  • Scientists have gotten a special species of coral to reproduce in an aquarium for the first time ever.
  • The coral will eventually be used to restore areas of the barrier reef off the coast of Florida which has been ravaged by disease.
  • Coral reefs around the world are struggling, and scientists are racing against time to rescue them before it’s too late.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The world’s coral reefs are struggling. Warming ocean waters and pollution have led to mass die-offs of coral in many places around the planet. The only barrier reef in the United States sits off the coast of Florida, and it’s been dealing with its own set of problems, including the spread of coral-killing disease that has devastated portions of the reef.

Now, for the first time ever, a species of coral recovered from the reef has been grown by humans in an aquarium. Ridged cactus coral at the Florida Aquarium reproduced in an artificial setting, offering hope that scientists may be able to rescue areas of the reef that have been hit hard by the disease.

Fever from coronavirus infection can last for well over a week

%name Fever from coronavirus infection can last for well over a week by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Fever following a viral infection can last for several days, and novel coronavirus infections are no exception.
  • A small study from China says the fever lasts an average of eight to 11 days.
  • CDC guidelines say it’s safe to leave isolation if you’re treating COVID-19 at home after 72 hours of regular temperature readings without the use of a fever reducer.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Many coronavirus patients are asymptomatic. That means they can still spread the disease to others even if they’re not showing any of the COVID-19 symptoms. Fever, cough, and fatigue are all symptoms that could point to an infection with the novel coronavirus, but they can also be indicative of a different viral infection.

Only a COVID-19 test will tell you whether you have the disease or whether it’s just the flu. But once your COVID-19 diagnosis has been confirmed, you can expect several days of fever after the onset of symptoms.

Google Search can now help streaming TV fans decide what to watch next

%name Google Search can now help streaming TV fans decide what to watch next by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • All of us are streaming TV and movies more than ever these days, thanks to coronavirus quarantines that mean everyone is staying at home and hunkering down there as much as possible as the virus continues to spread outside.
  • Google Search has launched a tool, announced on Wednesday, that lets streaming TV and movie fans build a watchlist to keep track of shows they live and are interested in — in addition to offering data that can help those users figure out what to watch next on streamers including Netflix, Amazon, and Disney+, among others.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

For those of who have become pretty reliant on Google services – which include best-in-class Search, Mail, and Maps products, among other offerings from the search giant – Google has just added one more tool to make its services even more indispensable to loyalists like me. Particularly, those of us who keep an ongoing, stacked watchlist of shows and movies to stream, which our long coronavirus quarantines have only helped get longer and longer.

If you’re like me, keeping track of all your favorite shows across all the streaming services you’re signed up for, and not to mention all the shows you haven’t watched yet but are intrigued enough to want to check out — it’s almost a full-time job, it feels like. Add on top of that the constant churn that all the services experience from month to month, with shows and movies constantly rolling on and off, and it’s a near-impossible task unless you’ve got a ridiculous amount of time and energy to devote to it. I’m definitely in this category, and while I don’t mind spending a fair amount of time keeping track of the shows I love the most, I’m glad to know that Google has built a TV and movie tracker inside of Google Search that makes this task a lot easier.

‘The Mandalorian’ season 3 is coming to Disney+

%name ‘The Mandalorian’ season 3 is coming to Disney+ by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The Mandalorian season 3 is already in the works for Disney+, months before season 2 debuts.
  • The Mandalorian series creator Jon Favreau has reportedly been writing the new season “for a while.”
  • Season 2 of The Mandalorian wrapped production in March, shortly before the coronavirus forced US states to issue shelter-at-home orders, cutting off work on many shows and movies.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

These days, it’s nearly impossible to go online without being inundated with bad news, which is why we’ll take every positive development we can get, no matter how minor. This might not be so minor for some fans, though, as Variety reports that pre-production has already begun on the third season of The Mandalorian. Yes, you read that correctly. Season 3 is in the works even though we’re still months out from the debut of season 2.

Sources close to the production of the Disney+ Star Wars spinoff show say that series creator Jon Favreau has been “writing season 3 for a while,” and that the art department, led by Lucasfilm VP and executive creative director Doug Chiang, has been working on concepts for the third season “for the past few weeks.”

Some coronavirus patients may experience serious neurological complications

%name Some coronavirus patients may experience serious neurological complications by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Neurological symptoms have been observed in patients who did not show other signs of the novel coronavirus, a recent study revealed.
  • New research shows that patients who are admitted to the hospital for treatment can develop a neurological complication called the Guillain-Barré syndrome.
  • The neurological condition can develop after other viral infections and has various signs, including weakness in the limbs, lack of reflexes, tingling, and even paralysis.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Aside from the coronavirus symptoms that are commonly cited, such as fever, coughing, and fatigue, there are plenty of other clinical manifestations of COVID-19. Some doctors who thought they were treating patients suffering from a neurological disease discovered that the neurological sings they were witnessing were caused by COVID-19 infection. Some people experienced pronounced confusion, while others displayed seizure-like movements, all indicative of a neurological issue.

Those findings were translated into new protocols, and doctors were trained to expect these unusual symptoms in COVID-19 patients, including the ones who lacked more common symptoms of the novel coronavirus disease. It turns out the neurological ailments do not stop there, and some of the infected patients might exhibit an entirely different condition that could end up being life-threatening.

The Mars 2020 team has to launch a Mars rover while working from hom

  • NASA’s Mars 2020 mission is still on schedule thanks to the tireless efforts of staff members that are working from home.
  • The mission is scheduled to launch by August 5th, but if it misses its window, NASA will have to wait until 2022 for another launch attempt.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

When the novel coronavirus pandemic began impacting businesses and organizations in the United States, the scientific community couldn’t help but wonder how long it would take for NASA to be affected and how dramatic the impact might be. Once one NASA employee came down with COVID-19, NASA began to roll out its work-from-home orders and eventually ordered all staff to work from home unless they were considered “mission-critical.”

In a new blog post on NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory blog, we get a glimpse at the people behind the Mars 2020 mission in their “new” workspaces. As the agency explains, the missions tight timeline means that there’s no opportunity for downtime, and working from home really is work for the bright minds that NASA assembled.

Report: Chinese agents helped spread rumors about virus lockdowns in the US

%name Report: Chinese agents helped spread rumors about virus lockdowns in the US by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Coronavirus hoaxes and myths started circulating pretty quickly last month when the outbreak first exploded in a major way here — one of the hoaxes being a rumor that President Trump was about to institute a dramatic lockdown of the US.
  • Those rumors circulated across social media and tended to be attributed to someone who knows someone who works at a federal agency.
  • However, a new report from The New York Times claims this was the work of Chinese operatives.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Some of you might recall getting panicked texts from friends last month or seeing social media posts that seemed to herald an imminent national lockdown of the US on orders from President Trump. The source was always kind of a vague “my friend who has a cousin who works for Homeland Security” situation.

“They will announce this as soon as they have troops in place to help prevent looters and rioters,” reads one such message, which you can still find with a Twitter search. “… he said he got the call last night and was told to pack and be prepared for the call today with his dispatch orders. He thinks they will announce before the end of the weekend.” I got one such text myself along these lines from a friend who shall remain nameless, but these rumors — some of which took on an ominous and draconian tone, such as that travel between states was about to be banned — spread so much that federal officials took the extraordinary step of trying to debunk them.

And now a new detail about their provenance has been revealed. It turns out that it was Chinese agents who helped fan the online flames of these coronavirus lockdown hoaxes in the United States.

Google Meet finally copied Zoom’s best feature

%name Google Meet finally copied Zoom’s best feature by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Google announced four new features rolling out for Google Meet on Tuesday.
  • Google Meet now supports up to 16 people on tiled view, where it previously only supported 4.
  • Google is also adding low-light mode, noise cancellation, and the ability to share a Chrome tab.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Zoom’s video conferencing software has been making headlines for weeks. Two months ago, most people had never heard of Zoom, and now it’s being used as a verb in casual conversation. One of the reasons Zoom has had such an outsized impact is that most other video chat applications can’t match Zoom’s approachability and range of features. For millions of users, the benefits of using Zoom outweigh the potential privacy concerns endemic to the platform (some of which have been addressed). But Google isn’t going down without a fight.

Here’s how fatal coronavirus cases evolve from minor to devastating

%name Here’s how fatal coronavirus cases evolve from minor to devastating by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Doctors are fighting a battle against the novel coronavirus in the lungs, brain, kidneys, and heart.
  • Questions remain regarding how the virus affects different organs and why some patients fare worse than others.
  • The virus’s effects on the blood, including clotting, may be to blame for the most severe damage.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The novel coronavirus produces a number of symptoms in patients who come down with an infection. They range from minor (low-grade fever, fatigue, cough) to incredibly severe (labored breathing, low blood oxygen levels, low-functioning kidneys), but they don’t all appear at once.

In a new article in Science, input from doctors on the front lines of the battle against COVID-19 reveals how the disease evolves from trivial discomfort to life-threatening organ failure in individuals who ultimately succumb to the worst the virus can muster.

iPhone 12 release may be pushed back to October or November

%name iPhone 12 release may be pushed back to October or November by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The iPhone 12 release may be pushed back to October or November due to design delays caused by the coronavirus.
  • The iPhone 12 Pro Max may not enter mass production until October, which might mean that Apple’s high-end iPhone model may not arrive until December.
  • Given the impact the coronavirus has had on the economy, iPhone 12 sales will be drastically lower than many analysts initially anticipated.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Apple typically unveils new iPhone models in early September followed by a worldwide release on a Friday about 10 days later. Apple adheres to this pattern to the best of its ability and, in turn, it’s been quite easy to accurately predict iPhone launch schedules over the past few years.

The iPhone 12 release, however, has Apple swimming in unchartered waters. For starters, there are reports that travel restrictions associated with the coronavirus impacted the iPhone 12 development process as it precluded Apple engineers from traveling to China and inspecting prototypes. Additionally, the economic impact of the coronavirus has been so drastic that it may compel Apple to slightly push back the iPhone 12 release until the economy picks back up.
