Japan’s asteroid probe left a big dark patch when it touched Ryugu

Japan’s space agency JAXA is still celebrating the success of its first attempt to collect a sample of the asteroid Ryugu using the Hayabusa2 spacecraft, and it seems the asteroid itself is now left with a mark to prove it.

In a new set of images released by JAXA we can see Ryugu is now painted with a large dark blob that now graces its dusty white surface. The change is due to dust that was kicked up from beneath the surface when the spacecraft fired its projectile, causing a cloud of debris. Some of that debris was then collected by the spacecraft and will eventually be returned to Earth.

The top US cyber diplomat brought the country’s opposition to Chinese tech giant Huawei to MWC this week, with Robert Strayer telling reporters in Barcelona that the beleaguered smartphone maker is “duplicitous and deceitful,” and warning allies to avoid the firm’s products.

Strayer’s official title is Deputy Assistant Secretary for Cyber and International Communications and Information Policy with the US State Department. During his remarks at MWC, he reiterated the United States’ appeal to other countries to steer clear of all things Huawei — and, specifically, for US allies to keep Huawei away from their countries’ 5G networks.

Trusty law enforcement drone helps nab hostage taker in California

Drones have become big sellers in hobbyist circles and prices on them are now low enough that just about anyone with the desire to fly one can pick up a decent quadcopter for a reasonable cost. But drones aren’t just recreational in nature, and law enforcement agencies have begun to adopt them in greater numbers.

A recent showcase of just how beneficial an eye-in-the-sky can be comes to us from Campbell, California, where a SWAT team was attempting to defuse a standoff with an armed man inside a Denny’s restaurant. The drone proved valuable in assessing the conditions inside the business and ultimately gave police the information they needed to successfully flush the suspect out.

Motorola’s first 5G phone is a display-less device you attach to your existing 4G phone

Motorola unveiled the Moto Z3 back in August, labeling it the first 5G-upgradeable phone in the world.

At the time, Motorola said that a special 5G Moto Mod will be unveiled in 2019, and that’s how the handset would connect to Verizon’s 5G network. Even so, the Moto Z3 wasn’t necessarily as exciting as other 2018 flagships last year, because it was built on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 mobile platform: A 2017 CPU that felt pretty old last summer. It turns out, however, that the 5G Moto Mod will be more exciting than we thought.

Swatch takes Samsung to court for allegedly copying its watch face designs

Samsung is back on the legal hot seat, returning to court to answer charges that it’s allegedly copied ideas from one of its competitors.

The rival that’s leveled the charges against Samsung this time, though, is not Apple. This time around it’s the Swiss watchmaker Swatch Group — which includes brands like Omega and Swatch — which has filed a complaint against Samsung, arguing that Samsung makes downloadable watch faces available for some of its watches that infringe on Swatch trademarks.

Our Solar System is full of planets and moons that are quite interesting, varying from dusty rock worlds like Mars to frigid collections of methane lakes like on Saturn’s moon Titan. But of all the objects orbiting the Sun, Jupiter has to be the most interesting to look at. There’s just so much going on in its swirling clouds that you could stare forever and never get bored.

NASA’s Juno orbiter has been doing some fantastic work as it orbits the gas giant, sending back stunning images of the planet in greater detail than anyone has ever seen. NASA choose to showcase one such image this week, and boy is it pretty.

Apple Music support might be coming to Google Home devices soon

%name Apple Music support might be coming to Google Home devices soon by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Apple and Google might be mortal rivals when it comes to smartphone operating systems, but sometimes, it pays to work together. To that end, we weren’t exactly shocked to find out this week that Apple Music support is apparently in the works for Google Home devices. The option to add Apple Music as a linked provider in the Google Home app on iOS was first discovered by a MacRumors reader, which the site was able to confirm.

As MacRumors notes, Apple Music was previously listed under a “limited availability” section of the app, but has since moved over to the main Music settings screen under “More music services.” But despite the fact that it appears there alongside Pandora, Spotify, and others, it can’t actually be linked with a Google Home yet.

Hands-on with the best-looking traditional Android phone at MWC 2019

%name Hands on with the best looking traditional Android phone at MWC 2019 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

It happens every year when I swing by Sony’s booth at the Mobile World Congress: I leave impressed by its latest smartphones, especially the flagship model.

The same happened this week, as Sony unveiled three new phones at the show, including the Xperia 1, Xperia 10 series, and Xperia L3. And let me tell you this: The Xperia 1 is probably the best-looking traditional Android handset launched at the show. I say “traditional” for two reasons. First, because the Mate X is easily the best-looking smartphone of this year’s Mobile World Congress, but that’s a brand new form factor for the industry. Secondly, because the Galaxy S10 wasn’t technically unveiled in Barcelona, but rather in California a few days before the show.
