Facebook just shut down the iPhone version of the most despicable spying program it ever created

%name Facebook just shut down the iPhone version of the most despicable spying program it ever created by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Facebook keeps promising it’ll do better to serve its customers, but more and more reports reveal nasty surprises about the way it conducts its business. Because Facebook and all its other products are free to use online services, they need to make money off of ads, so Facebook has to collect plenty of data from consumers. It’s the same thing Google does, and it’s a compromise that works for many people. But it’s one thing to collect browsing data, and quite another to spy on people via research apps that pay users, including minors, a low monthly fee in exchange to everything that happens on a mobile device.

NASA offers best look yet at surface of space rock Bennu

%name NASA offers best look yet at surface of space rock Bennu by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx asteroid probe has already had quite an eventful year. After initially arriving at the space rock known as Bennu in early December, the spacecraft ended 2018 by successfully entering orbit around the object, making Bennu the smallest body ever orbited by a man made spacecraft.

Now, as NASA prepares for what will be a months-long investigation of the asteroid, the OSIRIS-REx team has revealed the most stunning images of the rock so far. Captured from orbit by the probe’s NavCam imaging tools, the photos give us an even better look at the debris-littered surface of Bennu.

Surprising no one, survey shows almost 60% of Americans have ditched cable TV

%name Surprising no one, survey shows almost 60% of Americans have ditched cable TV by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before, but cable TV is continuing to bleed subscribers in record numbers as they flock to cheaper Internet-based options — cutting the cord, in other words, in favor of options like Netflix, Hulu and the like. Indeed, a new survey of a little more than 5,000 Americans by Chicago-based Waterstone Management Group found that consumers are increasingly being lured by the content available between choices like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime — and the simplicity of the subscriptions, as opposed to the fees and contracts that come with cable packages — to finally cut cable out of their lives entirely.

Almost 60 percent of Americans, according to this new survey, have canceled their cable TV packages, with only 12 percent affirming they’re fine with continuing to pay traditional cable companies for TV. In another sign of how dire things have become for those cable companies, though, another 29 percent of Americans responded to this survey by saying they’re close to canceling their cable subscription and going all-in on streaming.

%name U.S. professor knew about Chinese scientist’s gene edited babies months before the rest of us by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

It’s now been a few months since Chinese scientist He Jiankui revealed that he had genetically edited human embryos and implanted them into mothers, resulting in at least two live births. The news rocked the genetics community as scientists the world over condemned the work and demanded that guidelines be put in place to prevent such experiments from continuing.

Now, as the fate of He is being decided by Chinese authorities, the Associated Press is reporting that a U.S. professor and Nobel Prize winner Craig Mello of the University of Massachusetts was receiving regular updates from He due to his position as an unpaid adviser for the Chinese scientist’s biotech firm.

Report: Facebook has been paying some teens for permission to track everything they do

%name Report: Facebook has been paying some teens for permission to track everything they do by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Already under fire for apparently tricking kids into spending their parents’ money to play games on the social networking platform, Facebook now finds itself confronting a new privacy wrinkle that’s emerged and reportedly involves the company paying teenagers and young adults for permission to track everything they do on their phones.

The report comes via TechCrunch, which notes that Facebook has been quietly paying users between the ages of 13 and 35 up to $20 a month — and a little more, in some cases — for permission to install a “Facebook Research” VPN on their phones. If this sounds suspiciously like Facebook’s Onavo Protect app the social network got in trouble for, with Apple actually banning it entirely, you’re not wrong.

Galaxy S10’s Samsung Pay app tipped to support Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies

This is now the third time we’ve heard that the Galaxy S10 will do something most Android phones can’t, including last year’s Samsung’s flagship — that’s support for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. A leak in December said the Galaxy S10 would feature both hot and cold crypto wallets, as well as transactions for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other major digital currencies. Then, a few days ago, we saw real-life photos of the Galaxy S10 revealing the Samsung Blockchain KeyStore functionality of the phone, as seen below.
