Roku introduces premium network subscriptions – with some pretty major exceptions

Roku is now the latest tech company hoping that all of you who don’t currently subscribe to premium cable channels like Showtime but want to — that you’ll be fine with paying Roku for that privilege instead of going to a channel like Showtime directly.

Facebook, remember, has reportedly been pondering this same move — that of allowing subscriptions to channels like HBO to help flesh out its currently skimpy Facebook Watch offering. Likewise, Apple is reportedly going to mingle its own content with other content you have to pay for once the iPhone maker finally rolls out its video streaming service.

NASA declares New Horizons flyby of Ultima Thule a huge success

While most of us were popping the corks on bottles of champagne, NASA engineers were holding their breath as they watched the calendar flip to 2019 on the East Coast. That’s because the New Horizons spacecraft, which has now traveled some 4 billion miles through our Solar System, finally made its flyby of the most distant object ever studied up close.

The probe’s target was the oblong space rock known as Ultima Thule, and even though the spacecraft passed the massive rock at around midnight EST, NASA had to wait another ten hours before they even knew if the probe performed as planned. Now, with signals finally coming back from New Horizons, NASA can rest easy.

If one of your New Year’s resolutions was to spend less money on video games, it’s your lucky day. The Epic Games Store is continuing its full year of free game giveaways this week with the super challenging puzzle platformer Super Meat Boy. Starting December 28th, the promotion is live until 11:59 PM ET on January 10th, 2019. As long as you grab it from the Epic Games Store before then, you will own it for life free of charge.

Super Meat Boy is the second game Epic Games is giving away for free, as Subnautica kicked the program off back in December. So far, only these two games have been confirmed as additions to the program, but we will likely hear more about the next set of games on January 10th (at the very latest).

iOS upgrade rates continue to destroy Android

%name iOS upgrade rates continue to destroy Android by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

iOS 12 admittedly isn’t chock full of dazzling new features, but that, of course, is by design. Due to a number of high-profile usability issues and bugs involving iOS 11, Apple with iOS 12 opted to slow things down a bit, take a breather, and focus on overall system stability and performance above all else. In turn, the response from iOS users has been overwhelmingly positive.

To this point, iOS 12 adoption remains incredibly strong and is easily outpacing iOS 11 adoption. Earlier today, Apple updated the stats on its developer page and revealed that 78% of all iOS devices introduced in the last four years are running iOS 12. This is an increase of about 6% in just about 4 weeks, a jump that can partially be attributed to what was likely a huge wave of iPhone upgrades over the recent holiday shopping season.

Remember that poll we told you about last month — the one where people said that out of all the existing movie franchises out there, Back to the Future is the one they’d most like to see a new movie from?

It was actually a fun exercise from the folks over at The Hollywood Reporter. Given that we’re living in something of a Golden Age when it comes to reboots of beloved franchises, the magazine wondered if fans had a preference as to what they’d most especially love to see rebooted.

The past two days have been incredibly exciting for NASA and its New Horizons spacecraft. The probe made its much-anticipated flyby of the mysterious Solar System object called Ultima Thule early on January 1st, and NASA declared the mission a success after receiving word that the spacecraft gathered a wealth of science data.

Now, as scientists begin studying the very first tidbits of information gathered by New Horizons we’re learning a whole lot more about the rock. In fact, we just found out that Ultima Thule isn’t one rock, but two.

Tesla haters are parking their pickup trucks at Tesla Supercharger stations

Tesla’s emergence as a revolutionary automaker over the past few years hasn’t exactly been a smooth ride. Between Elon Musk’s antics and a long history of production issues — not to mention an equally long history of losing money every quarter — Tesla has nonetheless managed to stay afloat while fundamentally changing the way many people view the driving and car-buying experience.

That notwithstanding, Tesla’s success has given rise to a number of decidedly anti-Tesla groups keen on taking the company down a peg at any given opportunity. From union organizers who sometimes employ somewhat shady tactics to fossil fuel advocates who routinely pump out slanted anti-Tesla stories, it’s no secret that Tesla has its fair share of enemies.

Scientists think they know where the early universe’s dark matter has been hiding

%name Scientists think they know where the early universe’s dark matter has been hiding by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Most of the mass in the universe is made up of a kind of matter that none of us have ever seen. It’s called “dark matter” and, despite being incredibly abundant, it’s also extremely difficult to study. Decades-old calculations suggested that there is more dark matter around younger galaxies than the ancient ones from the early days of the universe, but then where did the dark matter we see today come from? A new study offers the answer.

Past research suggested that galaxies we see nearby have more dark matter than those that are very distant. The farther away a galaxy is the farther back in time we’re effectively looking, and scientists believed that those ancient galaxies didn’t have all that much dark matter around them. As it turns out, that isn’t the case.

Samsung tipped to launch Galaxy Fold foldable smartphone in Europe this year

%name Samsung tipped to launch Galaxy Fold foldable smartphone in Europe this year by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Samsung unveiled its first foldable smartphone back in early November, during its yearly developer conference, but didn’t tell us what it would be called. Samsung left plenty of details out of the event, focusing on the new Infinity Flex screen technology, as well as the One UI user interface that will power the handset. The main specs were also kept secret, and the phone was shown in a protective case that made it look rather bulky.

Samsung also failed to tell us how much it’ll cost or when it’ll launch. But the phone, usually referred to as Galaxy F in rumors and reports, is expected to drop in the first half of 2019. A new report says that Samsung will bring the Galaxy Fold to various European countries, suggesting it will test out the new form factor in several markets this year.
