Google now tells you how coronavirus will affect your travel plans

  • Google has updated its site and its apps to help travelers make informed decisions about their upcoming trips in light of the coronavirus pandemic.
  • Countless people have had to cancel their travel plans due to the novel coronavirus, but with Google’s latest changes, it should be easier to make the necessary changes.
  • Many airlines have made significant adjustments to their cancellation policies and change fees due to the coronavirus, and Google has put up a new Help Center page that will link you directly to the policy pages of dozens of airlines.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

There are clearly more pressing concerns at the moment than canceling or rescheduling travel plans that were made prior to the World Health Organization declaring the novel coronavirus outbreak a pandemic, but that does not change the fact that countless individuals (myself included) need to change their plans in the coming days. Furthermore, there are still people who need to travel as well, even in the midst of a deadly, worldwide pandemic.

On Tuesday, Google announced a series of changes to help alleviate some of the stress that will inevitably come with attempting to make or change travel plans through its site. Going forward, if you search for information about a flight, a hotel, or things to do at various destinations on Google, you will see COVID-19 travel advisories or restrictions for those locations, along with links to relevant details from your country’s travel authority.

iPhone 12 release may be delayed months because of the coronavirus

%name iPhone 12 release may be delayed months because of the coronavirus by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Apple’s iPhone 12 release may be delayed because of the coronavirus.
  • The iPhone 12 release was planned for September, but Apple is worried that the economic impact of the coronavirus will significantly diminish initial sales.
  • The iPhone 12 release schedule will reportedly be finalized by May.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

With the coronavirus pandemic still spreading, there’s now a possibility that Apple’s iPhone 12 release may be pushed back by a few months, according to a new report from Nikkei. While we’ve seen previous reports claiming that the iPhone 12 — which will be the first iPhone to support 5G connectivity — might be pushed back to November, the new report suggests that the iPhone 12 release might be pushed back even further.

Apple executives are reportedly worried that demand for the next-gen device will be unusually low on account of the coronavirus’ ongoing impact on economies across the globe. Even if Apple can get iPhone production up to speed and on store shelves by September of this year, the simple reality is that consumers today have far less disposable income than they did a month ago. In turn, Apple reportedly wants to avoid a situation where the collective eyes of the world effectively ignore the iPhone 12 release on account of more pressing matters.

Facebook usage skyrockets as the coronavirus forces millions to stay home

  • Facebook usage has soared during the coronavirus pandemic as millions have been forced to stay at home.
  • Chats via Facebook Messenger have increased by 50%.
  • Facebook isn’t making extra money from this increased engagement.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The Cambridge Analytica scandal proved that Facebook wields enormous power when it comes to the news people consume. Whereas people used to consume their daily dose of news by reading the paper or hopping on over to websites like CNN, many people today simply rely upon the news that pops up on their Facebook feed.

In the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook started implementing measures to ensure that fake news and disinformation can’t spread far and wide. And with the coronavirus still in full swing and leaving millions of people stuck at home on quarantine, it seems as if Facebook’s efforts are paying dividends.

New PS5 feature could make playing games ‘as easy as Netflix’

%name New PS5 feature could make playing games ‘as easy as Netflix’ by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Following the PS5 deep dive last week, Sony hasn’t released any new information about the console.
  • A new patent from Sony Interactive Entertainment hints at a PS5 feature that will let players load directly into multiplayer matches and single-player levels from the home screen.
  • Sony reportedly wants playing games on PS5 to be “as easy as Netflix.”
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Last week’s PlayStation 5 system architecture deep dive was disappointing for a number of reasons, but chief among them was the fact that we didn’t actually get to see the next-gen console in action. Obviously, technical specifications and hardware innovations are important, but until we can actually see what the PS5 looks like when it is powered on and running games in real-time, none of the teraflops or gigahertz mean much to the average gamer.

Unfortunately, Sony has yet to offer up even a timetable for the rollout of information about the console, and so, in the meantime, we’re reduced to talking about leaks, rumors, and patents instead. The good news is that the latest patent to be discovered hints at an exciting upgrade to the user interface of the PS5 that will make it easier to jump straight from the main menu directly into a multiplayer match or a specific level of a game.

New rapid coronavirus test kit would give an instant diagnosis at home

%name New rapid coronavirus test kit would give an instant diagnosis at home by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Researchers from the UK have developed a smartphone-connected coronavirus testing device that can be used at home for a fast diagnosis.
  • The COVID-19 test kit would not have to be delivered to a laboratory and could help medical professionals expand the scope of coronavirus screening.
  • The device would only cost around $120 and could process up to six swabs at the same time.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Extensive testing for the novel coronavirus is what helped South Korea reduce the number of new cases, or flatten the curve, even though a few weeks ago it looked like the country would be the world’s next major COVID-19 hot zone after China. The opposite happened in almost every other country that registered a massive spike in cases in the past few days. Governments were caught off-guard by the coronavirus outbreak even though China gave the world almost two months to get ready. Extensive testing campaigns would give each country the real picture of the local coronavirus epidemic. It would also help different regions come up with measures to limit the spread of the disease and provide care before symptoms worsen.

Testing isn’t available to all patients in most countries, and that’s because there aren’t enough kits. Also, some tests take too much time to process, so there’s definitely a need for better, faster methods. In the past few weeks alone, we’ve seen research describing tests that can yield results in anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes. But speed isn’t everything. The tests have to be available to as many people as possible, and that’s where a smart testing device from the UK might help. Scientists have developed a smart, rapid test that can be used by anyone from the comfort of his or her own home.

What to do if someone in your home has coronavirus

%name What to do if someone in your home has coronavirus by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Caring for a coronavirus patient in your own home means adapting to a fast-changing situation.
  • Setting up a sick room, isolating the virus, and ensuring the comfort of your loved one is of utmost importance.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Health experts across the globe are recommending social distancing and self-isolation as the best ways to prevent the spread of coronavirus through a community. The measures work if enough people follow them, but there’s still a big question for people who find themselves in the unenviable position of living in the same home as someone who is confirmed to have COVID-19.

Your best bet in this case — whether you’re the person with the infection or living with someone who you believe may have it or has tested positive for it — is to follow a few basic practices to minimize the risk of the infected person spreading the virus to the rest of the household.

Galaxy Fold 2 fixes the problems of the original Fold in new renders

%name Galaxy Fold 2 fixes the problems of the original Fold in new renders by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Galaxy Fold 2 leaks have been circulating for months, and these new renders give us an idea of how Samsung might be changing the design for 2020.
  • The original Galaxy Fold was an exciting proof-of-concept, but not a great smartphone.
  • With the Galaxy Fold 2, Samsung might be looking to release a phone that is both forward-looking and usable as a daily driver the way the Galaxy S20 is.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

When the Galaxy Fold was unveiled last February, it captured the imagination of countless consumers all around the world who were excited to see the next evolution of the handheld device. The design wasn’t perfect, but it was poised to be the first mass-market phone with a foldable display in history. Samsung was given some slack, but when critics finally got their hands on the foldable, reports of hardware issues sprung up almost immediately, and Samsung was forced to indefinitely delay the phone, which was originally set to launch on April 26th.

When the Galaxy Fold finally did launch on September 6th in South Korea, the reaction was fairly muted. There was no question that Samsung had achieved something impressive, but the odd design and the bulk of the phone made it a non-starter for the average consumer. Now the question is whether or not Samsung can learn from its mistakes and release a Galaxy Fold 2 that people might actually want to use as their daily driver.

Don’t expect your coronavirus stimulus check from the Trump administration until May

%name Don’t expect your coronavirus stimulus check from the Trump administration until May by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The US Senate has now put the finishing touches on a $2 trillion coronavirus-related stimulus plan that includes the Trump administration sending out recovery rebates to affected Americans in the form of $1,200 and $2,400 checks.
  • The checks are a result of the novel coronavirus impact on the economy, which has been profound and left millions of Americans with no income right now as a result of business closures or their hours being dramatically cut back.
  • The checks are expected to go out in May.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

As expected, federal lawmakers have now finished hashing out the details of a massive, $2 trillion stimulus deal meant to provide a salve for some of the disastrous economic consequences of the novel coronavirus outbreak in the US. Among the most important components of the plan are the direct checks providing emergency cash from the Trump administration that will be sent out to Americans, to quickly put money back in the pockets of people who’ve been laid off or seen their hours cut as a result of us all being forced to hunker down at home because of the spread of the virus.

Per the terms of the stimulus plan, single Americans would get $1,200 while married couples get $2,400, with parents also getting an additional $500 for each of their children under the age of 18. And while that might sound like welcome news to Americans left fraught with anxiety about the future because of the damage this virus has caused, don’t celebrate just yet — it’s likely those checks won’t start going out until May, based on past precedence.

It’s not just you, Netflix is suffering a major outage right now across the US

%name It’s not just you, Netflix is suffering a major outage right now across the US by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Millions of Americans are quarantined at home right now as a result of the novel coronavirus outbreak that’s disrupted so much of daily life in the US.
  • Traffic to services like Netflix has surged during this period — but, unfortunately, Netflix seems to have suffered a major disruption that started around mid-day or so on Wednesday.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Netflix is apparently suffering a major outage right now, according to reports on social media as well as third-party services like DownDetector.com.

With the novel coronavirus outbreak still spreading across the US and leaving millions of Americans stuck at home, the streamer is one of the main ways people are entertaining themselves right now. Netflix usage has been way up during the coronavirus-related quarantines, so, of course, this is the worst time for the service to experience a disruption like this.
