Astronomers spot distant gas giant on a bizarre journey around its star

%name Astronomers spot distant gas giant on a bizarre journey around its star by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

In our solar system, each planet has a reasonably well-defined and mostly circular path that it follows around the Sun. This, astronomers think, is true of many other star systems. But as with anything, in the vastness of the universe, there are bound to be outliers. The distant gas giant exoplanet known as HR 5183 b is one such outlier.

Unlike any planets in our own system, HR 5183 b’s orbit around its host star is stretched to the extreme. Rather than being shaped like a circle, it’s shaped like a long, narrow egg, and this extreme eccentricity is making scientists question just how it came to be in the first place.

Google’s Pixel might not be affected by the US-China trade war

%name Google’s Pixel might not be affected by the US China trade war by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Google upcoming Pixel 4 flagship is likely to be just as pricey as its predecessor, if not even more expensive. Google didn’t make it a secret when it launched the Pixel line a few years ago that it is going after the premium market, and that it wants to compete with the likes of Apple and Samsung rather than midrange vendors.

Google may have had to create a cheaper version of the Pixel 3 to increase sales, but the Pixel 4 is going to compete against all the other high-end phones of the year, from the Galaxy S10 to the iPhone 11. And Google is apparently taking steps to ensure that whatever comes of the US-China trade war, it won’t impact its ability to manufacture smartphones or force it to pass the extra costs to customers.

This could be our first look at the Galaxy Fold 2

%name This could be our first look at the Galaxy Fold 2 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

As we get closer to the (supposed) release of Samsung’s (supposedly) fixed Galaxy Fold handset, a funny thing keeps happening. Not only do foldable smartphones seem to be a serious fixture within Samsung’s long-term product roadmap, such that the company keeps patenting one foldable design after another, but we might now have our first sense of what the Galaxy Fold 2 could look like.

Is Facebook thinking about charging money for access to its social network?

%name Is Facebook thinking about charging money for access to its social network? by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The morning of August 7th was a morning like any other. The only thing special happening in the tech world on that day was the Galaxy Note 10 Unpacked event. But even that wasn’t such a big deal, considering that everything about Samsung’s new flagship had leaked well in advance of the show.

Little did we know that Facebook, early that morning, may have made a simple and unobservable change to its website that would puzzle us weeks later. Fast-forward to late August, and now we’re wondering if Facebook is suddenly going to start charging us to sign up for its social media network in the future.

NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope has proven to be one of the most powerful tools in the agency’s arsenal for over a decade and a half, giving us gorgeous views of distant objects using the telescope’s ultra-sensitive infrared sensors. This week, the telescope celebrated its 16th year in space, and NASA wants to make the most of it.

In a new post by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, NASA highlights 16 of the best images Spitzer captured during its lengthy mission. The images, which include distant galaxies, massive stars, and clusters of space dust, are all pure astronomy eye candy.

You can get Hulu half off for 6 months right now, thanks to Chrissy Teigen

%name You can get Hulu half off for 6 months right now, thanks to Chrissy Teigen by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The streaming service market is about to get significantly more crowded when Apple and Disney throw their hats into the ring in November, but the competition is already pretty heated as it stands today. Netflix is still the service to beat, but Hulu has done its best to undercut the home of Stranger Things by lowering the price of its ad-supported plan in response to Netflix’s price hikes and offering frequent deals that slash that price even further.

In celebration of Chrissy Teigen joining the service with an original cooking show called Family Style, Hulu is giving new subscribers the opportunity to sign up for the ad-supported plan for six months at $2.99 per month. That’s a 50% discount off the standard price. After six months, the price goes back to $5.99 per month.

Fitbit’s new Versa 2 looks like a serious Apple Watch rival

%name Fitbit’s new Versa 2 looks like a serious Apple Watch rival by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Apple is expected to introduce new Apple Watch models at its annual September unveiling of new iPhones and other products, but Fitbit decided to go ahead and get the jump on the company by teasing a forthcoming Versa 2 smartwatch. It will cost $199.95 and launch on Sept. 15 – with a ton of features that’s already led to the watch being talked up as a serious competitor to Apple’s signature wearable.

Among some of the enhancements Fitbit brought to the Versa 2, it has an AMOLED screen that can stay always-on (unlike the Apple Watch, which lacks an always-on display and forces you to raise your wrist to “wake” the watch). Likewise, Fitbit is promising up to five days of battery life with the Versa 2, compared to a little less than half that which you get from an Apple Watch.
