Bitcoin scammers are now using bomb threats as a scare tactic across the US

%name Bitcoin scammers are now using bomb threats as a scare tactic across the US by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Over the past year or so, the type of crime associated with Bitcoin scammers has evolved in an unpredictable and somewhat frightening manner. While we’re used to seeing stories involving hackers freezing the computers of unsuspecting users and demanding payment in Bitcoin in order to unlock it, a new group of scammers have started threatening deadly violence on their targets.

As noted by The Verge, a number of police departments are alerting the public to a particularly treacherous scam that has targeted users all across the US. Here’s how it all works: a scam artist will fire off an email to someone in a particular building and relay that someone with a bomb is on the premises. The recipient is then instructed to make a large Bitcoin payment — sometimes to the tune of $20,000 — in order to prevent the detonation of the explosive device.

Study: US consumers pay more for wireless data than just about anywhere else

%name Study: US consumers pay more for wireless data than just about anywhere else by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

US consumers who feel a sense of foreboding that ultimately turns to sticker shock whenever they get their cellphone bill for the month have good reason to feel that way, it seems. According to a new report by Finnish research firm Rewheel, if you live in the US you generally pay more for wireless data than consumers do in most other developed countries.

Mara Faccio, a professor of finance at Purdue University’s Krannert School of Management, agrees with that finding. She likewise has produced a research paper analyzing mobile phone plans and telecom laws in almost 150 countries, and among her discoveries was that the monthly prices in the US are almost three times what German consumers pay and twice as much as monthly plan prices in Denmark.

Google’s Chromecast is finally being sold on Amazon again

%name Google’s Chromecast is finally being sold on Amazon again by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

It’s finally possible to buy a new Chromecast on Amazon, including the third-generation model that Google released earlier this year. The Amazon vs. Google spat is a well-known one, especially over devices that can stream media. Amazon has its own Fire TV products, including a stick similar to the Chromecast, and both companies offer subscriptions to their own streaming services: Amazon Prime and YouTube TV.

Amazon first pulled Google’s Chromecast because it didn’t support Prime Video. Google, meanwhile, removed the YouTube app from Amazon devices as a response. But the war appears to be fizzling out.

Netflix is testing an instant replay feature that sounds wildly unnecessary

%name Netflix is testing an instant replay feature that sounds wildly unnecessary by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

There are some scenes in movies, be they huge action set pieces or brilliantly-delivered monologues, that deserve a second look. Maybe we didn’t catch everything the first time around, or maybe they’re just so good that we don’t get tired of watching them over and over again. Either way, Netflix appears to be aware of this phenomenon, as it has begun testing a new feature that allows viewers to rewatch a scene with the press of a button.

This might sound harmless enough, but as the users who have been subjected to the test will attest, it seems to be a much better idea in theory than it is in practice. Only a small selection of the streaming service’s library supports this feature, but it apparently takes the form of a distracting pop-up that takes over part of the screen.

The 20 most anticipated video games of 2019

%name The 20 most anticipated video games of 2019 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

We’re now deep enough into the current generation of gaming consoles that massive, game-changing entertainment experiences have become the norm, and any month without one is a major disappointment. This year alone we got a new Red Dead, a new Smash Bros., a new God of War, and a new Spider-Man — all of which are arguably the best of their respective franchises, along with being some of the best games of the generation.

As we seem to reaching the inevitable transition to the next phase of consoles in the next couple of years, 2019 could be the last year we see developers fully focused on the PS4 and Xbox One (not so much the relatively recent Switch). With that in mind, here’s a list of 20 games we’re most looking forward to next year.
