Mate 30 Pro loses access to Google apps after researcher exposes installation backdoor

Huawei didn’t mince words during the Mate 30 Pro event a few days ago when it came to talking about the Android OS the new phones will run. The company explained it can use any of Google’s apps because of the ban. Huawei further announced that its own Google Play store alternative will operate on these devices, and revealed it’s ready to invest some $1 billion to make that ecosystem a viable alternative to Google’s. That sounds great in theory, but in practice, any Mate 30 Pro buyer from the US (if you can get it) and Europe wants Google apps preinstalled, particularly the Play store, Google Maps, and YouTube. Soon after the Mate 30 event, it was discovered that you only need 10 minutes to install all the Google Android apps you love, and turn the Mate 30 Pro into the flagship it should have been without the ban. But that avenue is no longer available to buyers, as a security researcher figured out how the whole thing works, concluding that the workaround might also be a security issue.

Failing might actually be good for you

Career setbacks can be a real bummer no matter what your profession. For scientists, proposals that fail to gain funding and research efforts that hit dead ends can force them to shelve years of hard work. It’s these failures, and the future careers of scientists that endure them, that is at the heart of a new research paper published in Nature Communications.

For the study, researchers looked at the records of scientists who had applied for research grants from the National Institute of Health over a 15-year period from 1990 through 2005. What they found was that, contrary to what we might think, huge setbacks early in one’s career doesn’t necessarily hinder long-term aspirations, and in some cases, it appears to actually increase the chances of future success.

NASA’s InSight lander is hearing all kinds of weird stuff on Mars

%name NASA’s InSight lander is hearing all kinds of weird stuff on Mars by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

NASA’s InSight lander has experienced its fair share of hardship since landing on the Red Planet late in 2018. In the months since it touched down on Mars, it’s gotten more attention for getting its drilling instrument stuck in the surface than it has for actually conducting science.

Despite its setbacks, the high-tech lander has been working hard and listening closely for rumblings within the planet. As NASA explains in an update, InSight’s mission of detecting quakes is going rather well, with over 100 quake candidates and nearly two dozen events that the science team firmly believes are indeed marsquakes.

Microsoft’s most daring Surface ever might be unveiled this week

%name Microsoft’s most daring Surface ever might be unveiled this week by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Microsoft has been developing a Windows device featuring two displays for quite some time, with reports saying earlier this summer that the gadget, code-named Centaurus, was shown to Microsoft employees during an all-hands internal meeting. We then learned the dual-screen device might launch in the second half of 2020, complete with support for Android apps as well as iCloud support.

More recently, we saw a brand new technology that Microsoft is testing for foldable and dual-screen devices — a liquid hinge tech that could be sold to other companies for their own foldable creations. All of that brings us to Microsoft’s Surface event on Wednesday, where Microsoft might unveil the Centaurus.

PlayStation Now finally gets a price drop, might actually be worth buying

%name PlayStation Now finally gets a price drop, might actually be worth buying by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When PlayStation Now launched nearly half a decade ago, it was a novel idea. A game subscription service that let you stream games from the cloud sounded impressive on paper, but with no PS4 titles and an outrageous $20/month subscription fee, the value of PlayStation Now was questionable at best. Over the years, Sony sweetened the pot by adding PS4 titles, bringing the service to PC, and introducing a $100/year deal, but between Microsoft undercutting Sony with its $60/year Xbox Game Pass and Google introducing Stadia, it simply wasn’t enough.

NASA needs your help to make its Moon mission a reality

%name NASA needs your help to make its Moon mission a reality by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

NASA’s upcoming Artemis missions to the Moon are taking shape, and with a very short deadline of 2024 for a crewed trip to the lunar surface, it’s an all-hands-on-deck situation at the space agency. That sense of urgency extends to its contractors as well, and since NASA is relying on commercial partners to invent the new landing systems for the missions, it wants to get those deals inked as soon as possible.

To that end, NASA is announcing a final call for submissions for lunar lander designs. The window to submit plans for a human landing system is closing fast, and NASA hopes to have all the candidates in hand by November 1st.
