At this point, there’s a lot about the Netflix experience that seems so deeply ingrained in the way we collectively experience the streaming giant that it’s hard to imagine the way things used to be before — or how we spent our leisure time before we had so much content at our fingertips, so easily within reach. And it’s certainly hard to imagine anyone pining again for the days when the inventory at those antiquated bricks-and-mortar retail stores determined what we could watch and when.

As Netflix’s original series Orange Is the New Black draws to a close, with the final season having landed on the streamer this past Friday, this is also as good a time as any to look back at another of the experiences Netflix popularized: The practice of binge-watching. It appears that Microsoft heard me whining about the recent output of free games on both Xbox One and PS4, as the August selection for Games with Gold is the best I’ve seen in ages. As this console generation begins to wind down, Microsoft has made two of its best exclusive titles free for the month of August. The first — Gears of War 4 — is my favorite game in the series, and the second — Forza 6 — is an incredible racing game.

Those two titles honestly would have been plenty, but the classic dungeon crawler Torchlight is being given away too, as is the underrated Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, which hit the Xbox 360 way back in 2010.

In a rundown Tuesday afternoon of his company’s performance over the most recent fiscal third quarter, Apple CEO Tim Cook accentuated the positives despite the ho-hum nature of the three-month period. NASA’s Apollo 11 mission broke new ground in a lot of obvious ways. Landing humans on the lunar surface was a huge accomplishment, as was the first (and each subsequent) moonwalk. But not everything about Apollo 11 is mere nostalgia for NASA, and as the Jet Propulsion Laboratory explains in a new post, one experiment installed on the Moon is actually still returning useful data today.

Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin didn’t just walk on the Moon, they conducted a whole heap of science while there. One of the experiments required the installation of a glass prism array on the surface. Later, Apollo 14 and 15 added even more prisms, and scientists have been using them to measure the distance between the Moon and Earth ever since.

I’ve been waiting to see The Irishman for quite a while, ever since I heard that Robert DeNiro and Martin Scorsese were attached to the project. The film was acquired by Netflix a couple of years ago, and is based on Charles Brandt’s book, I Heard You Paint Houses, that tells the supposedly real story of Jimmy Hoffa’s death. The biographical film has an impressive cast, a massive budget for a Netflix film, and now — finally — a release date.

As carmakers continue to pack their newest models with all manner of “smart” technology, researchers are concerned that connected vehicles will become an increasingly irresistible target for hackers. A new study by scientists with the Georgia Institute of Technology and Multiscale Systems, Inc., suggests that if hackers find serious vulnerabilities in internet-connected cars they could easily halt traffic in entire cities with the push of a button.

The study uses the science of physics to predict how traffic patterns are affected by vehicles that stop in the middle of the road. By factoring in various types of roads, the number of lanes, traffic density, the team simulated how even a relatively small number of “frozen” connected cars could bring entire cities to a total halt.

Next week in Las Vegas at the Black Hat security conference, Google Project Zero researcher Natalie Silvanovich is set to give a presentation about interactionless iPhone vulnerabilities that can run without the victim taking any action at all. The talk will come on the heels of Silvanovich and a Google Project Zero colleague, Samuel Groß, discovering half a dozen iOS vulnerabilities that can be exploited via iMessage — although five of those flaws, according to ZDNet, were fixed with last week’s iOS 12.4 update.

However, Apple has as of the time of this writing apparently not yet completely fixed the final bug. The iOS 12.4 release actually patched all six flaws, but according to Silvanovich, the release didn’t fully resolve the sixth flaw, which is consequently being kept under wraps for now.
