After a full day of announcements at Mobile World Congress 2019, two trends are absolutely clear. First of all, the 5G phones are finally coming, after years of development. Samsung Galaxy S10+ 5G, Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G, Huawei Mate X, and LG V50 ThinQ were unveiled in the past few days. And then we have phones with huge, foldable displays, including the Samsung Galaxy Fold, the Huawei Mate X, a TCL prototype, and the V50 ThinQ Dual Screen (this one isn’t foldable, however). Lenovo doesn’t have a 5G phone out yet, but the company unveiled a big smartphone of its own, one that’s as large as a tablet. But it’s not the foldable kid.

The biggest night in film has finally arrived, as the 91st Academy Awards are set to get going on Sunday night at 5 PM PT / 8 PM ET on ABC. There are a wide variety of notable story lines coming into this year’s ceremony, but none have received more exhaustive coverage that the fact that the Oscars are going to air without a host for the first time in 30 years. Even if you don’t care about the awards, it might be worth tuning in just to see how that shakes out.

Of course, Best Picture is always a hot topic when it comes to the Oscars, but for the first time, Netflix has a realistic chance of walking away with the event’s most prestigious award. Roma has some stout competition from the likes of Green Book, A Star Is Born, and even dark horse (and fan favorite) Black Panther.

Apple has a clever plan to fight off patent trolls

As Apple continues to deal with patent trolls on all fronts, the company recently decided to take matters into its own hands. As confirmed via TechCrunch, Apple recently decided to close two of its stores located in the Eastern District of Texas, long a favored jurisdiction among patent trolls.

With the stores set to close on April 12, Apple will no longer have an established place of business in the area and, consequently, will potentially hinder patent trolls who prefer to file suits in the district because judges and juries there tend to be overwhelmingly sympathetic to plaintiffs. Interestingly enough, a study a few years ago found that a whopping 40% of all patent lawsuits in the United States were filed in the Eastern District of Texas.

China’s gene-edited babies may have enhanced intelligence due to genetic quirk

Late last year, a Chinese scientist named He Jiankui boldly declared that he had produced what would be the world’s first genetically modified humans. In working with embryos of families with HIV-positive parents, the scientist used the gene editing technology CRISPR to delete a specific gene.

Now, researchers believe that the twin girls who were reportedly born healthy may actually have altered brain function as a result. In fact, it’s possible that the deletion of the gene, called CCR5, might have actually made them smarter than they would otherwise have been, but it will be some time before we know for sure.

Samsung may have unveiled the Galaxy S10 a few days before the unofficial start of the Mobile World Congress, but its competitors are undoubtedly ready to play ball. We saw earlier on Sunday Huawei introduce the Mate X foldable phone, followed by HMD’s five-lens Nokia 9 PureView flagship. The last event of the day, LG’s press conference, brings us the company’s main answer to the Galaxy S10, and the iPhone XS for that matter, the G8 ThinQ phone that LG already confirmed before the trade show, and which was mentioned in several leaks in the past few months.

MWC 2019 hasn’t even officially started, but, like every year, all the major press events are scheduled for the Sunday that precedes the first day of the massive mobile trade show in Barcelona, Spain. Samsung is an exception this year, as the company decided to skip the usual Sunday event to get a few days of extra attention from the press. That’s why the Galaxy S10 versions and the Galaxy Fold launched earlier than expected.

While MWC hasn’t even started, it’s absolutely clear that foldable devices and 5G phones will be a significant thing this year. And LG made a phone that addresses both of these new trends.

When the Avengers return in April in Avengers: Endgame, we’ll get answers to all the questions we had at the end of Infinity War, and we’ve got quite a few questions that need addressing. Until then, however, fans will not stop producing interesting theories about how the Avengers will win the day in Endgame, and about other events in the movies. That’s the case for today’s theory. While it does have one big flaw, it’s still exciting nonetheless. A Redditor claims that a beloved character has died in Infinity War and nobody even saw it happen.

LG is hosting the fourth big smartphone event from Barcelona this Sunday, and it’s in a time slot that is usually reserved for Samsung’s Galaxy S announcements. However, Samsung did things a little different this year, as it ambushed its competitors with a massive Unpacked event last week where it launched the new Galaxy S10 flagship series as well as its first foldable phone. LG doesn’t have a foldable phone in the pipeline — not for MWC 2019 at least — but the company is about to unveil an Android phone like no other. On top of that, its first-ever 5G phone will be introduced at the show. Unlike its competitors, however, LG isn’t providing a live stream of the event, so make sure you follow our live blog at the bottom of this post for all the latest updates from the press conference.

Everything new coming to Netflix this week, and everything leaving (week of Feb. 24)

The end of this week just so happens to overlap with the beginning of next month, which means you’ve got a metric ton of new content to choose from over the weekend. There aren’t too many highlights to point out, but here are a few licensed additions that stand out: A Clockwork Orange, The Hurt Locker, Wet Hot American Summer, Winter’s Bone, and a whole bunch of Jeopardy episodes for those of you who don’t want too much excitement.

Sadly, the first of the month also marks the biggest collection of departures, but we aren’t losing too much of value. It’s sad to see Ghostbusters go, but unless you’re a huge Bruce Almighty fan, you should be alright.
