Tesla releases a video showing us how a Model 3 gets made

The Model 3 has long been the linchpin in Tesla’s plan to bring electric cars to the masses. Hardly a point of speculation, Elon Musk said this himself in Tesla’s now somewhat famous “Master Plan” all the way back in 2006. If you recall, Musk at the time explained that Tesla’s overarching strategy was to take profits from pricier models (i.e the Roadster and the Model S) in order to bankroll an “even more affordable car.”

That affordable car, as we’d find out about 10 years later, was the Model 3. And while the $35,000 option for the Model 3 isn’t available just yet, demand for Tesla’s mass market EV remains incredibly strong. In fact, the Model 3 is largely responsible for Tesla actually managing to turn a quarterly profit earlier this year.

Strapping a high-speed camera to a lawnmower blade is the best idea anyone has ever had

%name Strapping a high speed camera to a lawnmower blade is the best idea anyone has ever had by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

People (including myself) love slow-motion videos and we also tend to love watching things being destroyed. Lawnmowers are really, really good at destroying things, but capturing its destructive power with a high-speed lens isn’t the easiest thing in the world… unless you flip it upside down and strap the camera right to the blade.

Now, I wouldn’t want to be the one to tackle such a project, but the good news is that a YouTuber by the name of Tesla500 has already done all the hard work. The over 20-minute-long video shows the building of the rig itself as well as lots and lots of random household objects meeting their end in super slow motion.

4 new movie trailers you need to watch from this past week

%name 4 new movie trailers you need to watch from this past week by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

I hear you, the trailer you most wanted to see this week still isn’t here, and we have an idea or two as to why Sony and Marvel may be delaying the Spider-Man: Far From Home clips. However, that doesn’t mean we don’t have some Marvel-related content for you, as well as at least one new movie trailer you’ll enjoy, no matter how scary it is.

Meanwhile, Christmas Day brought us a bunch of new movies, including Holmes & Watson, Vice, Destroyer, On the Basis of Sex, and Stan & Ollie. These are all great movies which all happen to be on my list, but I’ll probably catch most of them when the hit streaming sites. Speaking of streaming, Netflix has Bird Box out, but also its first-ever choose-your-own-adventure movie, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.

This little $60 box actually delivered on its promise to help me sleep better

%name This little $60 box actually delivered on its promise to help me sleep better by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

In my quest to regularly get a good night’s sleep, I’ve made a lot of changes. I got a new bed with a new mattress, and I got new pillows that are much more comfortable and more supportive than my old ones. But I think the biggest impact was made by a little white box called the Adaptive Sound Technologies LectroFan Evo Sound Machine. This little machine 10 different fan sounds, 10 different white noise variations, and two different ocean sounds. They’re all non-looping so there are no breaks, and you can leave the sound of your choosing playing all night or you can set a timer. All of the little sounds in and around the house are drowned out, and I’ve been sleeping like a baby as a result. There’s no such thing as a sleep solution that works for everyone, but the LectroFan Evo works like a dream for me.

Adaptive Sound Technologies LectroFan Evo White Noise Sound Machine with 22 Unique Non-Looping…: $59.95

Here are the highlights from the product page:

  • Helps mask disruptive environmental noises so you can fall asleep with ease
  • Safe, solid-state design is powered by AC or USB and dynamically creates unique, non-repeating sounds with no moving parts
  • Precise volume control, an optional timer, and a 3.5mm connector for headphones or a portable speaker to match your environment and sleep style
  • Also ideal for creating a disturbance-free work area, or just reducing the distracting effects of outside noises for a more relaxing environment, day or night

It’s hard to skip class in China, because school uniforms now come with trackers

%name It’s hard to skip class in China, because school uniforms now come with trackers by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Chinese citizens get accustomed pretty early in life to living in a constant state of being tracked and surveilled by authorities. In what sounds a little like an episode of Black Mirror come to life, Chinese schools are now giving students school uniforms that come with two chips in the shoulders that track students’ locations.

It’s meant to keep a handle on when students are coming and going — you know, purely for attendance purposes, of course. As a complement to the chips, the schools also employ facial recognition at the entrances to make sure students are wearing the uniform that belongs to them.

Scientists invent a way to turn copper into a gold analog

%name Scientists invent a way to turn copper into a gold analog by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Gold is one of the most highly sought after materials on the planet, so inventing a way to turn a much more abundant material, like copper, into the precious metal would be a huge accomplishment. Scientists from China haven’t reached that incredible milestone, but they have managed to make copper behave a lot like gold under specific conditions.

In a new research paper, which was published in Science Advances, the team of Chinese researchers explain how they used a blast of charged argon gas against copper atoms that, when cooled, formed tiny grains that behave very similar to gold under extreme stresses.

Mark Zuckerberg looks back at Facebook’s most challenging year to date

%name Mark Zuckerberg looks back at Facebook’s most challenging year to date by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

With 2019 right around the corner, Facebook is presumably thrilled to leave 2018 behind as the company looks to fix a lot of the damage its brand experienced over the last 12 months. From the Cambridge Analytica scandal to any number of privacy missteps, it seems that Facebook remained in the news for all the wrong reasons for the entirety of 2018. Indeed, even today, Facebook was the topic of a New York Times expose detailing the company’s somewhat misguided efforts to moderate hate speech and other types of harmful content.

With that said, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg — who many have been quick to label as tone-deaf — published an overview of the company’s struggles and triumphs over the last 12 months. The overview was naturally published on Zuckerberg’s Facebook account and has been greeted with somewhat mixed reviews.

The future of retail sounds hyper personalized – and slightly dystopian

%name The future of retail sounds hyper personalized – and slightly dystopian by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

In the year 2040, there will still be plenty of physical, brick-and-mortar stores around where you can go to buy things — but they will be so kitted out with technology and dystopian-like features that they’d feel like another world to today’s consumer.

According to a new report forecasting what the future of retail will look like, analysts predict stores to deploy areas like so-called “cold zones,” which mean exactly what the name implies. They’ll be a literally frigid part of the store where you could try on winter coats and similar products to get a sense of how much you’d actually like them day-to-day. Along these same lines, stores may deploy turf where you could try on cleats and see how they feel in actual use.

‘Holmes & Watson’ was so bad that even Netflix didn’t want it

%name ‘Holmes & Watson’ was so bad that even Netflix didn’t want it by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The film Holmes & Watson debuted recently to absolutely devastating reviews. Though the movie boasts a seemingly intriguing cast — with Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly finally joining forces again — the vast majority of reviews so far have been atrocious and unforgiving. The movie has already been categorized as an abject failure just three days after its release. All in all, it’s quite sad that Ferrell and Reilly, who delivered an endless amount of laughs in Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, were part of a movie that by all accounts is a dud for the ages.

On Rotten Tomatoes, for example, the movie has a laughably bad rating of 7%. One representative review from Rolling Stone critic David Fear notes that “it’s so painfully unfunny we’re not sure it can legally be called a comedy.” There have even been reports that the movie has prompted some audience goers to flat-out leave in the middle of the movie. All that aside, here’s how you know the film is truly bad: Netflix didn’t even want it.
