Netflix released its new 10-episode series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance on Friday, leading into the long Labor Day weekend, giving fans of fantasy adventures like this a new world to dive into.

It’s actually a prequel to the Jim Henson 1983 movie, The Dark Crystal, which got dramatically overshadowed when it was released back then by a movie about an alien you might have heard of — Steve Spielberg’s E.T., which opened six months prior in December 1982.

It’s not often that licensed content outshines Netflix’s original releases, but that’s certainly the case in the first week of September. Sunday, September 1st is packed with solid third-party flicks, from Stripes to Superbad to 300. Plus, The Two Towers and The Return of the King are coming back to Netflix, so if you’ve got nothing better to do on this lazy Sunday ahead of Labor Day, why not post up on your couch and watch The Lord of the Rings?

The one Netflix original series that I am intrigued by this week is The Spy, which stars Sacha Baron Cohen and “is inspired by the real-life story of former Mossad agent, Eli Cohen, who successfully goes undercover in Syria in the early 1960s.” Not a typical role for the Borat star, but could be fascinating.

A few years back, Samsung made an effort to popularize an ‘eye-tracking’ feature on its line of Galaxy flagships. It was a novel idea, but it didn’t exactly take the world by storm. While such a feature didn’t quite resonate with a mainstream audience, that’s not to see that there aren’t use-case scenarios where eye-tracking software can be incredibly useful.

“Jopper” is the affection fan-named pairing of old childhood flames Jim Hopper and Joyce Byers on Netflix’s Stranger Things, with the bestowing of that nickname a testament not only to how much fans adore the gruff sheriff and loving mom but also how perfectly matched the actors are who portray them.

In the opening scene of Amazon’s new Game of Thrones-style fantasy series Carnival Row — set in a kind of steampunk, alternate universe version of Victorian London that’s populated by humans as well as magical creatures — we see a persecuted group of fairies running for their lives. Shots ring out in a forest as the humans who populate the fictional city of The Burgue literally hunt them down, setting up a kind of Make The Burgue Great Again dynamic that casts a shadow over the storyline that we eventually come to learn also involves a serial killer preying on the fairies.

If your local cineplex is especially quite this week, it might be because there isn’t much to see. Sure, there are still a few holdovers from previous weeks, but not a single major blockbuster hit theaters this week.
