Antibodies from this animal can kill the coronavirus

  • Antibodies obtained from llamas may be adapted for human use in COVID-19 cases on humans.
  • Researchers say the antibodies can neutralize the novel coronavirus’s ability to bind to cells, a critical process that allows the virus to enter the cells and replicate.
  • The antibodies might be used to manufacture drugs that would work just like plasma transfusions from COVID-19 survivors.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Llamas, the beautiful beasts that even Disney used for one of its animated features, might hold one of the answers to cracking the novel coronavirus pandemic. They can generate a strong antibody that can kill the new virus and scientists think they can adapt it for a treatment that would provide the same kind of results as a plasma transfusion from COVID-19 survivors.

Just in the past few days, we talked about eight separate projects to create monoclonal antibody drugs. Five teams are working on such therapies in the US and one of the drugs might be ready this summer. We also told you about similar efforts in Israel, Japan, and the Netherlands, where doctors have also been studying the same concept. Since then, a new study came out from researchers from the University of Texas, the National Institutes of Health, and Ghent University in Belgium that says llama antibodies can neutralize the spike protein on the SARS-CoV-2 virus that attaches to human cells and allows the coronavirus to replicate inside the body.

ESA wants to make Moon bases out of astronaut pee

%name ESA wants to make Moon bases out of astronaut pee by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The European Space Agency says urine could play a major role in the construction of lunar bases.
  • The urea in urine makes it an ideal ingredient to combine with lunar soil, creating a sort of ‘lunar concrete’ that hardens into rigid shapes.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Not long ago, researchers published a study revealing that a combination of pee and lunar soil may provide suitable building material for space travelers. The study suggested that the urea in astronaut urine could play a crucial role in mixing a concrete-like material for construction purposes. Now, the European Space Agency is doubling down on the idea, noting that astronaut pee will likely play a big role in space exploration.

With NASA, China, and the ESA all eyeing Moon missions in the coming years, the idea of setting up semi-permanent lunar bases is getting some serious attention. Many possible options have been proposed, including using hollow lunar lava tubes as makeshift homes.

Apple Stores in four states will reopen next week

%name Apple Stores in four states will reopen next week by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The coronavirus forced Apple to close all of its retail stores in the U.S. on March 15.
  • With the coronavirus subsiding in some areas, Apple today announced it will start reopening some store locations next week.
  • Apple is currently planning to open retail stores in Idaho, South Carolina, Alabama, and Alaska. Apple is evaluating store reopenings on a case-by-case basis, and it’s likely many store locations in densely populated areas will remain closed for quite some time.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

As alluded to in the company’s earnings conference call a few days back, Apple will start reopening some of its retail stores in the United States next week. Recall that Apple closed all of its retail store locations outside of China on March 15 on account of the coronavirus pandemic. Early on, Apple was aiming to reopen its stores after just two weeks, but the severity of the coronavirus effectively forced the company to keep retail stores closed for weeks on end.

“We’re excited to begin reopening stores in the US next week, starting with some stores in Idaho, South Carolina, Alabama and Alaska,” an Apple spokesperson told CNBC earlier today. “Our team is constantly monitoring local health data and government guidance, and as soon as we can safely open our stores, we will.”

US study says hydroxychloroquine doesn’t help coronavirus patients

%name US study says hydroxychloroquine doesn’t help coronavirus patients by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • A new study funded by the National Institutes of Health found that the controversial hydroxychloroquine drug didn’t help coronavirus patients.
  • The study included nearly 1,400 patients and concluded the anti-malaria drug wasn’t effective against the virus.
  • This was an observational study, meaning the researchers did not control the actual therapy of patients, and they didn’t compare hydroxychloroquine to a placebo.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Touted as one of the most promising drugs in the fight against COVID-19, hydroxychloroquine is receiving increased resistance based on data that indicates the anti-malaria drug isn’t helpful against the novel coronavirus. Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine received plenty of coverage in March for a variety of reasons. Anecdotal evidence showed that some COVID-19 patients recovered after being given the drug. But one person died ingesting a substance that sounded like the drug, and others poisoned themselves with similar-sounding products.

Studies that followed indicated the drug can have severe adverse effects on the heart that can be fatal, prompting researchers in Brazil and France to stop their studies. Results from the biggest hydroxychloroquine study yet come from US-funded research, and they indicate the medicine isn’t helpful in COVID-19 therapy.

Apple reportedly delaying new AirPods to 2021 due to coronavirus

%name Apple reportedly delaying new AirPods to 2021 due to coronavirus by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Rumors surrounding new AirPods from Apple have been floating around for months, but a new report claims they will be delayed to 2021 due to the coronavirus.
  • Meanwhile, a leaker says that Apple has new AirPods “ready to ship” at any time.
  • Apple will produce AirPods in Vietnam for the first time this quarter.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The novel coronavirus pandemic has forced companies all around the world to adjust their plans, but Apple seems to have weathered the storm relatively well. Despite the rumored March event never coming to pass, Apple still launched a cheaper MacBook Air and a new iPad Pro with a LiDAR Scanner in March. A month later, the 2020 iPhone SE made its debut, and just this week, a highly-anticipated MacBook Pro upgrade was unveiled.

By all accounts, Apple has managed to stay on schedule for 2020 so far, but according to a new report from Nikkei Asian Review, that may not be the case for the rest of the year. The same sources that told Nikkei that Apple slashed its orders for AirPods by more than 10% earlier this year now say “the plan to introduce an update of the AirPods later this year is also currently affected and delayed by the disruptions of COVID-19.”

Samsung proves once again that it will copy literally anything Apple does

%name Samsung proves once again that it will copy literally anything Apple does by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Samsung this week announced its plan to introduce a new debit card.
  • The company’s new and “innovative” debit card will launch this summer but Samsung didn’t provide us with additional details.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

By now, we’re pretty accustomed to seeing Samsung draw inspiration from Apple’s product line and outright steal some of the company’s more well-known iPhone features. In fact, Samsung’s penchant for looking to Apple for guidance runs so deep that they’ve even copied the icon Apple uses for Face ID. This, of course, shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone who closely followed Apple and Samsung’s blockbuster patent battle a few years ago. If you recall, the lawsuit saw the release of an internal 132-page Samsung document which laid out in specific detail how to blatantly copy some of the iPhone’s more innovative software features.

Flash forward to 2020 and Samsung’s still up to its old tricks. Late this week, Samsung announced a new plan to roll out an “innovative” debit card. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but this all sounds vaguely familiar to something Apple unveiled in March of last year.
