Google wants to start making more money from Maps, and we all know what that means

Google is reportedly about to bring a version of the same playbook that turned its best-in-class search engine into an unstoppable money machine over to Google Maps, its service that more than 1 billion people rely on for directions and other related information. What that means for users, according to a new Bloomberg report, is that we may start to see more things like sponsored listings from businesses that have paid to be atop Google Maps results when you search for a variety of information, like nearby businesses.

Hopefully, Google’s reported interest in leaning on Maps as it hunts for new sources of revenue won’t mean the company goes overboard — like the way you have to scroll down past a slew of ads and highlighted results after conducting a Google Search, for example. As a heavy Google Maps user, though, I’m wary, especially given that relevancy may be even more important when looking for information within Maps than in Search.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: SpaceX is going to launch the Falcon Heavy rocket for the second time. I know, I know, that was supposed to happen this past weekend, and then again on Tuesday, but delays pushed it back repeatedly. Now it’s scheduled for today, and the weather looks like it’s going to cooperate.

Today’s launch, which is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. EST, will see SpaceX use the Falcon Heavy in a commercial capacity for the very first time, sending a communications satellite from Arabsat into orbit around Earth. When it does so, you can watch the entire event live right here.

%name Get two Sonos speakers and a $30 Amazon gift card for less than the price of one rival speaker by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Sonos had a bunch of decent deals going this past Black Friday, but there was one in particular that was our favorite. For just $298, you could get a Two Room Set with Sonos Play:1 + $30 Amazon Gift Card. That’s two wireless speakers with amazing sound and a free $30 Amazon gift card for less than a single Apple HomePod speaker… even after Apple just reduced the price! That great deal might’ve started on Black Friday last year, but it’s somehow still available on Amazon’s site so get in on the action while you still can.

Two Room Set with Sonos Play:1 + $30 Amazon Gift card: $298.00

Here are the highlights from the product page:

  • Works with Alexa for voice control (Alexa device sold separately)
  • Fill two separate rooms with different music, or link them together to hear the same song in both. Great surround speakers for your Sonos home theater, too
  • Versatile, compact fit. Place them wherever you want and enjoy rich, room-filling sound
  • Streams all your favorite music services like Amazon Music Unlimited, Spotify, Pandora, Apple Music and more
  • Easy 10-minute wi-fi set up. No Bluetooth pairing problems or interruptions
  • Connects wirelessly to Sonos speakers in other rooms so you can expand your Home Sound System when you’re ready

Apple is rumored to be replacing iTunes on the Mac with something even better

%name Apple is rumored to be replacing iTunes on the Mac with something even better by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

iTunes used to be the app I used most frequently on my Mac. It’s where I’d go to buy and listen to music, enjoy podcasts, and even watch downloaded movies and TV shows on occasion. These days, though, I rarely use iTunes. In fact, I can’t even remember the last time I opened the app at all.

Part of the problem — aside from the fact that the world has largely gone mobile — is that iTunes on the Mac has steadily become a bloated mess. As it stands now, Apple houses an insane amount of content under the iTunes umbrella and, as a result, actually using the app to find and enjoy content has become downright cumbersome, if not confusing.

LG’s transparent foldable smartphone design barely looks like a phone at all

%name LG’s transparent foldable smartphone design barely looks like a phone at all by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

It was probably inevitable that we’d eventually see a smartphone design that combines transparent screens with a foldable form factor. LG has just patented a design for such a handset this week, following its experimentation with see-through displays over the last few years — and then showing off a partly transparent OLED TV at CES a few months ago.

Sony, meanwhile, has also been thinking along these same lines in terms of smartphones, patenting a design for a transparent handset at the end of 2018. And then on Tuesday, the US Patent and Trademark Office published the LG patent (which you can see here) for its own version of that same idea — a smartphone that’s transparent, but also foldable.

Samsung’s first foldable phone, the Galaxy Fold is coming soon to various markets. Samsung confirmed as much weeks ago when it finally gave the handset a proper launch. Samsung then showed the Galaxy Fold to the world at Mobile World Congress, but nobody was actually allowed to touch it.

All you could do was look at the handset, placed behind a glass window, playing a Galaxy Fold presentation video on loop. But the phone’s launch is only getting closer, as hands-on clips have started popping up online. The most recent video seems to indicate that AT&T will soon launch the handset.

The best-selling wireless headphones on Amazon are back down to just $29

%name The best selling wireless headphones on Amazon are back down to just $29 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

In a world where good wireless headphones can easily cost $200, $300, or even more, it’s pretty easy to see why the Mpow 059 Over-Ear Bluetooth Headphones have been best-sellers for years on Amazon. They pack great sound and impressive battery life into a stylish design, and yet they cost a fraction of what companies like Beats and Bose charge. That fraction is even smaller today, because there’s a $5 coupon you can clip on the Amazon page that slashes the price to just $28.99. At that price, you’d have to be crazy to pass these up.

Mpow 059 Bluetooth Headphones Over Ear, Hi-Fi Stereo Wireless Headset, Foldable, Soft Memory-Pr…: $28.99

Here’s some additional info from the product page:

  • IMPRESSIVE SOUND QUALITY IS THE ULTIMATE GOAL & PLEASE NOTE: 1. This item is passive noise isolating, NOT active noise cancellation(ANC), it can’t cancel the noise completely but it won’t drain the battery and damage the sound. As an additional factor of sound quality, it is better than ANC. 2. The closed-back design provides immersive Hi-Fi sound with CSR chip and 40mm driver together. If you care more about Noise Cancellation than Sound Quality, you may consider other alternatives.
  • BUILT TO STAY COMFORTABLE: The Memory-protein ear cushion simulate human skin texture, ensuring lasting comfort. The stainless steel slider and softly padded headband allows you to find the perfect fit without constraint and provide excellent durability.
  • NEVER POWER OFF, BOTH WIRELESS & WIRED: 1. The wireless mode: Battery update to 20-hr music time/ talking time in a single charge, instead of 13-15 hrs from Oct 1, 2017; 2. The Wired mode: you can also use it as a wired headphone with the provided audio cable so the headphones will never power off.
  • FOLDABLE DESIGN WITH A PORTABLE BAG & GENTLE REMINDER : The foldable Headband is not only designed for saving your desk space but for carrying in the provided bag. Gentle Reminder: Depending on your head/ear size/shape, it may be a little tight(feels like“on ear”) for someone to wear which is designed to avoid sound leakage. In case of that and to get both audio and wearing comfort, please take off the headphone every 1-2 hrs to get your ears relax and protect them from muggy environment in use.
