Not every update to Google’s software is a gamechanger, but some relatively small additions often end up becoming fan favorites. One such addition with the potential to excite some users began rolling out over the weekend — Google Assistant can now read messages out loud from major third-party apps. Previously, it could only read SMS messages and would skip every other unread message, but this is no longer the case.

According to Android Police, some of the apps with access to the feature include Slack, WhatsApp, and Telegram, though it appears a wide range of apps are now supported. Plus, in addition to having your messages read out loud from these apps, you can also answer them directly from Google Assistant.

People keep finding frogs in their packaged salads

It sounds like an urban legend — a friend of a friend who knows someone who once took a bite of a live frog that had somehow found its way into their salad bowl — but discovering animals mixed in with pre-packaged salads has actually become something of a trend.

In fact, there have been so many reports of packaged salads containing creatures both alive and dead that researchers decided to investigate. The paper, published in Science of The Total Environment, offers details on the types of animals found in store-bought salads, and where such incidents have been reported most often.

Wild video shows a gang leader attempt a prison escape dressed up as his 19-year-old daughter

%name Wild video shows a gang leader attempt a prison escape dressed up as his 19 year old daughter by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

People have always been fascinated by prisons, which is why it’s no surprise that Hollywood has been obsessed with the genre for decades now. From shows like Prison Break and Orange Is the New Black to docu-series like Lockup, the masses simply can’t get enough of prison-related content.

Having said that, real-life prison stories can often be far more compelling and outrageous than even the most creative scenarios Hollywood writers can dream up. As a prime example, a gang leader in Brazil recently tried to sneak out of a prison dressed up as his daughter. In something of an elaborate scheme, Clauvino da Silva donned an eerily realistic silicone mask, a long dark wig, a pink shirt designed for a teenager, and tight denim jeans.

SpaceX repairs and bad weather force multiple satellite launch delays

%name SpaceX repairs and bad weather force multiple satellite launch delays by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Sending stuff into space isn’t easy. SpaceX has made the process of making satellite deliveries into Earth orbit look incredibly easy, but there are still a million things that can derail an otherwise routine mission, and the delayed launch of the AMOS-17 communications satellite by Spacecom is a great reminder of that.

The mission was originally scheduled to be launched on July 24th, but poor weather forced a delay. The backup launch window on the following day was also marked by bad weather and yet another delay. The skies eventually cleared, but that’s when SpaceX’s Falcon 9 began acting up.

Fossil’s newest smartwatch can actually take iPhone voice calls

%name Fossil’s newest smartwatch can actually take iPhone voice calls by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

One of the highlights of Fossil’s fifth-generation Wear OS smartwatch, which the company unveiled Monday morning, is a feature meant to appeal to Apple users that’s also a first for a Wear OS by Google device.

The new watch, which Fossil is calling the Gen 5, will include a proprietary app later this fall (not at the watch’s launch, unfortunately) which will allow iPhone users to answer tethered calls. Which of course may be attractive especially to iPhone users who don’t yet own an Apple Watch — and which would likewise potentially preclude them from buying one in the future if they spring for Fossil’s device.

Many of the major tech companies are racing to go green these days, implementing a variety of initiatives from more sustainable manufacturing practices to more eco-friendly overall operations and even products like the solar-powered smartphone we told you about on Monday.

On Monday, Google unveiled a sweeping pledge along these same lines, which includes the company’s promise to start including recycled materials in all of its Made By Google products. It’s a goal the company says will be achieved over the next three years and includes all the hardware in that product portfolio, from Pixel phones to Google Home Speakers, Nest devices, charging stands and much more.

Scientists spotted an incredibly old star breathing its dying breath

%name Scientists spotted an incredibly old star breathing its dying breath by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Age is a relative thing. With our finite (and relatively short) lifespans, humans tend to think of anything older than 100 years as being “really old,” but when talking about astronomy, a century (or even a million years) is a drop in the bucket. So, when astronomers say they’ve discovered an incredibly old star, you know it must be truly ancient.

In a new paper published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, scientists describe the discovery of a star named SMSS J160540.18–144323.1. Its name may lack style, but it more than makes it up for that shortcoming by being one of the oldest stars ever discovered. Unfortunately, it won’t be around much longer.
