  • With Apple’s iPhone 12 release likely now less than 5 months away, more and more details surrounding the next-generation iPhone models are being revealed.
  • The new iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro models will pack plenty of new features, but the biggest news is the fact that they’ll include the first major iPhone redesign since 2017.
  • New renders created by the most talented graphic designer we know give us what is undoubtedly the most realistic look yet at Apple’s upcoming new iPhone 12 Pro design.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

At this point, it seems like we know just about everything there is to know about Apple’s upcoming new iPhone 12 lineup. In fact, the only important detail we don’t know for certain is whether or not the new iPhone 12 series and iPhone 12 Pro series will be released on schedule on September 25th. We don’t know because Apple doesn’t know, at least not with any certainty. The novel coronavirus pandemic is having an ongoing impact on manufacturing in China and on the economy here in the United States, and the situation is fluid so things are changing constantly. We all know a second wave is inevitable, but it could be even more serious than the initial wave if countries with severe hot zones begin to reopen businesses and ease restrictions sooner than they should. You know, like what Trump is trying to do here in the US.

Details surrounding the new iPhone 12 series have been leaking since last year though, even before the iPhone 11 series was released. TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo always does the bulk of the leaking when it comes to Apple devices, and he has been particularly prolific when it comes to the iPhone 12. Reading about something is one thing though, and seeing it take shape is another. Now, we’ve been given our best and most realistic look yet at Apple’s upcoming iPhone 12 Pro design.

Amazon has the best Nest thermostat deals of 2020

%name Amazon has the best Nest thermostat deals of 2020 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Smart thermostats like the Nest Thermostat E and Nest Learning Thermostat are widely accepted as no-brainer purchases since they pay for themselves by significantly reducing your energy bill each month.
  • With that in mind, a Nest thermostat is a great value even at full retail since you’ll end up saving money in the long run.
  • Of course, taking advantage of a good deal means your smart thermostat will pay for itself even faster, and Amazon is currently offering the lowest prices of the year on both popular Nest models.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

We’ve told our readers this countless times in the past, but there’s no way to overemphasize this point: you need a smart thermostat. Not “you should get” a smart thermostat or “you might want to consider” a smart thermostat… you need one, and it’s just plain crazy not to have one. Forget all the convenient smart features and the nifty design, the bottom line is that smart thermostats save you money by cutting down your energy bills using smart scheduling and other intelligent features. Everyone wants to save money, and you can get started with two great deals on Amazon today that slash Nest thermostats to their best prices of 2020.

Starting with the more affordable model, the Nest Thermostat E is probably the single best smart thermostat model out there. It packs all the same features as the pricier smart thermostat from Nest, but it doesn’t have a stainless steel case or an OLED display. Those are both nifty features, but they’re also purely aesthetic. The Nest Thermostat E still has a beautiful design with a frosted glass display, and it pays for itself in a matter of months thanks to all the money you’ll save on your energy bills.

Google, T4000ES, Nest Thermostat E, Smart Thermostat, White: $139.00

Just look at all the great 5-star reviews on Amazon. “I installed myself in about 15 minutes and I am not a handyman. The app is easy to use and set schedules. I saved over $30 on our utility bill the first month we had it,” one reviewer said. “This is the third one that I have owned. I would not live without it. They are absolutely great, fast service if you need to talk to a trouble technician oh, they do what they are supposed to do,” boasted another. Everyone loves this awesome model, and it’s on sale right now at its lowest price in months on Amazon.

Of course, the Nest Learning Thermostat is a bit more expensive than the entry-level Nest model, but it still pays for itself in savings. It might just take a little longer to pay for itself, is all. If you pick one up now on Amazon, however, it’ll take much less time than it normally does because it’s currently discounted in all four available colors. And lucky for you, the most popular color option — silver stainless steel — is also the one with the biggest discount!

Google, T3007ES, Nest Learning Thermostat, 3rd Gen, Smart Thermostat, Stainless Steel, Works Wi…: $199.00

You really can’t go wrong with either model. You’ll save money which is great for your wallet, and you’ll conserve energy which is great for the environment. Plus, on top of all the smart scheduling features, you can also use the Nest app on your phone to control your smart thermostats or even control them with Alexa voice commands.

iPhone 12 mass production reportedly delayed by a month

%name iPhone 12 mass production reportedly delayed by a month by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple has delayed mass production of the iPhone 12 by a month due to the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic.
  • All four iPhone 12 models — 5.4-inch, two 6.1-inch, 6.7-inch — are still expected to release this year, but the supply might be more constrained than usual.
  • Apple is also concerned about consumer demand due to the global economic downturn.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Over the past several weeks, we’ve seen reports about the shifting release date of the iPhone 12 on an almost daily basis. One day the next flagship iPhone is on track and ready to roll out on time this fall, and the next, it’s not clear if the iPhone 12 will even ship to consumers before the end of the year. Apple, unsurprisingly, has been as tight-lipped as ever about its plans, but according to a report from The Wall Street Journal, the production timeline for the 2020 iPhone lineup is being pushed back due to the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic.

As the report explains, Apple typically ramps up mass production of its flagship phone models in the early summer to prepare for the launch and subsequent release in mid-September. Sources say that while Apple will still build phones starting in the summer months, mass production “will slide back by about a month.”

  • Amazon is offering nearly a dozen different deals on products that span all of the company’s top-selling Amazon device categories.
  • From the Fire TV Stick 4K at its lowest price ever to a crazy Fire HD 8 Tablet deal you have to see to believe, there’s something for everyone in this big Amazon sale.
  • You can also pick up a wildly popular Echo Dot for a few dollars more than it cost on Black Friday, and you can save 20% when you buy two Kindle devices.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Our readers have been going crazy all week long for Amazon’s deals on Apple’s true wireless earbuds, which is totally understandable since AirPods 2 with Wireless Charging Case are down to a new all-time low of $149.98 and AirPods Pro happen to be on sale at Black Friday’s all-time low price. Those deals are fantastic indeed, but there’s another batch of bargains we need to tell you about before they disappear.

Amazon may have shifted much of its focus away from shipping nonessential products so that it can ship more medical supplies to hospitals and state governments. It may have also hidden its deals page temporarily, though we already told you the trick to finding it. None of that can stop Amazon from offering fantastic deals on its own Amazon devices though, and there are a whopping 10 different device deals that we need to tell you about right now.

First up, we have what is undoubtedly the most unbelievable Amazon tablet deal of all time. The Certified Refurbished Fire HD 8 Tablet with a Show Mode Charging Dock Bundle gets you a renewed 32GB Fire HD 8 Tablet ($110 new) and a Show Mode Charging Dock ($40) for just $69.99 total!

Up next, Amazon’s wildly popular Fire TV Stick 4K is on sale at its lowest price ever with coupon code 4KFIRETV, but there’s a catch: this deal is only available to select customers. You can learn more here, but the gist of it is you’ll only find out if the coupon works for you by trying it. If it doesn’t work, there’s thankfully a second sale that anyone can take advantage of: Purchase two Fire TV Stick 4K players and you’ll get a $20 Amazon credit when you activate them.

Sticking with the Fire TV theme for a bit longer, you’ll find the Fire TV Cube that normally costs $120 on sale for $99.99 when you pick up a Certified Refurbished model. We’ll remind you that certified refurbs are guaranteed to look and function like new, and they come with the same warranty that the new version comes with. If you would rather have Amazon’s Fire TV software baked right into your television, you’ll find the best-selling Toshiba 43-inch 4K Fire TV Edition Smart TV on sale for $249.99, a huge $80 discount compared to the normal $330 price tag.

If you’re looking for a new Alexa smart speaker, today is definitely the day to pull the trigger. The new and improved Echo is down to an all-time low of $59.99 instead of $100, and Echo Dots are on sale for just a few dollars more than they cost last year during Black Friday and Cyber Week. The Echo Dot with Clock is also $20 off right now, and Amazon’s awesome $130 Echo Show 8 is on sale for $99.99.

Where to buy face masks online for coronavirus

%name Where to buy face masks online for coronavirus by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Everyone is being advised to wear face masks anytime they leave the house, and Amazon’s best-selling face masks are by far the most popular option.
  • There are plenty of other places to buy face masks right now, and you can do so in good conscience knowing that you’re not taking medical-grade face masks away from doctors, nurses, and other people on the front lines of the war against the novel coronavirus.
  • Here, we run through five of the best places to buy face masks online right now.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

For the time being, the CDC recommends that all members of the public in the United States should wear a protective face mask when leaving the house. Now, before you rush out and spend $20 or more on a single N95 respirator mask that can’t even be reused, you should be aware that the CDC is NOT recommending that people wear medical-grade masks. There is still a massive shortage of face masks in hospitals and other healthcare facilities across the country, and you should not reward unscrupulous sellers who are selling precious N95 and surgical masks to the public.

The simple fact of the matter is you don’t need a medical-grade face mask to protect yourself because you don’t spend hours at a time treating coronavirus patients like doctors and nurses do. You’re smart, so when you go out you always make sure to practice social distancing and good hygiene. For those reasons, there is a wide range of face masks that will provide you with more than enough protection while shopping in a supermarket or making other quick essential runs out of your home.

The favorite options right now among our readers are the Jointown Safe Shield Face Mask, which costs just $0.78 each, and the LeadPro 3-Layer Face Mask, which is just $0.80. Boxes of 50 are in stock and ready to ship right now at Amazon from both brands, and they happen to be the best-selling face masks on the retailer’s entire site. If you’re handy, you can also make your own DIY coronavirus face masks quickly and easily using materials you already have lying around your home. If you’d rather just buy face masks and you want some options aside from the best-sellers we just told you about, you’ll find five great places to buy face masks listed below.

Face Mask, Pack of 50: $39.99

Face Mask, Pack of 50: $38.99

Amazon

Head over to this face mask page on Amazon’s site and you’ll find a wide range of face masks that are available right now, including the best-sellers we mentioned above. There’s a good mix of 3-layer masks and various types of cloth face masks, and several of the most popular options are ready to ship soon and will be delivered within a week.

Face Masks and Protective Face Covers: $8.99+

Amazon Handmade

Did you know Amazon has a whole like Etsy that’s full of handmade products? There are tons of handmade face masks available right now over at Amazon and you’ll be surprised at how affordable some of the options are.

Handmade Face Masks: $10.00+

Sun Lovin’ Roots

While Sun Lovin’ Roots is best known for its women’s wear, the store has pivoted a large portion of its business to protective face masks. You’ll find a very wide range of styles and prints, and the store donates one mask for every three purchased.

Sun Lovin’ Roots Face Masks: $18.00

Arm the Animals

Arm the Animals is another brand that doesn’t normally make face masks, but it’s making plenty of them right now. The shop will also donate one face mask to California hospitals for every mask purchased.

Arm the Animals Face Masks: $18.99

Swaddle Designs

Last but not least, Swaddle Designs has shifted some of its manufacturing capacity away from baby products so it can offer face masks. The company’s masks fit very well and they’re made of comfortable material that contours to the face.

Swaddle Designs Face Masks: $9.99+

A common heartburn medicine might work against coronavirus

%name A common heartburn medicine might work against coronavirus by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Doctors in New York are looking at a drug that usually treats heartburn for COVID-19 therapy.
  • The novel coronavirus might respond to famotidine, an affordable medicine for heartburn.
  • A computer model also identified famotidine as a potential medicine that could stop viral replication.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The novel coronavirus has been quite a challenge for doctors looking to find therapies that could stop the virus from replicating and thus reduce complications that can lead to death. Several drugs that have been designed and approved to treat other ailments may work in COVID-19 therapies, and some of these candidates are quite popular after having been mentioned in White House press briefings. Hydroxychloroquine and remdesivir are probably the most well-known COVID-19 drugs that are in trials right now, although not all results are promising. But researchers are also trying out other drugs that may have a positive effect on COVID-19 patients, including a cheap drug that’s used to treat heartburn.

Apple and Google’s coronavirus contact tracing app scores big win in Europe

%name Apple and Google’s coronavirus contact tracing app scores big win in Europe by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Apple and Google have made several improvements to their coronavirus contact tracing app that will be available on iPhone and Android in various countries.
  • The “exposure notification” app now has new features that protect user privacy even better than initial measures. Similarly, the app has new provisions meant to reduce the number of false positives.
  • Germany has agreed to use the Apple-Google decentralized contact tracing app, while France and the UK still want to collect more data from phones.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Apple and Google developed a new API for iPhone and Android that would allow app developers to create contact tracing apps for the novel coronavirus. The Apple-Google approach relies on Bluetooth connectivity between devices to determine the risk of exposure of an individual to a person who tested positive to COVID-19. The object of such apps is for medical systems to be able to perform quick contact tracing and react accordingly. Patients can be isolated earlier and tested for COVID-19 with the help of such apps. But, crucially, participation is voluntary. It’s up to iPhone and Android users to opt-in. When they do, their privacy will be protected, and neither Apple nor Google will collect any data about users. It’ll all stay on their phones.

Several governments in Europe have been working on their own contact tracing app as well, some starting similar initiatives before Apple and Google announced their joint effort. But not all countries went for a privacy-friendly approach. The UK, France, and Germany all wanted Apple and Google to make certain exceptions that would allow these governments to run their own contact tracing app, and collect more user data. Germany announced over the weekend that it’ll drop its requests and instead follow Apple and Google’s guidelines, just as the two tech giants announced new changes for the app that will improve user privacy.

Coronavirus can apparently live for days in your eye

%name Coronavirus can apparently live for days in your eye by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • New findings from one of the earliest coronavirus patients in Italy suggest that traces of the virus can live in the eye for some 20 days.
  • This reinforces the conventional wisdom, that one of the few methods of preventing the virus we have right now are the tried-and-true methods of washing your hands and avoiding touching your face.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

By now, it should be pretty widely known that washing your hands thoroughly and often, along with not touching your face, are some of the strongest tools in our arsenal right now in terms of limiting the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. But for those of you who still aren’t paying sufficient heed to those best practices, perhaps this will wake you up in a hurry — the fact that a coronavirus patient in Italy has been found to have the virus living in her eye long after it had left her nose.

That’s according to researchers writing about the case of the 65-year-old woman who was Italy’s first confirmed coronavirus case in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine. In this case, the woman was exhibiting signs of conjunctivitis after being admitted to a hospital in January. A few days later, an eye swab found traces of the virus, and for the duration of her stay she submitted to additional eye swabs which showed the virus replicating, implying that the traces from her eye could be contagious.

New idea to speed up coronavirus vaccine research is bold but dangerous

%name New idea to speed up coronavirus vaccine research is bold but dangerous by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Coronavirus vaccine research is advancing at a fast pace, but that might not be enough for some lawmakers and scientists.
  • There’s increasing support for a different type of COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial, one that involves purposely infecting young, healthy volunteers with the novel virus after vaccine inoculations.
  • Challenge trials are risky for diseases that have no cure like COVID-19, as there’s no guarantee the young patients will survive the infection.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

A vaccine for the novel coronavirus will be the kind of drug that can help eradicate the virus for good. A vaccine would prevent infection and the more people get it, the less likely it is for the virus to spread. The good news is that some 77 vaccines are already in testing, including six that have reached at least phase I of human trials. Also good is the fact that the virus isn’t showing significant mutations that would hinder vaccine efficacy. However, the first COVID-19 vaccines won’t be ready for mass inoculations for up to 18 months. Some of them could be deployed as soon as this fall, but only specific categories of patients will be allowed to get one, including healthcare workers who constantly exposed to the virus.

The vaccines can’t come sooner than that because authorities need to make sure they’re safe, not just effective against the vaccine. The last thing we need to treat COVID-19 is a vaccine that can cause unexpected side-effects. You’d never hear the end of it from anti-vaxxers, not to mention that such an event might delay other vaccine work. But there is an idea to speed up coronavirus research that’s both bold and dangerous.

On the first day of every month, Netflix rolls out dozens of movies, TV shows, and specials — most of them being licensed content as opposed to originals. But it’s a pretty interesting mix on May 1st, with movies like Back to the Future and Willy Wonka mixed in with a new limited series from Ryan Murphy and a few original films as well.
