Microsoft contractors listened to conversations from Xbox One users

In a story that shouldn’t surprise anyone at this point, Vice is reporting that contractors working for Microsoft were able to listen to voice commands and full-on conversations spoken by Xbox One users. Similar to stories we’ve seen involving Siri and other virtual assistants, audio of conversations was sometimes recorded by the Xbox when certain trigger words were registered by mistake.

Naturally, the reason contractors were listening to audio in the first place was to improve the overall reliability of the software. Still, the notion of contractors listening to user audio — especially when children are involved — is bound to raise a few eyebrows.

For those of you waiting for Samsung to finally make good on its promise as of a few weeks ago that its embarrassing Galaxy Fold design flubs have been fixed and that the phone will finally be released in September — well, keep waiting. We still don’t have a hard date for that release, and yet Samsung has nevertheless stayed busy behind the scenes cranking out designs for all kinds of new foldable phones that may or may not actually ever see the light of day.

On the heels of getting word that Motorola’s foldable Razr — based on the phone maker’s iconic series of clamshell phones — should be out by the end of this year, a newly published Samsung patent for a foldable phone with a clamshell design has just been spotted.

A huge asteroid hurtling toward Earth will fly by us next month

%name A huge asteroid hurtling toward Earth will fly by us next month by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Some astronomers have suggested that Earth is overdue for a large asteroid impact, and that we’re living on borrowed time until we can shore up our planetary defenses to protect us from a true “planet-killer” space rock. With a potentially mile-wide asteroid headed to our neck of the woods in September, that notion may be enough to make your palms sweat, but it seems luck is on our side once again.

The object known as 467317 (2000 QW7) may lack a flashy nickname, but it more than makes up for it in size. The space rock is estimated to be anywhere from around 3,000 feet to nearly a mile and a half wide, putting it in the running to be one of the more frightening space rocks to show its face near our planet.

The iOS 13 beta release schedule has been a bit of a roller coaster, but with September fast approaching, Apple only has a few more weeks to work on the software before it goes live. Of course, the significance of the tweaks and bug fixes in recent betas has taken a tumble, and there’s not much to write home about.

Nevertheless, if you want to stay up to date, you can download iOS 13 public beta 7 right now, coming just a few short hours after iOS 13 developer beta 8 launched on Wednesday. It’s honestly getting hard to keep up.

‘Black Panther 2’ might be one of the first movies of MCU Phase 5

%name ‘Black Panther 2’ might be one of the first movies of MCU Phase 5 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Marvel a few weeks ago revealed no less than 10 titles that will be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 4, which will span from May 1st, 2020 to November 5th, 2021. Unlike the previous three phases, the MCU will get a large TV component thanks to Disney+, which will be the home of several TV series featuring the same characters (and actors) from the movies.

At the event, Marvel also confirmed that sequels for Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Guardians of the Galaxy are in the works, although these won’t be included in Phase 4. While Marvel has yet to confirm it, Black Panther 2 might be one of the first Phase 5 films, according to a recent Martin Freeman interview.

Apple’s iPhone 12 could be a major problem for Samsung in more ways than one

%name Apple’s iPhone 12 could be a major problem for Samsung in more ways than one by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

In an effort to further diversify its supply chain, Apple is “aggressively testing” flexible OLED displays from China’s BOE Technology Group for its 2020 iPhone models. Sources have told Nikkei Asian Review that Apple is in the final stages of certification for the advanced display technology, which would serve the dual purpose of lowering costs, as well as reducing the company’s reliance on Samsung, which is one of Apple’s primary suppliers.

When Apple launched the iPhone X, Samsung was its sole supplier of OLED screens, as no other supplier was able to meet the company’s demand for the expensive component. LG Display was added to the supply chain in 2018, but Samsung continued to provide the vast majority of the displays for the iPhone XS.

Huawei has a secret office in Iran, because there hasn’t been enough bad news about the company

%name Huawei has a secret office in Iran, because there hasn’t been enough bad news about the company by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

As if Huawei didn’t already have enough negative press coverage and headlines to grapple with, it seems that the company’s detained chief financial officer has provided fodder for still more.

After she was detained by Canadian officials back in December at the behest of US officials, Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou reportedly told a Canadian border agent that the Chinese company operates an office in Iran. Her answer came after the agent questioned her about whether Huawei sold products to companies it shouldn’t be doing business with — and after she answered “I don’t know” at first.
