Spotify is setting its sights on your car as the target for the music streaming giant’s first hardware device.

The Financial Times, citing anonymous sources, is reporting that the company wants to do an end run around the in-car software from Apple and Google that are making serious in-roads into the space. The CarPlay and Android Auto software platforms from both companies are increasingly found in newer cars, and Spotify certainly supports those, but the company also wants to start retailing a purpose-built, in-car music player of its own.

Verizon is giving subscribers free robocall and spam protection tools

%name Verizon is giving subscribers free robocall and spam protection tools by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

In an effort to curb the recent epidemic of spam and robocalls, Verizon announced this week that it will be giving all of its customers free access to protection tools (which were previously behind a paywall) starting this March.

As Joe Russo, senior vice president of network operations, explains, Verizon added call and spam screening to the Call Filter service at no additional charge for wireless customers over a year ago. This alerted customers to potential spam calls before they answered. Customers on some Android phones also had the ability to receive free alerts when a call was detected as possibly being spam. Wireline customers with Caller ID received Spam Alerts too.

Netflix says that ‘Fortnite’ is a bigger threat to its business than HBO

%name Netflix says that ‘Fortnite’ is a bigger threat to its business than HBO by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

In what is both a fascinating revelation and a vicious shot at one of its main rivals, Netflix said in a shareholder letter on Thursday that, in terms of screen time, Fortnite is a more pressing concern for the company’s business than HBO. While it might not be a one-to-one comparison, we do know that tens of millions of people (of all ages) are spending hours a day playing Fortnite on their phones, tablets, consoles, and computers.

More important than any other metric to Netflix is the amount of time consumers spend streaming its content, which makes a massively popular game like Fortnite just as threatening, if not more so, than any direct competitor, including HBO, Hulu, Showtime, or upcoming services from the likes of Disney and Apple.

Think iPhones are expensive? Samsung official says foldable Galaxy phone will cost twice as much

%name Think iPhones are expensive? Samsung official says foldable Galaxy phone will cost twice as much by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Samsung is expected to unveil its first ever foldable Galaxy phone soon… for real this time. Samsung will give the phone a proper announcement this time around, and it’ll reveal all the details that it withheld from the press during its developer conference in early November, including an actual release date and pricing. The Galaxy F, or whatever Samsung ends up calling it, will be announced on February 20th, during Samsung’s San Francisco media event. Previous reports already said as much, but a Samsung exec confirmed it to Korean media, tackling the matter of pricing in the process.

Microsoft tells last remaining mobile customers to switch to iPhone or Android

%name Microsoft tells last remaining mobile customers to switch to iPhone or Android by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Is it a brave thing to accept the reality of your own limitations when you’ve tried for years and sunk significant resources into trying to surpass them? Maybe. But it’s not so much that Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has necessarily demonstrated bravery by finally, after all this time, admitting that Cortana will never best Amazon’s Alexa or Google Assistant in the digital assistant wars as he admitted during a media event in recent days at Microsoft’s Redmond campus. Or by Microsoft finally sunsetting Windows 10 Mobile for good and even going so far as to nudge its users into shifting to iOS or Android instead.

Even the winners in technology only get so far by looking at the world through tech’s famed reality-distortion field, while for everyone else — well, a little bit of refreshing honesty never hurt anyone, especially in an industry built on the hubris and network effects that leave room for only a few top dogs.
