that path, Google today is announcing yet more news in this regard: A revamped design for Google Shopping that’s now available in the US for both mobile and desktop users.

India’s space agency refuses to give up on crashed Moon lander

%name India’s space agency refuses to give up on crashed Moon lander by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Early last month was supposed to be a time of celebration for India’s space agency ISRO. The group was poised to become the fourth nation on Earth to successfully perform a soft landing on the Moon. Things didn’t go as planned, and the Vikram lander crashed into the surface. Now, a month later, ISRO is apparently still attempting to salvage the mission, even as all hope appears well and truly lost.

In a new report out of India, ISRO claims there’s still a chance the lander could wake itself back up after the lunar night. With that in mind, the Vikram team is still attempting to establish a communication link with its doomed spacecraft.
