As advances continue in the realm of mobile devices and wearable gadgets, we always come back to the same handful of barriers that impede progress. Chief among them, of course, is battery technology. Component makers spend millions on research and development in an effort to make the most power-efficient parts possible, but the majority of smartphones still only last a day at most per charge. Where wearables are concerned, these tiny devices come in a wide range of flexible shapes that often severely limit vendors’ options when it comes to battery size and placement.
Battery technology has never been able to keep pace with other components, but a new breakthrough unveiled this week by Samsung could represent one of the most important advancements in mobile battery tech we’ve seen in quite some time.

Hoverboards, which self-balancing Segway-like scooters that don’t levitate are known as, are one of the hottest new products of the year. Going for as low as around $270 and all the way up to $2,000, hoverboards might be a hot Christmas gift for many people, assuming they’ll be able to find one in stores.
Walmart, Best Buy, Target, RadioShack and others aren’t likely to sell the popular devices just yet, so don’t expect any hot Black Friday deals on hoverboards from them just yet.

After more and more reports revealed that the Facebook mobile app is consuming plenty of iPhone battery via background activities even when said activities should be off, the company said it will look into matters and issue fixes. Lo and behold, Facebook did release an app update to fix the issues – not a surprising feat per se, considering that Facebook always releases timely updates for its mobile apps – but also addressed the matter in a public post.
As Facebook’s Ari Grant explains, the battery issue is caused by bugs, two of them, which the company is trying to fix. And from the looks of it, they’re not intentional code manipulations that would let Facebook conduct background app activity at all times – at least that’s what Grant says.
