Amazon’s huge lead in the smart speaker race is starting to shrink

%name Amazon’s huge lead in the smart speaker race is starting to shrink by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Smart speakers represent one of the next great battlefronts as the biggest tech giants race to capture new territory in the war for user attention — and, of course, advertising real estate. And while Amazon has been the far and away market leader in the category for some time, new research shows its dominance appears to be eroding.

The latest forecast from eMarketer predicts that next year, the user base for Amazon’s line of Echo speakers will for the first time slip to less than two-thirds of all US smart speaker users. Obviously, two thirds of the category is still a strong leadership position, but the trend line here for Amazon is nevertheless going in the wrong direction.

Tesla’s $7,500 federal tax credit is set to expire in less than two weeks

%name Tesla’s $7,500 federal tax credit is set to expire in less than two weeks by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Tesla earlier today published a blog post reminding prospective buyers that the generous $7,500 federal tax credit as it pertains to new Tesla purchases is set to expire in less than two weeks. In other words, if the tax credit plays a role in whether or not you’re ready to pull the trigger on a brand new Tesla, you’ll definitely want to get your order in as soon as possible.

For a few years now, Tesla buyers have enjoyed the aforementioned $7,500 tax credit, but it’s about to be phased out entirely in just a few months. Because Tesla shipped its 200,000th EV this past July, the tax credit will drop down to $3,750 starting in January. Then in July of 2019, the tax credit drops down to $1,875. And starting in 2020, the credit disappears entirely.

New addition to Apple’s executive team shows how serious the company is about AI

%name New addition to Apple’s executive team shows how serious the company is about AI by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The conventional wisdom among the tech cognoscenti has been that Apple lags behind rivals like Google and Amazon when it comes to its efforts in artificial intelligence — that an Apple tool like Siri, for example, is easily outmatched by Amazon and Google’s comparable digital assistants. And that Apple is also self-hobbled, in a way, given that the company has been so resolute in professing to collect as little of its users’ data as possible — data that you kind of have to collect in order to train an AI system to learn how to be useful.

Apple, nevertheless, doesn’t intend to cede ground and or let itself be relegated to second-tier status when it comes to AI and machine learning. For evidence of that, look no farther than a new addition to its executive team that the iPhone maker has just announced.

Study: Amazon, Hulu and Netflix probably have too much overlap to subscribe to all three

%name Study: Amazon, Hulu and Netflix probably have too much overlap to subscribe to all three by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Given how much of a major shift we’ve seen in where the average person gets their TV and movie fix from these days — the slow, steady transition from overpriced cable to convenient, affordable streaming options — it’s only natural that the full scope of those offerings will get closer scrutiny as time goes on.

For example, it can be a bit of a chore sometimes to research which of your favorite programs is streaming where. And to keep up with the license agreements that expire, meaning your show disappears from one service and reappears elsewhere. They all also fight for exclusives, not to mention produce their own original buzzworthy series and movies.

These were the 10 most popular shows of 2018, according to Nielsen ratings

%name These were the 10 most popular shows of 2018, according to Nielsen ratings by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

2018 was an incredible year for television. Whether you’ve cut the cord in favor of streaming services or still tune in to broadcast networks for prime time programming, there were countless worthwhile returning and brand new series on the air this year. But as the TV landscape has become increasingly scattered across networks and services, there seem to be fewer and fewer shows that attract a consistent, massive audience week to week.

But there are still a few monolithic shows (though they don’t draw in nearly as large an audience as they would have a decade or two ago). This week, Nielsen shared its “Tops of 2018” lists, which broke down all of the biggest shows and telecasts of the year. If you’re a fan of TV, the results probably won’t surprise you.

%name Galaxy S10 to ship with pre installed screen protectors, ‘Edge’ name to make a return by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Remember the Galaxy Note Edge and Galaxy S6 Edge that followed it? Those were the first Samsung phones to ship with curved edge displays. The Note had just one edge, while the Galaxy S6 Edge introduced the Galaxy S design we’ve come to know ever since. But next year, Samsung will do things a bit differently.

Instead of just two Galaxy S10 models, both featuring edge screens, Samsung will launch a more affordable Lite phone that will feature a flat display. And a new report says the Edge moniker will make a triumphant return.

Samsung fans probably know by now that their favorite smartphone maker is working on up to four distinct Galaxy S10 models. Three of them, the Lite, S10, and S10+, will be unveiled in February, while a 5G version is expected to drop later next year. UK authorities may give police ‘new powers’ because of morons flying drones near airports

%name UK authorities may give police ‘new powers’ because of morons flying drones near airports by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Barring any last-minute surprise, the second-busiest airport in the UK may finally reopen again before the end of the week after being forced to close since 9 p.m. local time Wednesday because of a pair of drones spotted flying close by.

It might sound minor, but officials quickly scrambled to shut down Gatwick Airport, south of London, after what was determined to be a purposeful attempt at causing disruption to the airport and to the tens of thousands of travelers left stranded there. British authorities have spent the day discussing emergency measures, like new powers that police and the military could be imbued with to stop this kind of panic-by-drone.
