A future Galaxy S10 successor might ship with a holographic display

Almost all smartphone makers out there have “all-screen” phones in stores this year, as we’ve reached a smartphone design peak. We want pocketable devices with displays that extend from corner to corner, and we’re nearly there. It won’t be long until smartphones with a real all-screen design come out, the kind that doesn’t make any compromises. But once the notches, the camera holes, and the slide-out mechanisms are gone, smartphone makers will have fewer ways of increasing the size of the display without also increasing the size of the device. Foldable displays will offer users a tablet-sized smartphone that can still be placed in a pocket. A more exciting way of improving the display experience is projecting holograms out of the display. And Samsung is interested in both of these technologies.

In just a matter of weeks, we saw a few Android flagship smartphones come out sporting 10GB of RAM, which seems like overkill for mobile devices. Chinese smartphone makers Xiaomi and OnePlus have such devices, including the Xiaomi Black Shark and Mi Mix 3, and the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition. But forget all about that for a second, as the first smartphone with 12GB of RAM was just unveiled. Spoiler alert, it also comes from China, and you can’t get it right now.

An intelligent parrot used Alexa to play music and order food from Amazon

An African grey parrot has made headlines recently for inadvertently making orders via his owner’s Amazon Echo. Originally reported via The Times of London, the parrot — whose name is Rocco — would mindlessly activate Alexa and have the virtual assistant tell jokes and play music. Rocco even tried to order a few items from Amazon, but the owner wisely had set up controls to prevent unauthorized purchases.

What makes the somewhat lighthearted story even more amusing is that Rocco previously had a stint living at the UK’s National Animal Welfare Trust (NAWT) but was kicked out — yes, kicked out — because he was swearing too much. As the old adage says, truth is stranger than fiction. Rocco was subsequently placed under the care of a NAWT employee named Marion Wischnewski whereupon he quickly started activating Alexa.

NASA says Saturn’s rings are disappearing right before our eyes

%name NASA says Saturn’s rings are disappearing right before our eyes by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Of all the planets in our Solar System, you’d have to agree that Saturn is the most immediately recognizable. With its iconic rings, you can pick Saturn out in an instant, but if NASA scientists are right, we might actually be watching the planet’s most eye-catching feature disappearing right in front of us.

In a new video, NASA Goddard explains that while we’ve always seen Saturn with its bold rings, the rings themselves are actually fairly young. Estimated to be less than 100 million years old, they’re a “new” feature of the planet, and they won’t be sticking around for long.

Apple has considered using both Touch ID and Face ID on the iPhone

%name Apple has considered using both Touch ID and Face ID on the iPhone by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

If I were to choose between Touch ID and Face ID, I’d go for Apple’s 3D facial recognition system without thinking twice. It turns out that I don’t miss Touch ID at all, and that was one of my initial worries last year when Apple revealed that the iPhone X would not have fingerprint-sensing capabilities.

I’ve been using Face ID for more than a year now, with hardly any problems, and I’m still rocking an iPhone X. But it turns out that Apple hasn’t entirely given up the idea of combining Touch ID and Face ID on the iPhone.

NASA’s Juno spacecraft is now halfway through its lengthy stay in Jupiter orbit

NASA’s Juno spacecraft has delivered the best glimpses of Jupiter ever, and it’s just getting started. In a new blog post, NASA celebrates the halfway point in Juno’s long mission by offering a brief recap of some of the more interesting discoveries the craft has made over the years while offering a glimpse at what the future might hold.

The orbiter, which was launched way back in mid 2011, has now completed 16 flybys of Jupiter, gradually mapping the planet and providing a number of insights into how the planet works. Juno has helped scientists understand more about Jupiter’s thick atmosphere and how deep its massive storms stretch into the planet, but there’s still plenty more to learn.

Apple recently hired former Tesla designer Andrew Kim, thus reigniting speculation that Apple has some interesting plans ahead in the automotive space. Originally spotted by The Verge, Kim’s LinkedIn profile reveals that he began working at Apple just this month. Previously, Kim spent a tad under two years at Tesla where he worked on every car under the Tesla umbrella, including the Model 3, the Tesla Semi, and the next-gen Roadster.

MIT invented a way to build nano-scale versions of larger objects

%name MIT invented a way to build nano scale versions of larger objects by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

In science fiction, “shrink rays” are the easiest way to turn a large object into something much, much smaller, but here in reality things aren’t that simple. Creating so-called “nano-scale” versions of objects is a difficult task that researchers at MIT aimed to make a bit easier, and the result is a new system that allows scientists to effectively shrink three-dimensional structures to one thousandth their original size.

In creating this new system, MIT professor Edward Boyden and his students started with a technique that is actually used to make things bigger. It’s called expansion microscopy, and it’s used to increase the size of cells and tissues by embedding the biological material with a polymer gel that causes it to grow in size.

Water-resistant iPhone saves lives when group is forced to abandon capsized boat

You’ll never realize how important it is to have a water-resistant smartphone on you until you have to use one to call for help while you’re treading water. That’s what happened to a group of friends visiting Japan recently after their boat capsized in rough seas. A water-resistant iPhone allowed them to call the local emergency number and have the coast guard save them.

The list of the highest grossing iOS apps in 2018 might surprise you

%name The list of the highest grossing iOS apps in 2018 might surprise you by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

If you had to guess 5 out of 10 of the highest grossing iOS apps on the App Store in 2018, there’s a good chance you would fail miserably. While-widely known apps like Candy Crush certainly rake in money hand over fist, the most lucrative iOS apps aren’t necessarily well-known outside of certain countries.

To this point, a new research report from Sensor Tower (via Business Insider) reveals which iOS apps in 2018 managed to generate the most in revenue. Standing atop of the list is Netflix, an app which Sensor Tower claims to have generated $790.2 million in revenue over the past 12 months on the App Store alone. Netflix rival Hulu, meanwhile, occupies the 10th spot after generating $132.6 million in revenue in 2018.
