  • The National Institutes of Health produced new imagery of the novel coronavirus that causes the deadly COVID-19 disease.
  • The image shows SARS-CoV-2 replicas exiting the body of a dying cell that had been infiltrated by the virus.
  • The created was obtained with the help of a sophisticated microscope and it shows us how the novel coronavirus kills cells.

Imagine there’s anywhere from a few thousand to a few million thugs waiting on your doorstep to attack you every time you leave the house. That’s how you have to think about the invisible coronavirus threat. COVID-19 is a very serious disease and it’s out there, even if you can’t see the tiny novel coronavirus that causes it. Even people who appear to be healthy could have it and they could pass it on to you with ease. The virus is quite good at spreading in a community, and it’s very devious. Symptoms might not appear up to 14 days after the infection, and that’s if they appear at all. That’s why some sort of social distancing might be required for quite a long time to come, even after authorities relax some of the current rules.

If you still don’t believe the SARS-CoV-2 is a real danger or if you just want to see this horrific microorganism that upended your life, we have just the image for you. The following picture shows exactly how the virus kills the cells it infects.

  • Social distancing due to coronavirus should continue until summer, researchers now say.
  • Rolling back the containment efforts too quickly will result in a huge rebound of new cases, according to predictive models.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Ever since the novel coronavirus outbreak became a pandemic that forced us to live the vast majority of our lives inside our homes and away from just about everyone, there’s been one question at the top of everyone’s mind: When will this all end? Scientists are working on vaccines, researchers are testing a variety of treatment options, but we’re still no closer to a return to normalcy.

Now, a team of scientists from the University of Notre Dame suggests that the current state of lockdown and social distancing in the United States should be maintained if we want to avoid a second huge wave of infections and deaths.

A dog just tested positive for coronavirus for the first time in the US

%name A dog just tested positive for coronavirus for the first time in the US by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • In a recent novel coronavirus research study at Duke University, an entire family was tested for the virus, including their two dogs and their cat.
  • The family’s pug, Winston, tested positive for the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, making him the first confirmed case of coronavirus in a dog in the United States.
  • The family says that Winston was only sick for a few days and is feeling much better now.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

In the same week that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expanded its social distancing guidelines to include pets, the first dog has tested positive for the novel coronavirus in the United States. WRAL in North Carolina reports that a Chapel Hill family participated in a study at Duke University in which the father, mother, and son tested positive for the virus. They also had their pets tested, and their pug, Winston, was positive as well.

Dr. Chris Woods, the principal investigator of the study, confirmed that the “virus that causes COVID-19 was detected” in the dog and said he believed this was the first time a dog has tested positive in the country.

How to get faster home internet without paying more to your ISP

%name How to get faster home internet without paying more to your ISP by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Speeding up your home internet speed and making your connections more reliable is much easier and less expensive than you think.
  • Buffering and slow internet speeds are always frustrating, but it’s even worse in the age of coronavirus because everyone is spending so much time online.
  • Before you do something drastic like buying a new router or a pricey mesh Wi-Fi system, there are a pair of less expensive options you should explore.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

You’re finally done with a long day of work. Maybe you grab a quick bite to eat, or maybe you skip the food and pour yourself a drink. You plop yourself down on the couch, turn on the TV, and get ready to stream the next episode of your new favorite show that you’ve been waiting all day to see. You settle in as the show begins, and you can’t believe what’s about to happen. Then, all of a sudden, facepalm: The image starts to get all pixelated or even freezes completely as your TV, set-top box, or console struggles to download the video.

It’s so very aggravating and it happens all the time. What you might not realize, however, is that there’s such an easy way for most people to fix this irksome issue.

A lot of the time, your Wi-Fi connection is the main source of the problem. Sometimes there’s interference, or if you live in a big household it could be a congestion problem. A lot of times it’s an issue with range though, and you can get away with a cheap fix by picking up a Wi-Fi range extender. The best-selling TP-Link model on Amazon is on sale right now for just $19.99, or the newer version that’s more than twice as fast can be had for just $29.99.

TP-Link N300 WiFi Extender | Covers Up to 800 Sq.ft | Up to 300Mbps | WiFi Range Extender, Repe…: $19.99

TP-Link AC750 WiFi Extender | Covers Up to 1200 Sq.ft and 20 Devices Up to 750Mbps| Dual Band W…: $29.99

If you want an even better fix to the problem, you need to ditch wireless on your device and switch to a wired internet connection. Of course, no one wants to spend hundreds of dollars installing Ethernet, and we would never suggest that. Why bother when you can instantly transform any regular old power outlet into an Ethernet port in about 2 seconds?

Head over to Amazon and check out the TP-Link AV1000 Powerline Ethernet Adapter. It really couldn’t be any simpler. Just plug one box into a power outlet near your router and the other box into an outlet near your TV or computer. Connect to each box separately using a regular old Ethernet cable, and presto! You’ve got yourself a gigabit Ethernet connection that you just installed yourself in seconds. What’s more, this awesome top-rated powerline kit is on sale right now on Amazon for only $49.99.

TP-Link AV1000 Powerline Ethernet Adapter – Gigabit Port, Plug&Play, Power Saving, Ethernet Ove…: $49.99

Check out this review from Amazon to get an idea of what you can look forward to when you get one:

Works well. I have a PS4 Pro and the wifi connection is terrible. It’s sad that Sony is actually aware of this & their only advice is to get a hardline into it. My router is in a different room & it can’t be moved. It wasn’t even that far away. My Apple TV and phone had no problem connecting to it in the living room.

Anyways, I got this because I use Playstation Vue for television as well as the usual streaming services like Netflix and games. I would constantly get kicked off the network & it was becoming unbearable, like literally every hour it would go down or start running super slow. I did some searching on the internet and found that unfortunately, I wasn’t the only person with this problem on their PS4. I got this upon the positive reviews from other PS4 owners.

Set up was super simple. Took all of 30 seconds. The connection has been great so far. My internet speed is 60 down and with this when I tested the network on the PS4 it came in at 40, which is way more acceptable than the 15mb/s download I was getting prior with the PS4 wifi. Some of the reviews here on Amazon say after a few months they start to suck, so I guess we’ll see. Thus far though it has been great and I haven’t dropped my network connection nor has it slowed to a crawl either. I would definitely recommend these for people who are having the same issue I am and can’t move their router.

That’s just one example of an endless number of people who have eliminated the annoyances of Wi-Fi without spending a ton of money to have Ethernet installed in their homes. What are you waiting for?!

Next wave of stimulus checks goes out tomorrow – how to see if you’re getting one

%name Next wave of stimulus checks goes out tomorrow – how to see if you’re getting one by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Millions of Americans have been waiting for their coronavirus stimulus checks to arrive, and the next wave of IRS payments is set to go out on Thursday, April 30.
  • Here’s how to check if you’re getting a stimulus check, and when it’s estimated to arrive.
  • The payments stem from the coronavirus pandemic and the $2.2 trillion emergency stimulus legislation Congress passed in March to deal with the economic fallout from the virus.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

To underscore what a historic and unusual moment this is right now for the US, not only are most Americans eligible for direct cash payments from the federal government to help blunt some of the financial pain associated with the coronavirus pandemic — it seems that money is also being accompanied by a one-page letter from President Trump.

Along with the checks, the next big wave of which goes out tomorrow, Americans have started reporting the arrival of a letter on White House stationery from the president, which somberly promises that: “As we wage total war on this invisible enemy, we are also working around the clock to protect hardworking Americans like you from the consequences of the economic shutdown. We are fully committed to ensuring that you and your family have the support you need to get through this time.” At the bottom is Trump’s signature, in his familiar, idiosyncratic scrawl.

Apple releases iOS 13.5 beta with exposure notification API

%name Apple releases iOS 13.5 beta with exposure notification API by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Apple rolled out iOS 13.5 developer beta 3 and iPadOS 13.5 developer beta 3 on Wednesday.
  • iOS 13.5 beta 3 has the exposure notification API from Apple and Google that health agency developers will use to build apps for contact tracing of people who test positive for the novel coronavirus.
  • iOS 13.5 will likely be the final numbered entry before iOS 14 arrives this fall.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Apple released the third developer betas for iOS 13.5 and iPadOS 13.5 on Wednesday. The main feature of this beta release is the addition of the notification exposure API that Apple and Google teamed up to create, giving many public health agency developers a tool that they can use to build contact tracing apps to track people who might be infected with the novel coronavirus. Google released a new beta of Google Play Services as well that also contains the API. On May 1st, Apple and Google will share more details with developers, including sample code.

Although Apple is referring to this release as iOS 13.5 beta 3, it’s worth noting that the previous beta release was iOS 13.4.5 beta 2. As 9to5Mac explains, any iOS release with a new SDK has to have a new version number too, which is why there won’t be a beta 1 or beta 2 of iOS 13.5. In case you were curious.

10 hidden Amazon device deals you probably didn’t even know about

%name 10 hidden Amazon device deals you probably didn’t even know about by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Head over to Amazon’s dedicated Amazon devices deals page right now and you’ll only find a few available deals, none of which are really all that appealing.
  • What you might not realize, however, is that Amazon is running a ton of great deals right now on all sorts of Amazon devices, but they’re not listed on that page for some reason.
  • Here’s we’ve rounded up the 10 best Amazon device deals available right now, from a shockingly good Fire HD 8 Tablet sale to Echo speaker deals, a hidden Fire TV Stick 4K sale, and more.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Amazon’s daily deals page is completely hidden right now, though we recently told our readers how you can still find it. For the time being, Amazon is moving away from promoting deals on nonessential products and is instead focusing most of its efforts on delivering medical supplies to hospitals. You certainly can’t fault the company for that, but it won’t help you while you’re stuck in coronavirus quarantine and you need some new gadgets to help pass the time. Lucky for you, there is a slew of great unadvertised deals that you probably didn’t even realize were available.

We’ve been covering a wide range of sales, but there are particularly good deals right now on various Amazon devices. You wouldn’t know it, of course, because the Amazon devices deals page is pretty barren. Luckily for you, we’ve scoured the site and come up with the 10 best Amazon device deals on the entire site right now.

Kicking things off is a great sale that gets you a Certified Refurbished 32GB Fire HD 8 Tablet and a Show Mode Charging Dock for a grand total of just $97.98. 32GB Fire HD 8 Tablets retail for $110 and the Show Mode dock is another $40, bringing the total value of this bundle to a whopping $150! You can also get two brand new 16GB Fire HD Tablets right now for just $54.99 apiece, which is also a fantastic deal.

Fire HD 8 Tablet (8″ HD Display, 16 GB) – Blue: $54.99 each

Certified Refurbished Fire HD 8 Tablet (8″ HD Display, 32 GB) – Black with Show Mode Charging D…: $97.98

Next up, we have two outstanding deals on the Fire TV Stick 4K. If you’re lucky enough to be one of the select few for whom the coupon code 4KFIRETV works, you’ll slash this best-seller down to its lowest price ever — just $24.99. The only problem is there’s no telling who is eligible for the deal so you’ll have to try it to find out (more details here). If that doesn’t work, you can buy two at full price and get a $20 Amazon credit when you activate them (here are the terms and conditions).

Fire TV Stick 4K streaming device with Alexa built in, Dolby Vision, includes Alexa Voice Remot…: $24.99 (use code 4KFIRETV)

Fire TV Stick 4K streaming device with Alexa built in, Dolby Vision, includes Alexa Voice Remot…: Buy two, get a $20 Amazon credit

To wrap things up, we’ve got a bunch of terrific deals on Echo devices with hands-free Alexa.

The $130 Echo Show 8 is on sale for $99.99 today, the $50 Echo Dot is $29.99 or you can get two for $49.99 with coupon code DOT2PACK, and the $60 Echo Dot with Clock is down to $39.99 for a limited time.

Echo Show 8 – HD 8″ smart display with Alexa – Charcoal: $99.99

Echo Dot (3rd Gen) – Smart speaker with Alexa – Charcoal: $24.99 – $29.99 (use code DOT2PACK)

Echo Dot (3rd Gen) – Smart speaker with clock and Alexa – Sandstone: $39.99

The best Alexa speaker deal of all is definitely the sale that gets you a $100 3rd-Generation Echo for just $59.99, which is the all-time low price from Prime Day last year. The compact $90 Echo Show 5 is on sale for $69.99 right now, and the Echo Flex — which is Amazon’s smallest Alexa device ever — is down to just $19.99 for a limited time.

This is the most important Google Maps feature during the coronavirus crisis

%name This is the most important Google Maps feature during the coronavirus crisis by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • A Google Maps feature that allows anyone to create custom maps of their local region has seen a surge in usage this year.
  • Some authorities and regular users rely on the My Maps functionality to create custom maps that can be helpful during the novel coronavirus pandemic.
  • The feature is available to any Google Maps user to use for free.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Google Maps is one of the various tools you should have in your arsenal of anti-coronavirus apps. You might not be driving as much as you were before this modern plague, but Google’s app can still be very helpful. The Maps app now includes COVID-19 warnings when you search for doctors, and it highlights restaurants that deliver — the app can even be used to order food from participating restaurants. On top of that, Google Maps lets business owners update their listings to make sure their customers have the most accurate information about their shops.

These are features that Google added or upgraded in Maps in the past few weeks, but it’s not just Google that’s using Maps to help users during the pandemic. Maps users can create their own custom Google Maps for all sorts of instances, and it turns out that plenty of people have been using this functionality to come up with relevant maps that can help people during the health crisis.

Webcams are finally back in stock on Amazon

%name Webcams are finally back in stock on Amazon by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Nothing on Amazon right now is more popular than face masks, and it just so happens that the site’s best-selling face masks are back in stock right now if you hurry.
  • Coming in at a close second, however, are webcams — and most webcam models have been sold out on Amazon’s site for about a month now.
  • Several webcam models are finally starting to arrive back in stock right now, though prices are still typically elevated since webcams continue to be in such high demand.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Among our readers, there is absolutely no question that face masks make up the top-selling category of product right now — and it just so happens that Amazon’s best-selling face masks are back in stock today, in case you’ve been waiting. It’s pretty easy to understand why they’re so popular since the CDC recommends that people wear this type of face mask for protection anytime they leave their homes. They’re not as effective as medical-grade face masks, of course, but they’re more than good enough to protect you and those around you if you also practice social distancing and good hygiene.

Apart from face masks, the second-most popular type of product people want right now is a webcam. Most nonessential businesses are still closed at this point, and if they’re smart they’ll probably be closed until at least sometime in June. That means you’re in store for a whole lot of video conferencing in the weeks and potentially months to come. Even if you don’t use video for work or school, there’s a good chance you use them to chat with family and friends. Tired of holding up your phone the whole time? Don’t worry, because webcams are finally starting to arrive back in stock at Amazon.

Head over to Amazon’s webcam page to scroll around and check them out, but there are a few in particular that are shipping out soon. While prices aren’t quite as gouged as they have been in recent weeks, you still might have to pay a premium if you want one soon. If your company is covering the cost, that doesn’t matter anyway. If not, it’s up to you to decide how much you need one.

The Logitech C270 Webcam is one of the most popular models out there, which makes sense considering how big Logitech is in this space. This model is ready to ship right now, and there’s also a generic version for much less money if you don’t need a Logi logo.

Logitech C270 Webcam – Black – USB 2.0: $131.99

Webcam with Microphone Desktop or Laptop Webcam, HD 720p Widescreen for Video Calling and Recor…: $79.99

The Yvelines 1080P Webcam is another good option that offers even better 1080p resolution. It’s also less expensive than the two aforementioned webcam models, and it’s ready to ship out in the next few days.

YVELINES 1080P Webcam with Microphone, HD PC Webcam Laptop Plug and Play USB Webcam Streaming C…: $59.99

Finally, the Weicha 1080P HD Webcam is a Full HD model that’s even more affordable than any of the cameras listed above. It’s out of stock right now, but you can still order and it’ll ship as soon as it’s back in a few days.

1080P HD Webcam with Microphone, Webcam for Gaming Conferencing, Laptop or Desktop Webcam, USB…: $49.99

Does time still exist in coronavirus quarantine? Much of the country has been sheltering in place for more than a month now, and the responsible people among us know that we’ve got a long way to go. Some states are already talking about reopening nonessential businesses, which on the surface seems like a fine idea considering much of the economy has ground to a halt. When massive second waves of COVID-19 infections sweep across those states and they’re forced to shut everything down once again for an even longer period of time, they’ll realize the decision was undoubtedly a terrible one.

Most of us will indeed be stuck at home for quite a while to come, which means we have to figure out new ways to keep ourselves occupied. Needless to say, that often involves watching TV or streaming movies and shows on services like Netflix. If you’re wondering which new shows everyone is into right now, look no further because you’ll find the top 10 series people are watching this week right here.
