Warming oceans may be pushing dolphins to the brink

Scientists have been warning us for years that human activity has been slowly warming up our planet. It’s not easy to see when you’re looking at localized weather patterns, but a macro view of climate trends shows the reality we’re facing. Ocean temperatures are a good way of tracking global warming, and a new study suggests that even short-term spikes in sea temperatures can have a dramatic impact on the creatures that call it home.

A new study in Current Biology looked at how ocean temperatures are affecting one of mankind’s favorite ocean creatures, dolphins, and what it reveals is more than a little bit frightening.

Google on Wednesday unveiled a brand new Google Assistant feature, making the virtual assistant legen — wait for it — dary. How I Met Your Mother jokes aside, Google Assistant is truly getting a legendary voice cameo. That’s John Legend, to be more precise.

If you so desire, you can set John Legend’s voice to replace the current Google Assistant voice you might be using. All you have to say to your Google Assistant device, whether it’s a phone (Android and iPhone), a smart speaker or smart display is: “Hey Google, talk like a Legend.”

Nintendo has picked up the pace ever so slightly this month, as Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will gain access to three new games instead of two, which has been the norm so far in 2019. We’re still awaiting any news about the company’s plans to expand the service, but we might have to wait until E3 in June for that.

In the meantime, there are a few gems being added on April 10th, including Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. If you’ve never played it before, it’s nothing like the Super Mario Bros. 2 you might remember from the late ’80s. It’s also much more difficult, so be prepared. And speaking of difficult, Punch-Out!! is coming as well.

Smuggler caught attempting to transport over 750 tarantulas to the Philippines

Smuggling contraband into a country is a dirty business, especially when the goods being illegally transported are things like drugs or weapons. A man in the Philippines has been caught smuggling goods from Poland in boxes made to look like they contained cookies and other tasty treats. What customs officials found when they looked inside, however, definitely didn’t match the packaging.

As Associated Press reports, the gift-wrapped boxes contained new fewer than 757 live tarantulas, all of which were bound for new homes in the Philippines. The arachnids, which were being brought in to be sold illegally to collectors and enthusiasts, have now landed the recipient in a heap of trouble.

Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus is expected to launch its first 5G smartphone this quarter, although it’s still unclear whether it’ll be part of the OnePlus 7 series or not.

The 5G phone was shown at MWC 2019 a few weeks ago, although it was wearing heavy camouflage, so the actual design of the handset wasn’t revealed during the game streaming demo. The OnePlus 7, meanwhile, is also expected to drop in the first half of the year, and we have already several renders and leaks showing OnePlus dropping the notch design in favor of a camera slider mechanism. An accessory maker released imagery that further reinforces those rumors.

AI researchers scold Amazon for selling flawed face-recognition tech to the police

Amazon has come under fire before for Rekognition, the facial recognition technology that the company has allowed police to use and which has led to concerns the company is essentially supporting the surveillance state. The technology has also come under scrutiny in the past for a variety of other reasons, such as the fact that the system could be flawed in a way that misidentifies minorities, for example.

Now, leading artificial intelligence researchers from across the technology and academic spectrum — including from Amazon rivals, like Google, Microsoft and Facebook — have published an open letter via Medium essentially scolding Amazon over selling the tech to police. And, of course, the letter asks the company to stop.

Boeing’s Starliner is officially delayed, again

%name Boeing’s Starliner is officially delayed, again by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

It hasn’t been a great year thus far for Boeing. The company has been dealing with a whole bunch of its commercial planes being grounded due to a pair of crashes that claimed hundreds of lives, and its contract with NASA to deliver a crewed spacecraft has resulted in nothing but cost overruns and massive delays. Now, after several weeks of whispers, NASA has officially announced the delay of the Boeing Starliner.

The Starliner, which along with SpaceX’s Crew Dragon was supposed to be NASA’s ticket to sending astronauts into space without paying for help from Russia, has had a long and bumpy development. In order to have any hope of salvaging the work done and money already spent on Starliner, NASA was essentially forced to extend its agreement with Boeing or come up empty-handed.

Verizon turned on its 5G network a week earlier than expected

%name Verizon turned on its 5G network a week earlier than expected by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The wait for 5G is over, as Verizon announced on Wednesday that it has turned on its 5G Ultra Wideband network in select areas of Minneapolis and Chicago a week ahead of schedule. As we reported last month, the initial plan was to launch 5G in those two markets on April 11th, but the service is live for subscribers right now.

There is one major caveat that comes along with this news: Only one 5G-capable phone is currently being sold by Verizon. In order to take advantage of the upgraded network, not only will you need to be in one of the areas listed in Verizon’s press release, but you’ll also need to own a Motorola Moto Z3 and the 5G Moto Mod. No other phone sold by the carrier will be able to reach the speeds Verizon promises, leaving very few potential 5G users.
