As the United States continues to struggle with a rising number of opioid addicts who were previously prescribed powerful painkillers due to a variety of ailments, the medical community is stuck between a rock and a hard place. As pain medication, opioids are incredibly potent, but they’re also highly addictive, and alternatives are hard to come by.

Now, researchers in France believe they may have come up with something that will help. It’s a new kind of “nano-drug” painkiller that actually replicates some of the action of opioid-based drugs like morphine but offers relief with less potential for abuse and overuse.

LG’s next flagship, the G8 ThinQ, has garnered a slew of tech press headlines today in part because its all-screen design will not only support 3D face recognition, but also double as a speaker. The company will be showing it off a little more than a week from now at MWC — where it’s possible LG may also talk about yet another G8 variant.

A new trademark application shows that LG is apparently going to release an S-version of the G8, something it’s not done before with its G-series handsets. The trademark was spotted by the folks at Dutch blog LetsGoDigital, which reports that LG filed for the “G8s” brand name on the 1st of this month.

Thousands of Android apps have been creating a permanent record of everything you do

%name Thousands of Android apps have been creating a permanent record of everything you do by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

New research out of the International Computer Science Institute in California has turned up a worrisome finding: About 17,000 Android apps have apparently been not only tracking your activity over the long-term (even in instances where users make it clear they don’t want that), but they’ve also been creating a permanent record on your device of every single thing you do, which a CNET report today notes in most cases is a violation of Google’s policy on collecting data that can be used to target advertising to users.

Any two Netflix subscribers likely have at least six shows in common

%name Any two Netflix subscribers likely have at least six shows in common by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

A few weeks ago, I was browsing through Netflix on a friend’s account and was taken aback at how different his splash screen looked from mine. Whereas my splash screen was primarily littered with comedy and drama suggestions, his was filled with an assortment of horror-oriented TV shows and movies, many of which I had never even heard of.

This, of course, is simply par for the course. With Netflix pumping out an insane amount of content each and every month, the company knows that average users won’t be able to efficiently browse through a seemingly endless list of viewing options. So, instead, Netflix does a pretty solid job of offering up personalized viewing suggestions tailored-for each individual user, all based on a user’s previous viewing history. The end result is that every person’s Netflix splash page looks a little bit different.

Verizon is releasing a new app next month to fight robocalls

%name Verizon is releasing a new app next month to fight robocalls by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

We cover the widespread — and still growing — problem of robocalls and spam calls pretty extensively, in part because the people behind this seem to get more creative at finding ways to essentially spam our phones while industry and government officials seem to make little headway fighting back. Thankfully, though, that’s starting to change, little by little.

We told you last month about T-Mobile’s new “Caller Verified” tool that’s designed to crack down on spoofed calls — those calls you get that seem to be coming from a local number but that are really just from spammers who are trying to trick you into answering the phone. T-Mobile’s tool uses existing industry STIR and SHAKEN technology standards to assure phone owners that the call they’re getting is indeed from a legitimate number.

In a story that was absolutely meant for Valentine’s Day, dinosaur researchers have uncovered fossils of a new species of ancient reptile that “wears its heart on its tail.” The creature, which was discovered thanks to artifacts collected way back in 2004 in Africa, is helping scientists understand more about the diverse group of dinos known as titanosaurs.

In a new paper published in PLOS One, the research team that made the discovery explains how they managed to identify an entirely new species from fossils that were initially uncovered a decade and a half ago.
