  • It’s been more than a decade since HBO’s The Sopranos ended, but creator David Chase decided to have a little fun recently and write some new coronavirus-themed dialogue for a one-off “scene.”
  • Two former Sopranos cast members performed the dialogue on their podcast, Talking Sopranos, which you can read an excerpt from below.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

First, we had the cast of Parks and Recreation reunite for a one-off, coronavirus-themed reunion episode. Now, The Sopranos creator David Chase has written an all-new scene (coronavirus-themed, of course) incorporating characters including Tony Soprano himself from the classic HBO mob drama — the first such new Sopranos dialogue written by Chase since the beloved series took its bow in 2007.

The scene (which you can read dialogue from below — and, of course, consider this your adult language warning) involves some of the major characters basically sitting around and talking about how much life has changed because of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

This incredible photo of the Moon is actually ‘impossible’

  • Photographer Andrew McCarthy captured an image of the Moon that is quite literally “impossible.”
  • By stitching together over a dozen individual images, McCarthy created a photo that shows the lunar surface in high contrast.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

When you gaze up at the Moon at night — weather permitting, of course — you’re treated to a lovely sight. The Moon is awesome, and it has a whole lot of personality. Covered in craters that tell a story of billions of years of impacts both large and small. The particularly gorgeous image you see above is that same Moon, shot in a way that reveals every nook and cranny in high contrast.

The photo is, as its creator puts it, “impossible.” It was shot using a technique that maximizes the contrast of each tiny imperfection on its surface, making for a glorious, surreal image.

Disney+ subscriber base skyrocketed by 62% over the last five weeks

  • Disney+ now has 54.5 million subscribers.
  • Disney+ saw its subscriber base skyrocket by 62% over the last five weeks alone.
  • As a point of comparison, Netflix currently has more than 182 million subscribers across the globe, and 69.9 million subscribers in North America.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Disney posted its earnings results for the recent March quarter and revealed that Disney+ now has more than 54.5 million subscribers. The success of Disney+ was something of a rare bright spot this quarter as Disney saw significant revenue drops across its parks and cruise ship divisions on account of the coronavirus.

The success of Disney+ is beyond impressive given how crowded the streaming market is these days. With established players like Netflix and HBO rolling out new content at breakneck speed, the fact that Disney+ has been able to garner nearly 55 million subscribers in less than five months is nothing short of astounding.

Banksy is back with a new coronavirus piece celebrating health workers

%name Banksy is back with a new coronavirus piece celebrating health workers by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The mysterious artist Banksy is back with a new artistic creation, this time inspired by the front-line healthcare workers risking their lives during the coronavirus pandemic.
  • The image is of a young boy ignoring his superhero toys to play with the figure of a nurse that’s wearing a mask and a superhero-like cape. It will eventually be auctioned to raise money for Britain’s NHS charities.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Just a couple of weeks after the famously elusive street artist Banksy unveiled his newest creation — a set of painted rats in his bathroom that reflected the quarantine home life which is now the status quo around the world, thanks to the coronavirus — he’s back with a new piece. It’s another piece that’s related to the current pandemic, but where the last one was lighthearted and fun, this one is a salute to the front-line healthcare workers risking their lives to protect us.

Banksy’s newest piece, which you can see on his Instagram account, is called Game Changer, and it’s also on display inside Southhampton general hospital in the UK. It depicts a young boy ignoring his superhero toys including Batman and Spider-Man to play with the figurine of a nurse who’s masked and wearing a cape. “Thanks for all you’re doing,” reads a note Banksy left for hospital staff. “I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if it’s only black and white.”

EA hints at games being ‘upgraded free’ to PS5 and Xbox Series X

%name EA hints at games being ‘upgraded free’ to PS5 and Xbox Series X by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • EA mentioned in an earnings call that it has to factor in games that can be “upgraded free for the next generation” in its projections for the upcoming year.
  • It’s unclear what exactly they meant by “upgraded free,” but it sounds like both the PS5 and Xbox Series X will be able to play EA games purchased on PS4 and Xbox One.
  • Microsoft has already announced a Smart Delivery feature for Xbox Series X.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

As exciting as new consoles can be, not everyone is ready or willing to upgrade on day one. Both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X are projected to be more expensive at launch than their predecessors, and even if they aren’t, we’re in the middle of a viral pandemic that has also heavily impacted the economy. Simply put, spending hundreds of dollars on a new console isn’t going to be a priority for many people this holiday season, but if they plan to upgrade at some point in the future, they are faced with an interesting dilemma.

If you plan on picking up a PS5 or an Xbox Series X a few months after launch, do you hold off on buying any games until then? We know the Xbox Series X will be backward compatible with the Xbox One, but we don’t know if all new titles will be supported right away. We also know that Sony is planning for the PS5 to be able to play the 100 most-played PS4 games at launch, but that doesn’t sound like it includes brand new titles.

This brings us to an EA earnings call on Tuesday night, during which COO Blake Jorgensen seemed to suggest that the studio’s upcoming games will be playable on both generations with a single purchase.

New coronavirus studies say sending kids back to school would be a major risk

%name New coronavirus studies say sending kids back to school would be a major risk by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Two new studies provide evidence that children may transmit the novel coronavirus, even if kids do not develop severe COVID-19 cases and aren’t as likely to experience complications following an infection.
  • The research indicates that social distancing may still be required for children, and decisions on returning school shouldn’t be hurried.
  • One study even showed that asymptomatic children may have viral loads as high as kids or adults showing symptoms, which could mean they’re just as contagious.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Children are less likely to develop severe cases of the novel coronavirus, but there are still exceptions. COVID-19 complications have killed patients under 20 years old, and doctors in the UK and US have already warned about frightening illnesses that have been documented in their countries.

Some people have argued that children might be less likely to contract the disease and less likely to transmit it. If those hypotheses turn out to be accurate, then opening schools in regions where the COVID-19 curve was flattened might make sense. However, new studies indicate that children can transmit the disease, suggesting that going back to school and kindergarten might not be a simple process.

Watch out, Zoom: Google Meet is now free for everyone

%name Watch out, Zoom: Google Meet is now free for everyone by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Google Meet, Google’s rival to Zoom, went live for everyone this week.
  • Google in recent weeks revamped its video conferencing software and added new features so as to better compete with Zoom.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

With the coronavirus leaving millions of people across the world stuck at home, video conferencing quickly emerged as a popular way for folks to keep in touch with friends and family. Before long, people started using video conferencing software for all sorts of different activities, including playing virtual games and hosting comedy shows.

As the coronavirus pandemic swept across the globe in March, Zoom seemingly came out of nowhere and quickly established itself as the de facto video chat software of choice. And if we’re being honest, it was well-deserved. Though Zoom admittedly had its fair share of security issues early on, the company’s software was more seamless than rival offerings. As a result, Google rushed back to the drawing board to bolster its own video conferencing software known as Google Meet.

People are giving up on social distancing at the worst possible time

%name People are giving up on social distancing at the worst possible time by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The coronavirus pandemic is starting to enter a new phase in the US, as states around the country begin the delicate process of opening up sections of their economy again weeks of lockdowns and business closures.
  • Data shows, however, that some people are apparently interpreting this as “back to normal” and, at the same time, are relaxing on adherence to social distancing guidelines.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

One of the worries you hear from some health experts regarding the growing number of states and cities that are starting to gradually “open back up again” following weeks of tight lockdowns because of the coronavirus is that it’s too early. There hasn’t been enough of a decline in new cases of the virus, and allowing people to leave their homes and to be in public again might be enough to cause a devastating spike in cases that undoes the benefits gained from all the time we spent sheltering at home.

There is, however, an even more ominous warning sign: Data is starting to show that people are adhering to social distancing guidelines less and less, at perhaps the worst time of all to be doing so.

Glowing waves crash onto California beaches thanks to the red tide

%name Glowing waves crash onto California beaches thanks to the red tide by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Bright blue waves are rolling across California beaches after a bloom of phytoplankton floods the shores.
  • The organisms, which appear red during the day, light up blue when disturbed at night
  • The spectacle is attracting onlookers who may be endangering themselves and others by ignoring social distancing mandates.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Brilliant blue waves are lighting up California beaches at night thanks to a bloom of bioluminescent plankton called Lingulodinium polyedra. What the species of tiny organisms lack in a flashy name it more than makes up for by actually being flashy. Like, literally.

During the day, the organisms crowd the surface near the shore, soaking up the sunlight and creating what is often called a “red tide.” At night, things get even more interesting, as the phytoplankton light up whenever they are disturbed. The result is a hypnotizing blue glow when anything from a dolphin to a human surface passes through the water.

Google lays out its new release plans for Android 11

%name Google lays out its new release plans for Android 11 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Google announced its new release timeline for Android 11 on Wednesday and a beta release event that will take the place of Google I/O on June 3rd.
  • The first Android 11 beta will now roll out on June 3rd — a month later than it was supposed to be made available to developers.
  • As a result, everything has been moved back by about a month, but the launch of Android 11 is still on track for Q3 2020.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

No major event planned for this spring or summer was spared from the coronavirus pandemic.

MWC, E3, WWDC, and Google I/O were all canceled due to the global health pandemic, and so companies have had to find creative ways to announce products and services they had planned on unveiling during those events. Microsoft is holding monthly events to show off Xbox Series X games and features, Apple is taking its Worldwide Developers Conference online, and now Google has made an announcement of its own.

The full reveal of Android 11 was initially going to be one of the highlights of Google I/O at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, but now that I/O has been taken off of the calendar, Google is instead asking Android fans to tune in for “#Android11: The Beta Launch Show” at 11AM ET on June 3rd. Dave Burke, Android VP of Engineering, will host the show and participate in a live Q&A session once the show has concluded.
