It’s been a few months now since Israel’s Beresheet lunar lander experienced a last-second glitch and smashed into the Moon rather than landing softly on it. The mission, while impressive as a privately-funding effort, ultimately came up short, but part of its payload may still fulfill its intended purpose.

Included on the spacecraft was a cellular “library” that includes plant and animal cells and human DNA. It was created by the Arch Mission, which strives to create “backups” of Earth, and the collection of material included on the Beresheet lander contains “enough DNA to regenerate life on Earth,” according to founder Nova Spivack.

Russia can’t get enough of America, it seems. A confidential U.N. report obtained by Reuters reveals that North Korea has been employing a range of sophisticated cyberattacks in an effort to bankroll its development of weapons of mass destruction.

According to the report, which was compiled by experts over the past few months, North Korea thus far has made upwards of $2 billion via a number of schemes designed to “steal funds from financial institutions and cryptocurrency exchanges.” Though specifics remain a bit murky at the moment, North Korean’s malicious cyber activities reportedly encompass more than 30 independent attacks across 17 countries.

Earlier this year, NASA was forced to finally say goodbye to the trust Opportunity rover. Historically, Apple hasn’t spent as much on Research and Development (R&D) as some of its rivals. Even as recently as 5 years ago, Apple’s R&D expenditures were easily eclipsed by any number of companies, including Google, Microsoft, and Samsung.

This can partly be explained by Steve Jobs’ belief that innovation is more about having the right people working on the right projects, as opposed to blindly throwing money at various research initiatives that don’t end up going anywhere.

The AMOS-17 communications satellite should already be in space. The fact that it’s not is the result of a rare combination of technical hitches and bad weather, but that isn’t going to stop SpaceX from trying yet again tonight.

The launch is currently scheduled for 6:53 p.m. EDT, and as usual SpaceX will be providing a live stream of the event beginning roughly 15 minutes before the launch window opens. The launch window will be open just under an hour and a half, closing at 8:21 p.m.
