FEATURED — I wish the iPhone had copied HTC instead

%name FEATURED I wish the iPhone had copied HTC instead by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

There are so many things that HTC used to be so good at, but several of the company’s strengths have become weaknesses in recent years. I’m not just talking about selling phones, though that task has indeed become increasingly difficult for HTC as Apple and Samsung apply global pressure at the top and no-name Chinese vendors eat up the bottom and middle of the Eastern market. I’m talking about hardware and software design, which could once both be counted among HTC’s strong suits.

The HTC One M7 and M8 were fantastic phones, and reaching back even further, HTC’s Windows Mobile phones and its early Android phones were often ahead of their time and a cut above rival handsets. With the One M9, HTC had a lapse in judgement at the worst possible time, and while the new HTC One A9 does sport a terrific design it isn’t HTC’s design, it’s Apple’s.

Since I first saw the phone in a series of leaks, I found myself reminiscing about HTC phones of old and it got me thinking: HTC just copied the iPhone 6/6s, but there are a few things about HTC’s handsets that I really wish Apple would copy on the iPhone.

What’s the best smartphone camera in the world? There’s no certain answer, of course, but in general the top contenders every year seem to be phones made by Apple and Samsung, with manufacturers such as LG and even Sony often in the mix. Android Authority recently conducted a blind camera shootout that asked its readers to pick the best photos that were snapped with four different phones: The iPhone 6s, the Galaxy Note 5, the LG G4 and the Sony Xperia Z5. In the end, Android Authority’s readers decided to go with… the iPhone 6s.

There was a huge amount of hype surrounding Windows 10 ahead of its release earlier this year, but another Microsoft product may have been even more worthy of our attention. The company’s HoloLens gave us a glimpse of what computing in the near future may be like, and it was awesome. But Microsoft is hardly the first company to dive into augmented reality. Long before Microsoft ever showed off its HoloLens product, a somewhat low-profile company called Magic Leap was busy behind the scenes cooking up an exciting augmented reality experience that we just got a taste of late last night.

Smartphone manufacturers often praise the strength of their newest models. But, as it turns out, even the strongest phone screen is doomed if it falls on its face.

The hottest new phones faced off recently thanks to SquareTrade, a service that offers insurance for devices and appliances. SquareTrade treated the Apple iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus and Samsung Galaxy Note5 to a strength test using an obstacle course of drops, dunks, bends and extreme temperatures.

The first eight seasons of The Simpsons represent an absolute tour de force of quick-witted comedy. All the more impressive is that the show’s earlier seasons still hold up today, a remarkable feat which speaks to the sheer level of talent involved in putting those first few magical seasons of the show together.

In a somewhat bizarre tale, a Reddit user by the name doobieschnauzer decided to see what it’d be like to watch episode after episode while high on LSD. So off he went on a ridiculous binge where, for two days straight, he consumed LSD and watched innumerable episodes of The Simpsons back to back to back.

Windows 10 thus far has been a huge success, with Microsoft’s newest OS having recently passed over 110 million installs. All in all, that’s a pretty impressive start given that the highly anticipated Windows update was released just about 11 weeks ago.

But Microsoft doesn’t want to stop stop at desktop OS dominance and call it a day. On the contrary It wants to take back some of the valuable browser marketshare it lost rather quickly to Google Chrome. That being the case, leaked screenshots from an upcoming build of Windows 10 show how Microsoft plans to dissuade users from changing the default web browser on their system from Microsoft Edge to something else.
