Apple’s new privacy ad is definitely going to annoy Facebook and Google

“Privacy matters,” Apple declares in the opening frame of its just-released new iPhone ad, continuing the same marketing push that also led to the billboard Apple showed off at CES earlier this year — the sign that promised passersby “What happens on your iPhone, stays on your iPhone.”

It was a subtle dig at companies like Facebook and Google, which are likewise probably going to be annoyed at this new ad from the iPhone maker that’s presented with a somewhat lighthearted touch — via slammed doors that display “Keep out” signs, for example, as well as curtains and window locks. We also see a quick successions of signs at the beginning that declare “No trespassing” and “Private property.” But the message is clear. “If privacy matters in your life,” the ad notes at one point, “it should matter to the phone your life is on.”

‘Left 4 Dead’ developer returns with a new co-op zombie shooter

One of the titles that defined the early days of the Steam digital distribution platform on PC was a cooperative first-person shooter called Left 4 Dead. The game consisted of several short campaigns in which a group of four players would attempt to make their way to safety with a zombie horde hot on their trail.

It wasn’t the first zombie shooter ever made, but for years, Left 4 Dead was the most popular, warranting a sequel a year after its initial release. There are still thousands of people playing Left 4 Dead 2 to this day, but over nine years after its launch in 2009, developer Turtle Rock Studios has yet to release a sequel. And while there may never be a Left 4 Dead 3, Turtle Rock shocked the world on Thursday with a surprise announcement.

NASA may be forced to rely on a commercial rocket to test its new crew capsule

NASA is betting big on its Space Launch System and Orion spacecraft as a one-two punch that will send astronauts on missions to the Moon and beyond. Both the Orion and SLS are currently in development, but they’re not progressing at nearly the same rate.

This leaves NASA in a bit of a pinch as it looks at its immediate schedule. A lunar test flight of the Orion, perched atop the SLS rocket to send it on its way, was supposed to take place by the middle of 2020, but the SLS is way behind schedule. The Orion program, meanwhile, appears ready to meet the date, and NASA leadership is now considering hiring a commercial rocket to send Orion around the Moon.

America’s favorite mobster family is returning to the screen soon — the big screen this time, that is, thanks to a release date of Sept. 25, 2020, that’s now been confirmed for the Sopranos prequel movie which has been in the works.

It’s been a little more than 20 years now since The Sopranos first premiered on HBO, with its dark subject matter and prestige storytelling setting up the network to enjoy an epic broadcast run. One that HBO is still in the throes of today, some 12 years after the end of The Sopranos and which has given us plenty of other of series following in its wake (like Game Of Thrones) that quite possibly couldn’t have ended up anywhere else. Meanwhile, fandom around The Sopranos, one of HBO’s shows that started it all, also still remains high — which is no doubt a reason we’re getting a prequel in the first place.

Samsung will fix Galaxy S10 fingerprint sensor issues in future updates

%name Samsung will fix Galaxy S10 fingerprint sensor issues in future updates by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The Galaxy S10 is already shaping up to be a huge commercial success for Samsung. The phone’s novel design and brand new features make it a significant upgrade compared to last year’s Galaxy S9, a phone that failed to sell as well as Samsung had hoped. But with new hardware also comes new issues.

For example, the ultrasonic in-display fingerprint reader of the Galaxy S10 isn’t always behaving as expected. The sensor has no equivalent in the business, but Samsung has acknowledged that some users have experienced issues with it, and said this week that a software update is in the works.

Apple’s iCloud is the latest service to suffer an outage this week

%name Apple’s iCloud is the latest service to suffer an outage this week by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Following the Verizon outage on Tuesday morning, the Gmail and YouTube issue on Tuesday night, and the “server configuration change” that took down Facebook and Instagram for hours on Wednesday, Apple has decided to join in on the fun with an outage of its own. According to the System Status dashboard on Apple’s site, virtually every iCloud service is currently experiencing issues, including Contacts, Drive and Mail.

By my count, there are twenty problematic services at the time of writing, with all of the issues having begun at 11:00 a.m. this morning. Apple hasn’t provided any additional details beyond which services are struggling, mostly using a single phrase to explain every issue: “Users may be unable to access this service.”

When Astronaut Nick Hague and cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin were last strapped into a Russian-made Soyuz spacecraft in late 2018, things didn’t exactly go as planned. A last-second abort sent the pair careening back towards Earth, which is obviously not where they intended to end up. Today, they’ll get a second chance.

Both Hague and Ovchinin will once again be perched atop a Russian rocket as it speeds into space, and this time they’ll be joined by Hague’s colleague, fellow NASA astronaut Christina Koch. The trio will blast off to the International Space Station today at 3:14 p.m. EST, and you can watch the launch live right there.
