Bloomberg: The first 5G iPhone will launch in 2020 at the earliest

At least two smartphone makers have launched 5G phones this year, but the handsets aren’t exactly 5G-ready. Motorola was the first one, but its phone needs a 5G module that’s not available in stores — not that 5G networks are really available to potential customers right now. Xiaomi then said it’ll have a 5G version of its latest flagship in stores and teased the handset in previous weeks, but you can’t buy that phone. OnePlus, Samsung, and Huawei all confirmed they’re working on 5G handsets of their own, while Sprint partnered with LG and HTC for a 5G smartphone and 5G hotspot, respectively. Apple, however, isn’t expected to make a 5G iPhone until 2020. And that’s the best estimate, a new report says.

Infinity-O displays are the talk of the town right now, and that’s because so many reports keep saying this is the kind of screen that will end up on the upcoming Galaxy S10 flagship. Samsung already unveiled this particular type of Infinity screen along five other versions at its SDC18, and that was just days after it teased the design with the help of an unannounced Galaxy A8s. On top of that, Chinese smartphone makers including Huawei and Lenovo are also expected to deliver smartphones with similar displays, although they’ll have different marketing names to describe all-screen displays featuring a circular camera cutout at the top instead of a thick bezel. It’s about to be the biggest trend in smartphones, and the Galaxy S10 will be one of the phones that starts it all.

Governments and entities around the world are starting to venture deep into Minority Report-land, giving serious attention to the use of artificial intelligence and scoring databases to assign risk in a way that influences the lives of ordinary people in profound, game-changing, and even slightly creepy ways.

We reported just last week about how the government in China is rolling out a “social credit” scoring system that central authorities are using to keep closer watch on the country’s 1.3 billion citizens and to limit the activities — like booking flights — of people deemed to be “untrustworthy” and assigned low scores as part of this system.

%name Top Apple insider says AirPods 2 will hit stores early next year by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Though Apple’s AirPods were initially mocked due to a somewhat funky design, demand for the company’s wireless earbuds has continued to grow impressively with each passing month. And while Apple won’t divulge specific sales figures, reputed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that Apple may sell upwards of 28 million units by the time 2018 draws to a close.

Originally released in late 2016, Apple’s AirPods are nearly two years old at this point. Consequently, we’ve seen quite a few rumors surrounding a next-gen version of the wireless earbuds over the past few months. Though early rumors claimed that we’d see AirPods 2 hit store shelves sometime this year, a new investor note from Kuo relays that Apple will release a new iteration of AirPods sometime in early 2019.

Big Brother is watching you, and so it seems are many customer service agents you chat with online. Apparently, they can see what you type in real time — everything you type, every time you erase and start over, all with most people generally unaware of the degree to which they’re being scrutinized.

Yes, those online agents are increasingly able to follow along with what you type before you ever click “send” — a button that Gizmodo’s ace privacy reporter Kashmir Hill went so far as to describe in a piece this week as just “an illusion.” What brought this up? Well, a number of things, actually.

Now that Thanksgiving is over, and we have a temporary reprieve before we are once again surrounded by family for the holidays, we might as well cram in as much streaming as possible. Thankfully, Netflix is going to make that easy with over twenty new shows and movies for the first full week of December.

Some of the highlights are the first season of Blue Planet II, the first season of Syfy’s Happy!, and the brilliant alien movie District 9. There are a boatload of original series and films coming this week as well, but most of them appear to be relatively unfamiliar, other than Neo Tokio and The Ranch. But don’t fret — there are plenty of Christmas films coming, in case you’re looking to get into the spirit a few weeks early this year.

Interview: Facebook Messenger boss says 1-to-1 communication trumps every other form

%name Interview: Facebook Messenger boss says 1 to 1 communication trumps every other form by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

On a call with analysts in October, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg laid out the future of his giant social networking empire, pointing to its efforts around video, messaging and the ephemeral “Story” format within messaging as the keys to the company’s future. Indeed, Facebook has been significantly ramping up its investments in those areas, having spun off Messenger and rolled out a more stripped-down version of the app.

“Stories” within Instagram, Facebook and Messenger offer yet another revenue-driver for the company now that ads are slowly being inserted between those stories. And the company is commissioning premium video content to build up its nascent Facebook Watch YouTube rival. Facebook’s vice president in charge of its standalone Messenger app, meanwhile, is pretty straightforward when you talk to him about communication between people these days, how people are changing up their social media usage and why Messenger arguably points the way forward for the beleaguered, sprawling social giant.

200 ‘Shrek’ fans created a spectacular shot-for-shot remake of the original film

%name 200 ‘Shrek’ fans created a spectacular shot for shot remake of the original film by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

As far as movies go, some engender more passion from fans than others, with the Star Wars franchise obviously being one such example. A more recent film franchise that has seemingly created something of a rabid fan base of its own, interestingly enough, is Shrek. In one respect, this shouldn’t be too much of a surprise given that the Shrek films appeal to a wide spectrum of ages. Indeed, the original is something that can be enjoyed equally by adults and kids alike.

In light of the aforementioned Shrek fandom, a group of 200 or so hardcore fans recently banded together to create one of the most bizarre videos you’ve seen in quite some time. Dubbed Shrek Retold, the film is a surreal shot-for-shot remake of the original 2001 film. What makes the film so outlandish is that it’s comprised in a multitude of artistic styles. Specifically, some of the scenes are live action recreations — with actors wearing laughably bad makeup — while other scenes are nothing more than crude animations.
