It’s far too early and lazy to compare Apple TV+ to mature services like Netflix and Hulu

If we’re being honest, it’s easy to scoff at Apple’s ambitions in the TV space. Aside from the fact that the company has little to zero experience when it comes to rolling out media content that people actually enjoy watching, Apple’s media event this past Monday lacked a “wow” factor. I’m sorry, but Oprah’s surprise appearance simply doesn’t do the trick. Indeed, the majority of Apple’s TV pitch on Monday was largely comprised of Hollywood stars droning on about the shows set to arrive on Apple TV+ later in the year.

What’s more, Apple didn’t even reveal a price for its nascent TV subscription service, prompting many to assume it won’t be significantly cheaper, if at all, than Netflix or Hulu. Interestingly enough, much of the narrative surrounding Apple TV+ centers on whether or not the service can put a dent in a streaming landscape already populated with a number of established players, with Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and HBO being the four most prominent examples today.

Here’s why the Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X may be impossible to find at launch

Do foldable phones represent the wave of the future or are they merely symptomatic of a smartphone market that has largely become stagnant? Put differently, there’s a case to be made that smartphones updates have become so predictable and, dare I say, boring, that we’ve started to attach lofty expectations to foldable phones despite a considerable number of drawbacks. If we’re being honest, many of the foldable smartphone designs we’ve seen to date appear to be unpolished prototypes at best, if not downright clunky.

The recently unveiled Galaxy Fold from Samsung is particularly uninspiring, though the Huawei Mate X does seem to offer up a more compelling industrial design. Nonetheless, a new report from Digitimes reveals that folks eager to get their hands on these two may have to wait a while.

In Tim Cook: The Genius Who Took Apple to the Next Level, a pundit at one point tries to make the case to author Leander Kahney that Apple’s current chief executive is the best one the company has ever had. Better even than Cook’s legendary predecessor, the product visionary responsible for many of the company’s hit devices.

Xbox free Games with Gold for April 2019

%name Xbox free Games with Gold for April 2019 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

There have been so many good-to-great titles coming out in recent weeks (Devil May Cry 5, The Division 2, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice), that you probably already blew through your allowance for video games this month. Thankfully, Games with Gold exists, and all Xbox Live Gold members will be treated to four free games in April.

It’s a bit of an odd selection though with The Technomancer — a poorly-reviewed action RPG from 2016 — being at the top of the list. But the backward compatible Xbox 360 titles help to balance out April’s Games with Gold, as Star Wars Battlefront II (the original one!) is still fun to play in 2019, and Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 is a solid Tom Clancy shooter you can pick up once you’re burnt out on The Division 2.

World’s largest Tyrannosaurus found in Canada

The Tyrannosaurus rex is one of the most recognizable dinosaurs of all time. It’s played both hero and villain many times in pop culture, and it’s almost universally portrayed as a hulking brute of unimaginable power. The jury is still out on whether the massive ancient creature was primarily a predator or scavenger, but we’re still learning more about the species, including how large it was capable of growing.

A T. rex specimen found in Canada is helping researchers nail down that last point. It’s the largest rex skeleton ever discovered, and it’s estimated that the animal that left the fossils behind weighed in at an extraordinary 19,500 pounds.

Google launches AMP for Gmail, making your email feel more like webpages

Google first announced a little more than a year ago that it would eventually be bringing its accelerated mobile pages framework, or AMP for short, to email, which would allow for the creation of richer and more dynamic experiences in a digital realm where people still spend an outsized portion of their day. Today, Google announced the arrival of AMP for Email, officially bringing the capabilities to Gmail that will turn your messages into something that actually resembles an interactive, webpage-like experience.

Xiaomi’s 100W charger could fill up your phone’s battery in less than 20 minutes

As exciting as the latest innovations in smartphone design over the past several months have been, many of the key technologies that power those phones aren’t advancing at quite the same speed. For example, it still takes more than two hours to fully charge the iPhone XS from 0% to 100% with the charger that comes in the package. Even modern “fast charging” technology, while useful, isn’t likely to blow anyone away.

But the dream of fully charging your phone in minutes might not be as distant as it seems. On Tuesday, XDA shared a video originally posted on Weibo by Lu Weibing, head of Xiaomi’s Redmi brand, showing the company’s 100W Super Charge Turbo, which is seemingly capable of fully charging a 4,000 mAh battery in 17 minutes.

The popularity of Apple Music on Android is on the rise

While the cumulative number of Apple Music subscribers still hasn’t managed to outpace Spotify, Apple’s streaming service continues to enjoy impressive growth. Last we heard, Apple Music boasts upwards of 56 million paid subscribers, an impressive figure given that the service isn’t even four years old at this point.

Also impressive is that a growing number of Android users have shown an interest in giving Apple Music a test run. According to recent data from Sensor Tower, the number of Apple Music installs from the Google Play Store during the first quarter of 2019 hit a record-breaking 3.8 million.

“Imagine if, for the first time, our heroes all lost.”

That’s how Robert Downey Jr. sets up the opening of Marvel’s just-released first featurette for Avengers: Endgame — which, while it doesn’t showcase any new footage, does splice together previously seen clips along with interviews from cast members that helps illuminate the stakes for what’s to come. “We lost,” Chris Evans laments about the dire outcome confronting the heroes thanks to the turn of events in Avengers: Infinity War.

NASA’s Curiosity rover spots a bed of Earth-like pebbles

Most of the views of Mars we’ve seen have come from NASA’s trusty rovers, and while they’ve shown us some pretty stunning stuff, you can almost always immediately tell that you’re looking at a photo of Mars when you see one. The sky is almost always a hazy orange, and the landscape looks windswept and devoid of recognizable features.

One of the latest images sent back by the Curiosity rover does away with that by showing us a bed of pebbles that look like they could be sitting along a riverbed right here on Earth.
