A pair of Apple Watches was recently recovered in perfectly fine working condition in Connecticut, where they’d spent two weeks at the bottom of a lake in one of the more remarkable stories we’ve seen so far about the resilience of Apple’s signature wearable device.

“One of” being the operative phrase, since it’s actually not the most impressive, but more on that later.

NASA’s Spitzer just spotted a galaxy perfectly aligned with Earth

%name NASA’s Spitzer just spotted a galaxy perfectly aligned with Earth by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope is capable of capturing some truly stunning snapshots of distant features in space, and usually, when we see images of vast spiral galaxies we get to see them face-first. A new photo shot by Spitzer of a distant galaxy called NGC 5866 is much different, but no less interesting.

We don’t really get to choose the angle at which we see distant galaxies, so astronomers can only work with what they’re given. In this case, galaxy NGC 5866 is positioned so that we’re seeing only its edge, making it look like a giant glowing splinter in space.

Microsoft contractors listen to your Skype and Cortana activity, but don’t freak out

%name Microsoft contractors listen to your Skype and Cortana activity, but don’t freak out by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Microsoft has now joined the ranks of Apple, Amazon, and Google for having contractors who’ve been caught listening to some user Skype and Cortana activity, with Microsoft (and those other tech companies) insisting that some degree of human review is necessary to help improve the services.

That may be cold comfort to users of those services who weren’t necessarily aware that someone on the other end may actually be listening when they give Cortana a command or utilize Skype’s translation service. This is not to imply the possibility of nefarious behavior here on the part of Microsoft, with the company adding that the recordings aren’t user-identifiable. But still.

NHTSA says Tesla’s Model 3 safety claims are ‘misleading’

%name NHTSA says Tesla’s Model 3 safety claims are ‘misleading’ by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Tesla has for years boasted about the perfect 5-star safety ratings its cars have received from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Now, in an odd turn of events that will perhaps not surprise longtime Tesla detractors, PlainSite recently discovered that the NHTSA last year hit Tesla with a cease-and-desist letter claiming that the company’s safety claims regarding the Model 3 are misleading. What’s more, it was discovered that the NHTSA brought the matter to the attention of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.

To be clear, there’s no issue with the Model 3’s 5-star safety rating. The car, by all accounts, is remarkably safe and impressively well-engineered. The NHTSA, however, is none too pleased with how Tesla decided to articulate and spin the test results to the public. Specifically, the NHTSA takes issue with Tesla claiming that the Model 3 has the “lowest probability of injury of any vehicle ever tested by the NHTSA.”

Netflix has emerged the winner of an intense bidding war to be the next creative home for David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the Game of Thrones creators who’ve reached a deal to develop TV series and films exclusively for the streaming giant.

That’s according to Variety, which reported confirmation from Netflix that the pair of showrunners — whose creative choices for the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones sparked divisive fan reaction but nabbed them an Emmy nod anyway — had finalized a deal with the streamer.

Watch SpaceX catch its rocket fairing in a massive net

After a number of delays due to hardware issues as well as bad weather, SpaceX finally managed to send the AMOS-17 communications satellite into Earth orbit last night. The mission went well, with the SpaceX Falcon 9 completing its third mission, but due to the nature of this particular launch, it wasn’t possible for the company to recover its rocket stage a third time.

However, that didn’t stop SpaceX from recovering another valuable piece of its high-tech hardware. The nosecone fairing is something that the company has been trying to catch and reuse for some time, and it finally snagged one for the first time back in late June. Now, SpaceX has done it again, and we have video of the catch to prove it.

%name ‘Home Alone’ is getting a reboot on Disney+, and we’re not sure how to feel by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Disney keeps upping its streaming game ante, first announcing the arrival of Disney+ in November and then yesterday a mega-bundle that includes Disney+, as well as Hulu and ESPN+, for the same price as some Netflix subscriptions. But the entertainment giant isn’t finished trying to front-load the launch of its Netflix rival by giving people plenty of reasons well in advance to sign up.

During the company’s third-quarter earnings conference call with analysts, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that a number of reboots are also coming to the service, including one of Home Alone.

Apple’s first foldable device could land in 2020, but might not be an iPhone

%name Apple’s first foldable device could land in 2020, but might not be an iPhone by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

We’re well into August, and the foldable phones that we were promised still aren’t here. The Galaxy Fold turned out to be a huge failure instead of the breakthrough gadget Samsung wanted it to be, and the Mate X was also postponed. The foldable Motorola RAZR is also missing in action, and other significant players in the mobile business have yet to unveil their takes on foldable phones.

When it comes to Apple, the company is widely expected to launch foldable products of its own, although there’s nothing official from the company to back up any of those claims. A new report, however, indicates that Apple’s first foldable product might not be an iPhone, although a foldable iPhone would follow it.
