The roll out of 5G support is without question a game-changing development that will fundamentally impact the way we use our smartphones. The bad news, though, is that it’s going to take some time before broad 5G support actually becomes a reality. Indeed, this is why Apple will reportedly wait until 2020 before introducing iPhones with support for 5G.

In the interim, AT&T has adopted an interesting, if not controversial and downright misleading tactic. As you may recall, word surfaced a few weeks back that AT&T will begin replacing the LTE indicator on select smartphone models with a 5G E symbol. The symbol will only appear in markets that happen to support AT&T’s fastest LTE technologies.

Over the weekend, the sequel to 2016’s first installment in the Deadpool franchise passed a milestone that would no doubt elicit a joyful wisecrack or two from the delightfully profane Merc with a Mouth.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Deadpool 2, including the re-cut PG13 version Once Upon a Deadpool, has now passed $784 million at the global box office. The sequel hit that mark over the Super Bowl weekend, making it 20th Century Fox’s highest-grossing X-Men title now that it’s edged past the previous record-holder. Which, by the way, is a reference to the first Deadpool movie, which raked in $783 million globally.

SpaceX has a big year ahead of it as it continues to fulfill rocket launch contracts for clients eager to send stuff into space, but it’s the company’s Starship project that has gotten the most attention from science fans.

The Starship platform, which boss Elon Musk says will be the project that travels to Mars and beyond at some point in the not-so-distant future, will begin launch testing soon. Before that can happen, SpaceX needs to make sure its engines are working as intended, and a test firing conducted on Sunday suggests that all is well.

There are some Apple rumors that simply refuse to die, and the notion of Apple acquiring Netflix is one of them. In a new research note from JP Morgan, analyst Samik Chatterjee suggests that Apple should use its growing cash hoard to make a bold acquisition in the media space, with Netflix in particular being an attractive target.

“We think Netflix is best strategic fit on leading position in engagement level as well as original content, differentiating itself from pure aggregators of content,”Chatterjee said in a note picked up by CNBC. “We believe there is value to acquiring the most successful player in this space, which is hard to replicate with a smaller player in this market.”

A few weeks before officials from the US Justice Dept. announced the unsealing of indictments against China-based tech giant Huawei — indictments that included almost two dozen criminal charges against the company — FBI officials set up a sting operation in Las Vegas. CES 2019, the splashy consumer electronics show held in Sin City each year, was under way, and agents were working with US-based startup Akhan Semiconducter. Akhan makes smartphone glass coated with synthetic diamonds, and after delivering a sample to Huawei back in 2017, the glass had come back damaged — in such a way that the US company suspected Huawei was trying to copy it. As a result, it reached out to the bureau.

Enter the FBI, which joined Akhan founder Adam Khan and chief operating officer Carl Shurboff in a meeting with Huawei representatives around a table at the Las Vegas burger joint PrimeBurger, inside the food court at The Venetian.

Whether or not augmented reality ever becomes as pervasive as Apple thinks it will, there’s no doubt that it can be a valuable tool for app developers. The key is to find a use case that actually makes sense, which is what Warby Parker has done with its latest update. In the newest version of its mobile app, Warby Parker has added a new feature called “Virtual Try-On,” which uses AR to overlay a pair of glasses on your face.

Warby Parker is perhaps best known for allowing customers to choose five frames, have them shipped to their home for free, and try them all out before making a purchase. While the virtual try-on feature might not be a true alternative, it could at least offer some guidance before the customer puts in a physical order.

Over the weekend, the surprise reveal of a new battle royale game called Apex Legends was spoiled by the many influencers and YouTubers that developer Respawn Entertainment invited to play the game ahead of its launch. This isn’t the first time a game’s reveal has been ruined, but Respawn CEO Vince Zampella took it in stride and confirmed the game’s existence, telling everyone to check the game’s Twitch account on Monday.

The teaser stream began on Monday morning with a series of still images punctuated by short clips of characters and gameplay, but at noon Pacific time, Respawn finally opened up the flood gates. Apex Legends is a free-to-play battle royale shooter (yes, like Fortnite), and best of all, you can download it right now.
