October is now less than a week away, which means tons of hotly anticipated shows are getting ready to premiere. We’ve got plenty of popular shows to look forward to that are returning for new seasons, and we also have a bunch of new series set to premiere that are prime candidates to become our next obsessions. Heck, there might even be an upcoming show or two that can help fill the gaping void left by Game of Thrones, now that it has ended in such spectacularly awful fashion. Two of the top candidates are HBO’s His Dark Materials and Netflix’s The Watcher, which are both epic shows that are based on popular fantasy novels. Unfortunately, those exciting new series aren’t set to debut until a bit later in the year. There are some other candidates coming sooner though, and you’ll definitely want to mark your calendars ahead of what’s shaping up to be a very busy month in October.

A brand new trailer for ‘El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie’ just dropped

%name A brand new trailer for ‘El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie’ just dropped by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When season five of Breaking Bad was winding down, series creator Vince Gilligan said that he was looking forward to exploring other projects outside of the Breaking Bad universe. As he explained it, he put so much time and energy into the show that he was ready to tackle an entirely new challenge and work on something completely different. As it turns out, Gilligan was seemingly more tied to the show than perhaps he himself cared to admit.

Rather than exploring new projects, the end of Breaking Bad saw Gilligan strike a deal to produce Better Call Saul, a prequel chronicling Jimmy McGill’s transformation into Saul Goodman, the lovable, quick-witted, and of course, shady lawyer who figured prominently in Breaking Bad. While the show has received positive reviews, it wasn’t exactly the action-packed drama Breaking Bad fans were accustomed to. Not to worry, Gilligan is back yet again, this time with a Breaking Bad movie which aims to highlight what exactly happened to Jesse Pinkman after his harrowing escape in the show’s series finale.

NASA spots distant star being torn apart by a hungry black hole

Black holes are devastatingly powerful forces of nature, and nothing demonstrates their incredible might quite like seeing one tear apart a star. Recently, NASA’s sky-scanning TESS satellite caught a glimpse of that exact scenario playing out at the heart of a galaxy 375 million light-years away.

In a new paper published in The Astrophysical Journal, scientists explain how they first detected the destructive event using a network of telescopes called the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae, or ASAS-SN. After its detection, the event was labeled ASASSN-19bt and NASA’s TESS was used to get an even better view of the fireworks.

The start of a new month means an influx of content on Netflix, and October is no exception. September ended a bit more quietly than usual for the streaming service, but with new seasons of Big Mouth and Peaky Blinders, as well as the debut of the sci-fi superhero series Raising Dion, this should be a great week.

Beyond all the original content, there are also dozens of licensed movies and shows coming to the service this week, such as Bad Boys (and its sequel), Ocean’s Twelve and Thirteen, Superman Returns, The Pursuit of Happyness, and, last but certainly not least, Good Burger, which is a masterpiece and will be the first thing I watch.

Popping a champagne cork generates a tiny supersonic shockwave

%name Popping a champagne cork generates a tiny supersonic shockwave by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When you pop the cork on a champagne bottle, the physics of the cork’s departure probably isn’t the first thing on your mind — it’s drinkin’ time, after all! But scientists tend to find interesting things in the most unlikely of places, and a new study published in Science Advances reveals that the loud pop that you hear when cracking open a new bottle of champagne is accompanied by the birth of a tiny shockwave.

Using high-speed cameras to capture the tiniest details of the cork popping in slow motion, the researchers easily spotted the phenomenon. The shockwave, also called a Mach disk, appears in the plume streaming out of the top of the bottle in the instant the cork is shot out at high speed.

Google Images just made it more difficult to find the photo you’re looking for

%name Google Images just made it more difficult to find the photo you’re looking for by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The origin story of Google Images is a bit unusual and, believe it or not, can be traced all the way back to the iconic green dress Jennifer Lopez wore at the February 2000 Grammy Awards. In the hours and days following the event, the number of searches for Lopez’ dress absolutely skyrocketed, with former Google CEO Eric Schmidt a few years ago noting: “At the time, it was the most popular search query we had ever seen.”

The problem, though, was that Google’s search results at the time were nothing more than a collection of links. In turn, Schmidt and Google’s search time quickly realized that they had “no surefire way of getting users exactly what they wanted.” And so, Google Images was born.

Downton Abbey beat Ad Astra and Rambo: Last Stand last week in ticket sales, and this week we’ve got a couple of new contenders that might go after the top spot, including an animated feature (Abominable) and a film based on Judy Garland’s life (Judy). If none of those caught your eye, but you’re still looking to catch up with new releases, Ad Astra could be one to consider — or at least keep in mind for when it hits streaming services.

Brad Pitt absolutely deserves an Oscar nod for best actor for his performance in this one, and the cinematography in space is amazing. Writer/director James Gray should also be rewarded for this thought-provoking, beautifully made movie. Speaking of streaming, the super silly Between Two Ferns: The Movie awaits on Netflix, if you’re staying in.
