  • A couple sailing the Atlantic had no clue the coronavirus pandemic was sweeping the globe.
  • It wasn’t until the couple tried to dock at an island and were turned away that they realized something was up.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

I remember a few years ago I came up with what I thought was an original premise for a TV show or a movie. As I imagined it, a full-on nuclear world war breaks out and decimates the planet. Meanwhile, airplanes that happened to be in the air at the time ultimately land and the passengers find themselves returning to a world that is not the same as they left it. But as it turns out, there was already a Stephen King book that essentially covered that exact same plot.

What’s wild, though, is that the storyline above — in a general sense — actually played out recently in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. As initially reported by the BBC, a couple from the UK were busy sailing across the Atlantic over the past few weeks and were completely oblivious to what was happening across the world.

  • At this point, millions of Americans have started receiving their IRS stimulus payments as the coronavirus pandemic continues to exact a catastrophic economic toll on the US.
  • Many more millions of Americans, however, are still waiting and constantly checking the IRS website for their stimulus check status. If you’re among those wondering ‘where’s my stimulus money,’ a new update from the IRS provides insight into how much cash it’s distributed so far – and how much is left to come.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

As of Friday, April 24, the IRS has issued 88.1 million stimulus checks to taxpayers, with the average check amount totaling $1,791.

That’s according to new data released from the tax agency, which came the same week that the IRS began issuing paper checks via the mail after a few weeks of sending out stimulus payments electronically, via direct deposit. The data also reflects that the IRS has paid out more than $157 billion so far as a direct disbursement to Americans, which generally comes in the form of up to $1,200 to individuals and $2,400 to married couples (that $1,791 average above also includes the fact that parents can get an extra $500 per child, and individuals and married couples above a certain income threshold can still qualify for an amount below the max amount).

Do mosquitos transmit coronavirus?

%name Do mosquitos transmit coronavirus? by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Mosquitos are known to carry a variety of microorganisms capable of causing disease, but is coronavirus one of them?
  • At the moment, the CDC and the World Health Organization don’t believe mosquitoes pose a threat.
  • The novel coronavirus is transmitted primarily through the air, and there are no known cases of mosquito-borne coronavirus infections at this time.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The novel coronavirus pandemic is still an incredibly serious problem for, well, just about every country on the planet. Even areas where new cases are beginning to wane, the risk of a new wave of outbreaks remains present. With that in mind, and as we inch toward warmer summer months, it’s worth considering whether mosquitos are capable of carrying and transmitting the virus from one person to another.

Elizabeth McGraw, Director of the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics and professor at Penn State University, tackles that question in a new video where she explains the likelihood of COVID-19 being carried by mosquitos.

Everything we know about Italy’s horrific coronavirus outbreak might’ve just changed

%name Everything we know about Italy’s horrific coronavirus outbreak might’ve just changed by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • New research from Italy says the first local coronavirus cases may have appeared as early as a month before people were diagnosed COVID-19 positive.
  • Italy’s first COVID-19 cases were two Chinese citizens who were tested in Rome on January 31st. Three weeks later, the first Italian cases tested positive in Lombardia.
  • Scientists believe the disease may have been spreading quietly in Italy throughout January and may have been brought by groups of people who didn’t necessarily come from China.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The first novel coronavirus cases were registered in Italy on January 31st, some 86 days ago. By the end of February, nearly 900 people were diagnosed (21 deaths), and then the number of infections skyrocketed. More than 105,000 had the disease as of March 31st (12,303 deaths), and now the count is at nearly 193,000 (25,969 deaths). For quite a while, Italy was the world’s second-largest COVID-19 epicenter after the Wuhan region where it all started — then Spain and the US surpassed Italy’s caseload. As it turns out, the local epidemic may have began much earlier than January 31st, according to a new study that looked at the spread of the disease in the country.

  • Avengers: Endgame was first released a year ago today, on April 26th, 2019, generating a ton of positive reviews and shattering records at the box office.
  • The climactic end of a storyline that spanned 22 movies spread over nearly a decade delivered plenty of satisfying scenes and Easter eggs.
  • Audiences around the world cheered, laughed, and cried during the three-hour Endgame marathon, and some of these reactions went viral online.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The blockbuster that would turn out to become the highest-grossing film in history premiered precisely one year ago today. Well, April 26th was the Avengers: Endgame’s official launch date, but the film was actually released in some regions as early as two days before that. The film opened on Wednesday or Thursday in certain markets, and theaters were packed for days. This was the Marvel film to watch, the movie that needed a decade of intertwined stories to be made possible. There’s no question that Endgame would have been a fantastic experience for anyone, regardless of whether they saw any of the previous 21 films. But the more familiar you were with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the more enjoyable Endgame would turn out to be. And the more likely you were to cheer loudly or cry.

Almost a year later, reaction videos to some of the most epic Endgame scenes started going viral again on social media as fans relived the experience of watching the film in theaters for the first time. Now, the movie’s one-year anniversary is the perfect opportunity to enjoy those reactions again.
