Tabloids have always taken great liberty with headlines but some of the current coverage of the asteroid known as 2018 LF16 is really taking things to the next level. The near-Earth rock has been the subject of numerous headlines touting NASA’s assessment that there are 62 potential “risk trajectories” that could put it on a collision course with Earth sometime between 2023 and 2117. However, looking at the hard data paints a much less worrisome picture.

The asteroid is quite large, with an estimated diameter of over 200 meters, and if it did indeed strike our planet it would be a bad day for the planet. The good news is that there’s virtually no chance that such a thing is actually going to happen.

The world’s first genetically modified babies were recently born in China… or maybe they weren’t. That’s the story coming out of the country today as researcher He Jiankui is boldly claiming to have performed genetic modification on several embryos from multiple couples, one of which has already resulted in a pregnancy.

According to an Associated Press report, He alleges that he tweaked the genetic code of the embryos in order to make them resistant to future infections of HIV. However, while it would be a remarkable achievement, there’s no way of knowing whether or not He’s claims hold water.

NASA’s InSight lander has spent the bulk of 2018 flying through space towards its target, Mars. Today it finally arrived, passing through the planet’s atmosphere, deploying its parachute, and then touching down on the Red Planet. NASA live streamed video of its Jet Propulsion Laboratory mission control room which was filled with very happy scientists and engineers in the wake of InSight’s arrival.

In an age where we have rovers driving around on Mars this might not sound like a big deal, but nothing could be farther from the truth. The amount of work that goes into a mission like this is virtually invisible from the outside. InSight’s team, however, would be quick to tell you that the work began nearly a decade ago.
