It’s been five years since we said goodbye to NBC’s beloved mockumentary about a group of supremely likable civil servants from the small, fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana, which, come to think of it, doesn’t sound like a long time ago when you focus only on the number of years that have passed. But the truth of the matter is that Parks and Recreation, which took its bow in 2015, is in every way a throwback — a relic of a pre-Trump era that doesn’t really exist anymore, except in the form of a half-hour TV show that gave us, tucked inside a candy coating of slapstick, comedy, romance, and heart, a one-two combo of a mission statement that sustained the show for seven seasons. That statement is as follows: Government can be a force for good in the world, and that the people who make it so represented a reason to be more hopeful than not about America circa the mid-2010s.

Which is why it might strike you as a little incongruous that on Thursday night, April 30, NBC is broadcasting a quickly assembled Parks and Recreation reunion special. This will be the one-night-only resurrection of a show that once reflected the best about government, at a time when widespread government inaction has exacerbated the deadly coronavirus pandemic that’s now infected more than 1 million Americans, killed more than 58,000 Americans, wrecked economies at the local, state, and federal level, and left millions of people out of work. At a time when TV news is wall-to-wall coronavirus coverage, when the leader of the free world who you’d hope would remind you about the only thing to fear being fear itself instead of making sarcastic comments about injecting yourself with bleach, Parks and Recreation is coming back, one more time, to place the original cast of characters in our current timeline of social distancing.

Moderna, one of the first companies to start clinical trials on humans for a coronavirus vaccine, is looking to move to phase 2.
The mRNA-1273 vaccine candidate will be given to a larger cohort of patients in the second quarter of 2020 if regulators approve the next phase of the trial.
Moderna previously said that the vaccine might be ready for emergency use as soon as this fall.

Well over 70 coronavirus vaccine candidates are in development around the world in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), and several of them have reached the first phase of human testing. Vaccines are supposed to be both effective against COVID-19 infections and safe for those inoculated. That’s why a vaccine can’t be hurried to market, and why conservative estimates sit at 12 to 18 months.

Some of these candidates might be deployed earlier than that, as soon as this fall, assuming regulators allow emergency use for these drugs. One of them is Moderna’s mRNA vaccine that already completed phase 1 of human trials. The company announced it’s ready to move forward with the next step, with stage 2 set to include 600 patients.

Social distancing guidelines to fight the coronavirus pandemic — which has now infected more than 1 million Americans — don’t just apply to people.
The CDC is now recommending that Americans keep their pets at least six feet away from other pets and people when outside.
That’s because there have been a handful of instances the center has now identified of peoples’ pets contracting the COVID-19 coronavirus.

One of the reasons the coronavirus pandemic has sparked such a dramatic response around the globe has to do with the comprehensive spread of the virus — the way it doesn’t limit itself to borders, genders, ages, or races. At this point, according to the latest numbers from Johns Hopkins University, more than 1 million people in the US (and almost 3.1 million around the world), have been infected with the COVID-19 virus.

“People” being the operative word. Because that number also doesn’t account for the fact that your pet dog or cat can likewise contract the virus, with the first instances of that happening now having been recorded in the US. In fact, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now saying that we need to apply the social distancing rules that have governed our lives for more than a month now to our pets, also.

SpaceX has a new plan for minimizing the visibility of its Starlink satellites from Earth.
The company will use shaded “visors” to mitigate the reflection of sunlight off the satellites.
Astronomers have voiced their concerns over the Starlink program, stating that the satellites interfere with their observations of space.

It’s no secret that SpaceX is going to have to send a whole bunch of its Starlink satellites into space if it wants to develop the futuristic worldwide high-speed data network it has in mind. Unfortunately, astronomers have been rather outspoken regarding how easily visible the tiny satellites are, and how they can potentially interfere with observations of space from the ground.

SpaceX has been receptive of these criticisms to a certain degree, with head man Elon Musk stating that it might be possible to paint the satellites in a shade of flat black to make them less visible when gazing skyward. However, the company appears to have come up with an entirely new solution in the form of “shades” that will ideally prevent the satellites from reflecting sunlight.

Social distancing guidelines and stay-at-home directives have helped prevent the coronavirus from spreading aggressively.
More rigid social distancing measures, however, may be necessary to truly see a permanent decline in the number of coronavirus cases.
The total number of coronavirus cases in the United States has now passed 1 million.

While stay-at-home directives and social distancing guidelines have helped many states prevent the coronavirus from spreading more aggressively, the constant isolation is starting to get to some people. In some states, many people have started congregating in large groups with absolutely no regard for social distancing guidelines. In Chicago alone, this past weekend saw reports of massive house parties and even an outdoor wedding that attracted dozens of guests.

To a certain extent, this is to be expected. Especially with the coronavirus peaking in some large U.S. cities, some people now believe it’s safe to go back outside and hang out with friends. And while doing so may be slightly safer than it was a few weeks ago, the reality is that a second wave of the coronavirus is possible and may prove to be more deadly than the first.

The film industry, like many other industries, has been hit hard by the novel coronavirus pandemic. Theaters around the world have been forced to close due to social distancing guidelines, and production on virtually every movie and TV show currently in development has been halted. As difficult of a transition as it has been, the pandemic has also forced studios to think on their feet, and it has been fascinating to watch them adapt on the fly.

Just this week, The Wall Street Journal reported that Trolls World Tour — which was released digitally on the same day that it was originally set to arrive in theaters — has made over $100 million. In three weeks, the animated sequel has already generated more revenue than the original did during its five-month theatrical run.

Resourcefulness like this is going to be necessary in the coming months, and to that point, YouTube will be hosting a virtual film festival this summer in coordination with some of the world’s biggest festivals.

The coronavirus pandemic is still spreading throughout the US, with the latest numbers from Johns Hopkins University showing that more than 1 million people in the US have now been infected by the virus.
Nevertheless, some companies and locales around the US are starting to plan incremental reopenings, including Simon Property Group. That’s the biggest mall owner in the US, and its properties also house Apple stores.
As early as this weekend, the first Simon malls and Apple stores may reopen in the US.

Simon Property Group is the biggest mall owner in the US and garnered a wave of news headlines on Tuesday for its plan to start reopening some of its malls around the country as soon as this weekend.

That’s according to an internal memo about the company’s internal reopening timetable, which was obtained by CNBC and encompasses 49 malls in 10 states. Those first malls would adhere to a limited schedule once they’ve opened back up, which the memo notes is planned to start on May 1 — but what’s also interesting is what this means for retailers that operate stores inside those mall properties, like Apple. Deidre O’Brien, the iPhone maker’s senior vice president of retail, has already told employees, according to one report, that many Apple Stores will start reopening in May, and if the Simon news is any guide, this is also an indication of which Apple Stores will be the first to open back up.

Dr. Anthony Fauci says America “could be in for a bad fall” if coronavirus treatments don’t work.
Several drugs and therapies are currently in clinical trials, with some of them showing promise against COVID-19. More research is required, however.
Many vaccines are also in the works, but they will not be ready for mass inoculation until next year.

The novel coronavirus has no treatment, but doctors around the world have been testing all sorts of drugs to kill the virus. It would be enough for just one to be effective against the virus to tide us over until a vaccine arrives. If a drug can stop the virus from replicating or reduce the immune response and the complications that arise from COVID-19, the disease would be much easier to manage, especially in severe cases.

However, the clinical trials aren’t done yet, and some have provided results that aren’t too reassuring. If researchers don’t find an effective treatment soon, the US “could be in for a bad fall,” according to Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Apple opened up a web portal for hospitals and labs to submit information about COVID-19 testing locations earlier this month.
On Tuesday, COVID-19 testing locations began appearing on Apple Maps in the US.
Some locations are providing COVID-19 diagnostic tests as well as antibody tests.

There are countless hurdles we’ll need to overcome before we can expect life to return to normal, and one of them is testing as many people as we possibly can. The more people who are tested, the more data we have, and those who test positive can self-isolate to ensure that they don’t infect anyone else. And while we may never scale up to test as many Americans as we should be testing on a daily basis, the capacity has been expanding rapidly.

But despite the flood of testing in the US in recent days, knowing whether or not you should be tested and where you should go to get tested is still disappointingly nebulous, and will probably change depending on who you call. There is good news, though. As of Tuesday afternoon, COVID-19 testing locations are being displayed on Apple Maps, which should take some of the guesswork out of the operation for those who need to get tested.
