Android TV is on a hot streak – and growing especially quickly outside the US

2018 was certainly a great year for TV. We binged as much of it as ever, services like Netflix kept cranking out new series for us to get addicted to and more people than ever are cutting the cord completely — ditching expensive traditional cable TV packages and going all-in on Internet TV.

Which may explain why Google says its Android TV service is on something of a hot streak at the moment, growing to the point that an executive says the service now has “tens of millions” of users outside the US.

NASA wants you to celebrate New Years with its New Horizons space probe

NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft has been speeding through space since early 2006 and it’s about to make what might be its most interesting flyby to date. After speeding past Jupiter and Pluto in the 12 years since its launch, the probe is about to have a very close encounter with a mysterious object in the outer Solar System called Ultima Thule. As luck would have it, it’s going to meet its target on New Year’s Day, and it’s a pretty big deal for NASA.

As we approach the probe’s arrival at Ultima Thule, NASA is announcing its schedule of events related to the probe’s flyby. The big show will begin on the afternoon of Monday, December 31st, and it’ll kick off three days of news and briefings that will give us our best look yet at an extremely distant Solar System object.

Demand for Tesla’s Model 3 expected to remain strong in 2019

%name Demand for Tesla’s Model 3 expected to remain strong in 2019 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

With all the flack Tesla gets for its inability to consistently meet its stated production goals, it’s easy to overlook the fact that demand for the Model 3 has remained incredibly strong for more than two years now. And with Tesla finally getting a handle on production, Model 3 sales may be primed to explode in 2019.

Looking ahead to the next year, analyst Dan Ives believes that Model 3 demand remains robust and that consumers are growing more interested in the mass market EV as demand for bulkier cars like SUVs slows down. What’s more, Ives’ note relays that Tesla should see a nice boost in sales as the company continues to expand across Europe.

PlayStation Plus free games for January 2019: Steep, Portal Knights, and more

There are few franchises I miss more than the SSX snowboarding games. In fact, the SSX reboot was one of my favorite games of 2012, but I haven’t spent much time on the virtual slopes in the years since. That’s precisely why I was so excited to see that Ubisoft’s Steep would be coming to the PlayStation Plus free games collection next month. It may not be quite the same, but I’m looking forward to racing down snowy mountains again.

Sandbox action RPG Portal Knights is the other headliner this month, though I think I’m even more interested in the Zone of the Enders HD Collection, which you should absolutely try if you’ve never played them before. Amplitude is a pretty great inclusion too, and worth having on your PS3’s hard drive.

Watch a NASA astronaut relearn how to walk after nearly 200 days in space

It’s only been about a week since three of the crew members aboard the International Space Station flew back down to Earth aboard Russia’s Soyuz spacecraft. Their vehicle, which was the same one that sprung a leak on a component that was ultimately jettisoned before reentry, held up just fine and the trio made it back to Earth just fine.

Astronaut Drew Feustel is no strange to space, and while he wasn’t part of the crew that returned to Earth last week he knows all about the struggles facing anyone who endures an extended stay in space. In a tweet welcoming home the crew, Feustel offers us an eye-opening look at what space explorers have to deal with after they come home.

Samsung is going to show off a bunch of weird new stuff at CES 2019

An ASMR microphone, a custom perfume service and an auto-adjusting computer monitor stand that helps users with their posture are among eight projects Samsung announced today that it plans to show off in just a few weeks as part of CES 2019 in Las Vegas.

The projects are all fueled in some way by artificial intelligence and were developed via Samsung’s C-Lab (Creative Lab) program. As part of this announcement, Samsung says these C-Lab projects that will be revealed represent the biggest number of projects the lab has ever unveiled in a single show since making its CES debut in 2016. And doing this, the company says, will help it “refine the projects and prepare the prototypes that will eventually become finished products to take to market.”

More than 3,700 patients who went in for surgery at the HealthPlus Surgery Center in New Jersey may have been exposed to HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C, according to a harrowing report from NBC News.

While no patients at the clinic have reported any worrisome symptoms to date, the New Jersey Department of Health is naturally advising all patients who visited the clinic between January of 2018 and September 7 of 2018 to get tested. As it should, HealthPlus Surgery Center said it will foot the bill for any testing costs.

Jack Black is bringing his zany persona to a YouTube channel focused on gaming

%name Jack Black is bringing his zany persona to a YouTube channel focused on gaming by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

YouTube’s newest gaming personality is funny, eccentric, weird and very famous. We’re talking, of course, about Jack Black, who also very much knows his memes — the banner for the new gaming-focused YouTube channel he’s launched, Jablinksi Games, is ‘Sakurai Kirby,” and the channel will apparently see the first episode from the actor uploaded on Friday.

Jack is working on this with his son, who will apparently handle all the behind-the-camera stuff. The description underneath a short clip Jack posted to the channel by way of introducing it promises “games, food and life,” so make of that what you will. “It’s gonna be bigger than Ninja. It’s gonna be bigger than PewDiePie,” Jack promises in that short clip about his channel, which had already racked up almost 380.000 subscribers at the time of this writing.

Sniffles, the noseless dog, needs a loving home

The holidays are a time of giving, and if you’re looking to give a homeless pet a new life, you probably won’t do much better than Sniffles. Found by Orange County Animal Services, Sniffles is a stray with a rather unique condition: he was born without a nose.

The pup gets along just fine without a sniffer and, while he does have a habit of snorting, it hasn’t affected his pleasant disposition. After going through an exam at a local vet in Florida, Sniffles was given a clean bill of health. Now, he needs a forever home, and the internet is falling all over itself to find him one.

Samsung rumored to bring ‘Sound on Display’ OLED panels to CES 2019

%name Samsung rumored to bring ‘Sound on Display’ OLED panels to CES 2019 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Every smartphone generation has its theoretical apex, and this generation, every phone maker on the planet appears to be gunning for the all-screen design that will win over consumers. The notch of the iPhone X was a step in the right direction, but other brands have pushed the concept further, and while Samsung has yet to make its move, there is a great deal of mounting evidence that future Galaxy phones will lose their bezels altogether.

Citing industry sources, Korean-language news site Electronic Times reported on Wednesday that Samsung plans to show off its “Sound on Display” (SoD) OLED panels at CES 2019 next month. First announced earlier this year, SoD panels eliminate the need for external speakers and allow the display to emit sound.
